UVA loses to SMU 5-1 in its first test of the season. Midfiled couldn't get anything started offensively. Big blow for the Hoos.

I'm not surprised that SMU handled UVA. I suppose the scoreline of 5-1 is mildly surprising. The fact is UVA is/was terribly overated and SMU is a dynamite team. I did predict SMU over UVA in the weekly pickem thread.

    Well goddam!

I'm not gonna take the time to look it up but I bet this is the worst loss since before Bruce took over in the mid-70's.

It's only one game but George needs to get things back on track. An underachieving season and he'll join the fellow alums back in Jersey with RBNY's coaching staff.

Well UVA did lose 4-0 to UCLA in the college cup last year, same goal differential as today. So don't have to look back too far to see a similar result. The last 2 times they played stiff competition that have been hammered, a sign of things to come?

"As a team, we're still figuring things out," said Mustang Coach Schellas Hyndman. "I thought the biggest difference from our first game until now is that, simply put, our players got better. That's one of our strengths as a coaching staff. We help kids improve. That said, this is quite an accomplishment for SMU soccer."

We need some of this down in C'ville.

Schellas, always modest, huh? Get some better players and you become a better coach? GMAFB.

Well, it's only one game. And UVa did lose a lot from last year - Colaluca, Cristman, Soumare, the starting GK - those are big holes to fill.

Still, 5-1 is frikkin' embarassing and certainly makes you seem overrated. The upside of being overrated is that it reduces the chances of underachieving. So we got that going for us... which is nice... sort of.... OK, not really.

    Amen to that Brother.

Talked to some of the guys and Dane was running his mouth before the game telling everyone how George told him how much he would play BEFORE the game. Sure as shite it happens. Ther are probably more who were told the same. This stuff happens all the time. Most of the guys are really down. They know they could've come back last night but George keeps his boys on the field and subs out guys who are playing good. Its really dragging the guys down who are out there doing a good job and getting pulled anyway.

It appears from examining SMU's roster this year that half of last year's freshman recruits did not get better and improve, and are gone. Maybe the rest of the quote from above is missing - "We help our kids mprove... or we encourage them to find another sport or team."

Personally, I don't have a problem with that.

I know we call these players kids, but they are adults. This isn't youth soccer, this is big boy soccer and a lot of players who were talented at the youth level fail to make the cut at the elite programs.

Que sera. No one made these kids go to SMU. They knew - or should have - that there was a chance they wouldn't make it and they chose to go to a program like SMU anyway. Roll the dice, deal with the consequences.

I know it seems cold, and I guess it is. But in grown-up world, reality is usually cold.

And it doesn't help the lesser talents that SMU is I believe (correct me with other examples if i'm wrong) the only division one soccer program in what is the second most prolific talent producing state in the USA.

We all know SMU is the only Div 1 Mens Soccer program in the state of Texas, right? This is a big youth soccer state too. Schellas has his pick of the best around. He has a sports version of tenure at SMU, and knows all the youth coaches from Dallas to Houston to the Valley.

So why does he get knocked out early every year?

    That's a whole other issue.

Schellas is a very good coach but he should have more to show for all the talent he has had than two Final Fours and no national titles.

He definitely has a problem winning big games in the NCAAs. Kinda like George Gelnovatch. Both are tremendous regular season and conference tournament coaches and both usually do pretty well in the early part of the NCAAs. But both have underachieved, badly, in the later rounds of the NCAAs.

If they gave trophies for the quarterfinals, however, Schellas and Gelnovatch would be in the Hall of Fame.:p

Maybe he only knows the coaches, not the players. Can anyone explain specifically why Corben Bone and Cameron Brown are not at SMU? I don't know, but it seems an obvious question. From right in his own backyard, here are two freshmen both having an impact on top-notch programs. What an opportunity SMU had.

Could it be that Hyndman thinks his program is bigger than any individual player? A well-run program will consistently make the quarter-finals. Players will take you to the top, and there is a difference in my mind.

I obviously can't speak for either but maybe they wanted a better education which WFU and UNC would offer them that SMU could never. Also, if I were a player I'd rather play in the ACC than whatever conference SMU is in.

Clearly, I don't mind taking a beating from you guys about SMU never doing anything after we kicked your butt back to Virginia (5-1), but don't start in on our academics. We are ranked higher than either one of those schools (WFU or UNC) in business, law, or the arts. Most of the other posts about SMU not recruiting 2 HUGE prospects, getting knocked out of the tourny every year, etc. are pretty spot on. Your academic jab was ignorant to say the least. Idiotic would probably be more on target.
