Our next game is versus Fiji on Sept 16th! Canada has a very realistic chance of winning that game.

Cheers!

I don't think Canada is dead yet, Wales can be beaten by another team, they did not look all that great and I would assume they had to dig deep to win this game. It might have taken a lot out of them considering it is their first game. The same could be said about Canada too though.

However, this game should cement Wales advance to the quarter finals.

But I must give props to Canada for a well fought battle.
I don't think anybody would have put them ahead of Wales after the half.

In the post-game on Setanta they are mentioning that Canada's fitness levels let them down, and one of the analysts is mentioning that a lack of a domestic league is one of the things that is holding Canada back from stepping up on the world stage.

In the pre-game show they were talking how rugby-mad we are as a nation at an amateur level, and also mentioned at that point that the lack of a domestic league holds us back as a nation.

Does anyone know if Argentina has a domestic rugby league, or do the Pumas just play a lot of friendlies?

Cheers!

Well, barring a miracle, Wales will lose to Australia (everyone in this group should lose heavily to Australia I think). And the other two nations in our group are rated worse than Canada. So, Wales should beat them. I would love to see one of them upset Wales, but it is unlikely. :)

Cheers!

Actually in the IRB world rankings Fiji is ranked one spot in front of Canada.

I thought they were a couple spots behind too, I checked just before I posted and there they are in 12th and Canada in 13th.

After you posted, I went and edited the Wikipedia page for the rankings to point to the correct location on the IRB website.

Canada still has a very legitimate chance to beat Fiji though! :)

Cheers!

There is an article on the Sky Sports site about the Wales v Canada game.

Nice to see team Canada getting props from the foreign media! :)

Cheers!

not that i dislike rugby, but i once made a partially hockey related thread and it was moved out of TFC forum so quick. Im surprised a rugby, completely non TFC related thread, has made it into 30 something posts without being moved.

Many forums allow some NSR (non-soccer related) threads. It is more dependent on the moderators.

Indeed if there is enough clamour for NSR threads, quite a few forums end up with their own distinct NSR forum below their main one.

I intend to keep posting Canada's progress at the RWC in this thread, and if it reaches the 400 limit (I wish it would be that popular! hah) then I will start a second. I don't intend to flood the TFC forums with non-TFC threads, but the occassional one doesn't hurt.

Not to mention it is our national team, so I would hope that some people in here would enjoy hearing the progress of the team. :)

Besides, Blizzard already has participated in this thread, I can't imagine it is upsetting him too much! :D

Cheers!

I know. Having the god powers to choose what NSR stays and what NSR gets moved must be a gratifying feeling. ;) It's all NSR, you would think everything would follow the same standards.

Any news on when they will play in Canada, and where? Their site sucks for tickets.

Rugby Canada only has games listed for the men's team up to the last game of the groups stage at the Rugby World Cup.

Not much help at the moment, but I am guessing they are all tied up with the stuff happening in France right now.

Cheers!

Canada played Fiji today in Cardiff and lost.

Final score:

Fiji 29 - 16 Canada

With no time left Fiji was leading 22 - 16 and we were on their 1 metre line trying to tie the game. We turned the ball over and they ran the ball all the way back for a try. So close to a tie!

Our next match will be next weekend vs Japan in Bordeaux.

That's so sad that we had to lose the game like that, but wait a second, if it was 22 - 16 and we then scored a try it would have been 22 - 21, then the conversion makes it 22 - 23. So we were basically having to go for the win.

Anyway we needed to win and for Fiji to pull off an upset of Wales to have a chance.

I guess Australia also beat Wales 32 - 20 so everything is basically lining up as it should.

Now onto Japan, who will not be an easy opponent either.

Yeah I got to see their last game before France against the Newfoundland Rock team, it was a close game as Canada only had a 12 - 10 lead at the half. They ended up running away with it in the second half 40 - 10, but they did not look very good in the first half.

You are right, it would have been a victory if Canada had got that try (and conversion)! Doh.

Cheers!

Canada 12 - 12 Japan

Apparently it was a great game (I didn't see it as I was stuck at work) with Japan scoring a try (and converting) in injury time at the end of the match to tie the game and share the points with Canada.

I think our next match is against Australia, so that means we are probably gonna get run over in a big bad way! :)

Cheers!

Injury time is a word for it.

Canada had a 12-5 lead into the 84th minute. Japan, give them credit, fought hard and got a try by going the other way against the flow of play into a corner. The Japanese kicker very easily could have missed that but made a really good kick to tie it.

It was 5-0 Japan at the half. Canada came out and probably spread the ball out to the backs 2x in the entire 2nd half, the backs were simply defensive. The forwards just pounded North and retained possesion, this worked great until the Japan 22 when it got bogged down.

Well done Canada, but the team has regressed unfortunately.

Yeah I missed the game, I thought it was today, yeah d'oh!!!

Anyway my brother seen it and said the announcers were going off on Canada. He said the announcer was pissed at Canada and cheering for Japan. He called the Canadian's play appalling. (The announcer that is)

Anyway I don't really think a 12 - 12 draw with Japan is the best, I'll take it but it should be a win.

Their record against Japan is now 8 wins 9 losses and 1 draw. A win was never a guarantee, although Japan was the best chance we had for a win.

It's true if you were just listening to the announcer you would think that Japan was dominating and Canada shouldn't have even been in the tournament. Looking at the play I'd say Canada was the better team, they just have no speed or creativity with their back, While Japan doesn't have any power with their forwards and only have speed in the backs.

Do y'all think that Canada is slipping at Rugby? I know the game is really popular at an amateur level in this country. I suppose we can't ever expect Canada to improve much further unless a professional league exists in this country?

Cheers!

I don't know if we are slipping or what. I am kinda new to the seen but I think there has always been emphasis based on our forwards more then our backs.
Take the game against wales, I thought the forwards kept us in the game early on, but once wales started to move the ball outside our backs couldn't do anything to stop them.
I think the problem in rugby really parallels soccer, we have good amateur programs but then to make that step to pro, it just isn't there. Sure a lot of our national team players do play in Europe but it really isn't enough.
Unlike soccer though I don't see us getting a rugby version of TFC for example and the pro-am league is the best we can hope for at the current moment.
We really are stuck in a rut with the system.

So I guess the only thing we can do is try to get more exposure for the game, for example I didn't realize how big the game was in Newfoundland until last year when we held a world cup qualifier here.
Get a better development system in place. I really don't know what is in place, so I might be shooting stuff out of no where, but maybe a national development system with more camps and stuff like that, send our youth over to Europe, South Africa, Australia and new Zealand. Get the big teams there to take some of our younger players on.

Maybe some stuff like that and it can turn things around.
