2-0, 2 penalty kicks, Denilson and Thompson. Not a stunning performance by any means, but at this stage of the season, 3 points is 3 points no matter how you get them.

    The positives:
    - Sala, I'm happy to say, is proving us doubters wrong. His kicking is still pretty rubbish, but he made some important saves tonight.
    - Denilson is showing some real flashes of brilliance, and now he has his name on the scoresheet I can only see his confidence improving.

    The negatives:
    - Too many sloppy balls given away, particularly by the midfield. If there's one thing the boys need to work on, it's their short-ball game. Here's hoping the introduction of Denilson can go some way to improving that.

    Other points:
    - Decent performance by Wags. He had a couple of hairy moments, and there were a couple of times that Serioux and Denilson left him stranded, but he got back well to stop at least one breakaway and came so very close to getting an assist. Gbandi may struggle to claim his starting place back if Wags can keep it up.
    - Odouro really lit up the attack when he came on. I realise he's pretty much there to come on late and tear up a tired opposition back line, but it's always great to see it in action.
    - While it was nice to know that we can defend without Goodson, a better team than Toronto would've almost certainly got at least one tonight. If there's one major signing we need to make in the post-season, it's someone to shore up the defense.

Pitifull game. No width at all by either team (they both mostly played within the high school football lines)....Had Toronto had anyone who could finish they would have won 4-2....FCD's outside backs are clueless about getting w i d e ....think they ever watch any top flight games on tv...?? get the fcuk wide....and I mean w i d e no way FCD wins MLS cup unless they start to get w i d e ....

Agree with you on most points. Thought Sala was close to his old self, although he was lucky on at least one TFC miss. He was beat but got lucky when a shot hit a defenseman. The one time he conceded the free kick was an obvious admission that he isn't all there yet... He's still hurt.

Serioux is getting there, though Goodson was missed. Pitch was burned pretty bad once, though, thanks to poor finishing, didn't matter.

Toja is not back quite yet. Ricchetti was big and Denilson looks to be for real. He makes creative passes. Ricardinho is a huge talent who is close to great things. Abe is smart, if not greatly talented. AA as usual, awesome at times, invisible sometimes... Dax works hard as Hell. Moor, ok. Wags, hard working, but a deficiency. Oduro is an excellent sub.

But can they do that with their current lineup? Is it a personnel problem or tactical mistake?

They can sure as fcuk try.....it's the only chance they have....I really like Drew Moor....but....the only time he gets really wide (when FCD is in possession) is when FCD have a throw in.....and he's taking it.

While not the prettiest game it was beautiful in that we WON!

Nice set of "firsts" for tonight's game:

    - MLS Start for Denilson
    - Goal for Denilson
    - PK for Denilson

2nd PK of the year scored by Abe Thompson

3rd game Ricchetti has been Captain of the team

4th player to score a PK for FCD this year was Denilson - the team has scored a total of 5 so far

5th Shutout of the season for Dario Sala (in only 14 games). It was nice to see his side volley kick being used again.

+ Will FCD-FAN and hutchtx chime in with their offerings?

+ Did I actually get a caption contest worthy shot of Denilson?

+ How did I get two distinctly different camera angles?

    + And what about... Naomi?

The answers to these questions and more on the next episode of Love of Chairs.

Coach, what do you think of the attacking philosophy in general? Do you think (even with the less than superlative fullbacks) it can work? Does FCD's gameplan allow too many counter chances to be successful?

Keep the fcuking ball.....get really wide when in possession....spread the game...don't force it if it isn't on.....watch how many times (tonight) either gk played a short ball to a wide player....never or almost never....this game looked a lot like Southport vs Burscough in the English Conference (and that is doing a great disservice to Southport and Burscough).....

One more thing I want to add before I go to bed. Post-game, Denilson spent about 20 minutes at section 101/2 signing autographs and talking to fans. A certain DP in LA should be taking notes - this is what an "ambassador for the sport" looks like.

16,790 attendance. Which IS above average for this season.

I heard the FO put a front page advertisement in the DaMN.
They signed Denilson partly for attendance.
I wonder how they feel about the turnout.

Pitiful pitiful game. Neither team looked like they wanted to be playing. Toja was weak. Aside from some nice step-overs, Denilson couldn't complete a pass at the end of the game. Our defense was solid for their standards, but its still not good enough. Too many free headers in the box. What the hell has happened to Alvarez? He's lost his speed and his skill overnight and its a damn shame. One of the few bright spots was Serioux, he is finally back in form.

Ugh, this is one of the few times I'm actually mad after a loss.

I love creativity and it's starting to flow. Maybe our backline can string together a couple of lifetime performances in the playoffs but we shouldn't expect them to win anything for us. Ricardinho pulled off some things tonight that I don't have words for. I love Denilson's game. And finally I'm happy to say that if any of PHP's field crew visit bigsoccer then they must be laughing their a$$ off at me for b!tching about football stripes because they did an excellent job of erasing the pitch. As for the condition of the pitch I don't have a clue but it looked fine considering its use over the last few days.

e66 is right as usual. that was freakin' lousy. but anyone else catch Alvarez totally showing up Denilson in the first half in the footwork department?

that was also one of the worst commentator-ings I've ever heard. I kept thinking, "man, this new Salas guy is way better than Sala."

Without speaking for E66 or Morrow...

when I have talked to Morrow about tactics he talks about the great teams that E66 is talking about here, and the modern system of tactics most of which use a 4-3-3 with width from the back. The method E66 is talking is what FCD is trying to do.

the problem of course is that the talent in MLS is not equal to Europe or SA. But it's not athletic talent, it's mental. Don't get me wrong I am not a euro snob, I am talking about high level tactical refinement. the US player is just not as tactically savvy as the European player. The raw talent is there, I am talking about high level soccer thinking.

Point being that Morrow tries to get certain things out of certain players, but it doesn't always happen. Gbandi has the mentality to push that wide line as he should, but often doesn't have the work rate or toughness to get up and down all day. Moor who has the latter, doesn't have the instinct and timing of Gbandi, I would assume it's because he's played CB or marking back his entire career before this.

It's why you see Morrow from time to time this year talking about a right back. It's why they still try Rhine from time to time. And it's why next year I imagine they will try something different out there.

Not only that, but he didn't do it from the pitch...he was up on the railing signing the autographs from seat level. And, when we were walking away, he was walking to the locker rooms, shaking hands, still signing autographs.

I totally agree with you...THAT is what an ambassador for the sport looks like.

I admit to feeling a little guilt at watching Odouro run past a very tired TFC player. It was short-lived, but he was killing them at the end.

I will also take back what I said said publicly and privately about Sala in the past couple of weeks. He may not be 100% yet, but he was still pretty damn good last night.

I couldn't make it to the game last night but watched from home. How great was it to see that Jamaican hack Marshall give up the first PK for Toronto? It happened right in front of the Inferno so I hope you all gave him hell for the rest of the half.

I'm surprised he was allowed to jaw at the linesman like he did. And why wasn't he given a straight red?

    leg breaking hack.

Another great ambassador was Kenny Cooper who was spotted in 106 and proceeded to sign many, many autographs at halftime and into the second half. Well done.

I don't know that I've ever see a team play that badly and win by TWO goals. One maybe, never two.

Denilson was suprising in two respects--he ran more on defense than I thought he would, and his passing was awful.

His limitations were less noticeable thanks to weak games from Toja and Alvarez.

Well now, Chivas, DC, Houston and New England are successful teams that get good wide play, and their outside backs and mids are mostly Americans. Just saying....
