..coming into view. I could not find this so smash me if it is out there. Favorite - Luciano Emilio -DCU In the Building (No Order) - Juan Carlos Toja -FCD - Taylor Twellman -Revs (NE) - Eddie Johnson -KC Wizards - Juan Pablo Ángel -Red Bulls (NY) - Guillermo Barros Schelotto -Crew (Columbus) Lurking in the Bushes - Maykel Galindo -Chivas (LA) Who am I missing? Can some non-attackers get some love?
I don't think Emilio is necessarily the favorite. While he may be leading scorer, strikers like Angel and Johnson have impressed me more this year. Toja was fantastic untill he went out of action following the allstar game.
I had to put someone as a fav. Toja should be back soon I think. Some others who may not be MVPs but have had good seasons -C. Mathis -C. Jones -B. Olsen -J Burciaga Jr
Lucky Lucy gets it if DC win the MLS Cup, Blanco if Chicago win, JPA if Metro win. If another team wins, probably JPA.
If Luciano gets the Golden Boot by more than 2 goals, he should also win the MVP award. At times this season he was our only attacking threat. If we had Esky instead of Emilio we'd be in much worse shape.
MVP is given out before MLS Cup takes place, but if DC wins the Shield, I think that gets it for Emilio. Especially if he breaks 20 along the way. No way they could win it this year without him.
For those discussing MLS Cup, remember that the MVP award is chosen at the end of the regular season. Playoff performances do not factor in (although that's usually when you separate the wheat from the chaff as it were). If Chicago makes the playoffs, Blanco wins, hands down. If not, my vote is for Angel. Emilio though has been very good, but D.C. have gotten goals from other sources as well (Fred, Ben Olsen [!], etc.). Injury has hampered Toja but it'll be instructive to see how the team plays when he returns. They've been pretty dismal since he's been out.
The only way Blanco gets the MVP award is if he leads Chicago to the SS. Seeing as how that's virtually impossible, I'll go ahead and say it goes to someone who actually played the majority of the season with their team. My personal candidates: Toja Emilio Scheletto JPA Galindo Every name has made a major impact on their team, and the winner should be whoever leads their team to the best record.
Yeah, pretty soon. (He played in the USOC win over Seattle on Wed., and the win over Toronto on Sat.)
Yeah, no freaking way Blanco gets it. If he scored a goal a game and the Fire won out... still probably not. I think Angel, Toja, and Emilio are the front runners.
There is no question that Emilio SHOULD be the favorite at this stage. He is the most indispensable player on the team with the best record in the league .......... and oh by the way, he also leads the LEAGUE in scoring by 4 goals. But of course, the league will find a way to screw this up, because they already have egg on their face for not even appointing Emilio to the SECOND squad (non-playing) All Star team, while guys like Claudio Reyna (who is THE biggest bust of the 2007 season was able to make the team. So now the league, rather than take more egg on the face by naming an MVP who they totally screwed by leaving off the allstar team, will probably name Angel the MVP instead of admit their gigantic mistake. Think about it ...... if anyone had told any one of you that Jaime Moreno after 22 games (prior to the game on Sunday), wouldn't have a SINGLE goal in the run of play, where would you have said that United would be in the standings?
I'd say this is the correct list except for Schelotto. He's awesome, but it looks like the Crew might not even make the playoffs. Maybe if the Crew go on a 3 or 4 game winning streak, and Schelotto gets a goal and an assist in each game, but even if that happens, I still think Emilio has to get the nod ahead of him. Right now, I'd say Emilio is number one followed by Toja. Third place tie between JPA and Galindo. Of course, the season isn't over yet, so maybe Schelotto or Eddie Johnson can sneak in there with some top games.
I wouldn't have been that surprised. I think it's pretty clear he's not the player he was. I'd probably say they'd be in 3rd, maybe second. I agree that Emilio should be the favorite as of now.
Emilio is the headline grabber and will probably get the award. Blanco has the benefit of knowing what the team was like without him. If he lifts the Fire up into the playoffs, he'd deserve some consideration, but might lose out just because he's not been there long enough. If you go by the before/after calculation, you'd also have to put Juan Pablo Angel up near the top. MLS just announced they've added a "Best Newcomer" award for non-rookies in their first MLS season. The MVP and the Best Newcomer appear likely to be the same person.
What, Don Garber is going to rig the voting? What kind of Area 51 paranoid crap is this? Between all the people factoring in who wins the Cup in the award, and onefine(?)esq's "contribution," this thread should be aborted. Wait. At this point, Emilio is the clear front runner. Let's see how the rest of the season develops. OK, now it can be aborted.
Umm nah, that's not how you should decide MVP for what should be a pretty obvious reasons. Emilio is a scoring machine. I think he has to be the front runner. Scheletto might be a close second. After Emilio, the choices become more dabatable though. JPA has been HUGE for NY too.
? I didn't say that Garber was going to rig it. I'm saying that the powers that be in the league are not going to vote for Emilio because it's a tacit admission of their mistake in the first place at leaving Emilio totally off the all star team. but I think you already knew what i meant and were just being your normal super(?) dave self.
You're still not making sense. Who do you think selects the league MVP? Maybe your answer to that question will clarify this for everyone, me included.
I don't think it's much of an admission of being wrong if Emilio is MVP. Fact is, he was not having an all-star caliber year in the first couple months of the season. He started lighting it up once the all-star balloting ended.
As an aside I think MLS should have a young player of the year award. Something like 21 or 23. Just because it looks good on the old resume.
