I just wish we had a recent thread on this very subject full of pithy comments and wry, side-splitting images that we could link to fill out this thread... Oh well. Can't have everything.

I was thinking the same thing a couple weeks ago...

Too many injuries to recover from?

I heard a rumor that he has finally retired.

Just a rumor though, so don't ask me for a link or a source.

Well, my powerful Cray computer [bought at the local Walmart] has deep searched the world's soccer data banks of the last year, and has found no basis for this rumor. In fact, it finds no records which substantiate the existence of this "John O'Brien", never mind his retirement. Either O'Brien is Mythic, just lilke Nessie. or we know what Bourne's Real identity is :D

Well, we don't have to "retread " anything.

If you know, where he is, or what he is doing then say so. I am just curious about what he is doing these days.

    So no one knows?

He was released by C.D. Chivas USA of Major League Soccer following the 2006 season, making him eligible to play overseas without a transfer fee. O'Brien has been invited to Chivas training camp for the 2007 season, but cannot sign with any other MLS club unless his rights are acquired via trade.

Man, but how could this happen to such a great player? Donovan called him the best American soccer player once.

He was the best American soccer player. Unfortunately, injuries have hampered his career probably more than any U.S. player ever. I'm sure he's hung his cleats up by now, since we've heard nothing of him for over a year.

Not necessarily. I had hoped he'd stay out of soccer for a year and let his body completely heal. If he's not doing anything next season, then he's done.

I am new to California and while looking for a league I met someone who is friends with O'Brien. He told me that he was done with the MLS for now and that he plays in a regular mens league in the L.A. area. I'll try to find out more.

What are the injuries that have essentially ended his career?

Chronic hammy problems mostly. The doctors said it is caused by the way he runs. Last I heard, he was trying to change his gait to correct hammy issues.

Sorry but if you haven't played a meaningful game in two years your done at the major professional level. If you're like him and have barely played in about 4 years you're I think you're definitely done at a major level.

I would be great if Yanks Abroad could do an article on where he is now. He was such a great player. I can only hope he's enjoying whatever it is that he is up to these days.
