I really don't think you have a grasp on our real demographics/what we're selling and to whom.

Guess not.....I'm making the crazy assumption you are selling to the mass public....I keep forgetting your customers are more reasonable then everyone elses. If it makes you feel better to ignore my points, go ahead and do so.....ain't my team.

I like the idea of marketing denilson as an addition to the team instead of as a star player. Especially for newer fans to the sport (like myself) who might be more inclined to measure a player's worth by his scoring abilities - people who basically aren't as keen on the efficient ball-moving that denilson is known for.

The soccer fans around the office I work in have no clue why Denilson is such a big deal. Even the Brazilian in the office laughed when he heard we signed him, stating "hope you didn't pay too much"

On another note, the DC United game was the first game for some people around the office, they aren't interested in going back...nice job team.

It's called converting the sale. It's the difference between being an order-taker vs a salesman. Let me put it this way...it's like the JCP chick behind the jewelery counter asking you if you want to try something on vs just standing by the register twiddling her thumbs.

I guess you too have no idea who the team is selling to.

So it's not just "addressing the demand", is it? It's creating demand. It's not like there is an impedement to someone buying an FCD ticket. They are widely available, and the people in the sales office will be happy to take your order. Is it a hidden secret regarding how to obtain a ticket.....a secret that a simple google search wouldn't provide an answer to?? This is promotion, not sales. His answer that they are simply "responding" to demand is bunk. A JCP jewelery customer can't simply take the item out of the locked case, can they?

Leave me out of this please. I have nothing to do with how FCD markets the games.

    Huh?

My main job is, for lack of a better phrase, getting out there and encouraging people to take advantage of a great opportunity. Promotion is one way to look at it. But it is an odd mix of price point/timing/opportunity and capturing the attention of (mostly) soccer fans. Soccer fans who tend to have other interested/things going on.

Frankly, the biggest issues I face are the perception that MLS isn't Major League (which is why being able to promote Denilson is an effin' no brainer) and that it is worth it to a youth soccer coach/parent to take their kids to an FC Dallas game.

This Denilson thing is about reaching out to people who are fans of the sport but not fans of MLS - the kind of transition from the youth soccer market to the adult soccer market many people here consider to be important.

And you can't wait for all the conditions to be right. I'm not saying, "I promise you that Denilson will start this game." I said, barring injury, we expect him to start. That means it is a reasonable probability - but not a certainty - that he will start. Most people I'm dealing with on this tend to be soccer- and sports-savy and will understand what I mean when I say that.

FWIW, my views of the innerworkings of MLS haven't changed much since I took this job after being a relatively educated fan for eleven years. A lot of that has to do with understanding that MLS is basically a growing sport, taking it one step at a time. We don't have the resources of the Dallas Cowboys. Expecting us to act like that is, well, just not reasonable. You can expect it all you want, but it won't change what will in fact happen.

The rest of this is probably best left to an over-a-beer discussion between me and Adam, so I won't bore the rest of you.

Why not market this as the Mo Johnston game?

    Can turncoats coach without kneecaps?

    Here's a great pitch:

"Come watch FCD get a shut out! That's right their horrid, unorganized defense and goalkeeping will actually keep the door shut for once. Why? Because Toronto's offense is so bad, they couldn't score on you daughters U-12 team!"

Should we start a new thread about the actual game?:) Or should we change the title to Denilson: Marketing 201?

I am actually very excited about this game and a bit disappointed that the rare weekend away is happening when Denilson might/should/is scheduled to start. I will be scronging for a bar on the left coast that will show the game. There were are handful of special moments in the game last night when passes and runs were strung together that gave glimpses to what this team could become in the attack.

I also hope that Serioux is truely back and in good form because if Goodson is out we will need another strong performance. Pitch absolutely scares me sometimes and Wags does not give me much confidence either. I'd like for us not to be the team that allows TFC to break their scoreless streak.

I am a small consumer. But, I will be bringing 3 families and thier kids to Saturday's game. These are people that never go, but were interested in my description of Denilson. We were making plans before we were aware of the ball promotion. Otherwise, maybe just me and my boy would go. So, from my little corner of the world, Denilson motivated me to tell them about this one.

As for Denilson, I watched the game against DC on TV, (in Austin). Did they pass the ball more than 3 times to him? But, last night, the little flicks, chips, and spectacular passes were top shelf. I think that he and Pescadito are going to combine for some awesome goals.

Denilson is obviously feeling his way around this team, but you see enough signs to know that some spectacular moments are around the corner. No way am I going to miss it.

I can understand the "not wanting to get dissapointed" thing, but some of you are carrying it to the extreme. It is ok to enjoy getting a terrific player on the roster. Sit back and let him entertain you.

    Not telling...
Since I'm one of those out-of-town fans...tell me - is it worth the drive to see a team that hasn't scored in 756 (?) minutes challenge our Hoops? Even if we are tired I can't see it being much of a game especially on grass where TFC hasn't won yet.

Well they did beat us 0-4 on their turf, so it will be worth it for me to see us play them and hopefully get a 6-0 result..

Re: Dallas-Toronto pre-game thread - come see Denilson in his first home start!

Does anyone have an idea when the dreaded pointy ball lines show up this year? How many high school games are scheduled there also?

Re: Dallas-Toronto pre-game thread - come see Denilson in his first home start!

Thank you for mentioning this, I had meant to look for this info. Here is what I've got so far.

    9/6 - Wakeland vs Centennial
    9/14 - Cent. vs Sachse
10/5 - Frisco vs The Colony
10/12 - Cent. vs McKinney North
10/19 - Cent. vs Frisco (Frisco Derby!!!)
    10/26 - Wakeland vs Princeton
11/2 - Frisco vs McKinney North
    11/9 - Cent. vs McKinney

Pretty busy schedule, just about every Friday night. And this is only FISD events. Last year a Plano team played a Dallas team at PHP, so there might be other games. Looks likes lines on the field from here on out, including the playoffs.

Re: Dallas-Toronto pre-game thread - come see Denilson in his first home start!

So I was thinking that the 4-3-3 we witnessed against Seattle looks like what we might expect when/if Cooper returns. However, Denilson seemed more effective centrally, which would suggest a 4-3-1-2. We know Morrow likes that formation and it might offer some more protection for our permeable back line. I still think our fullback participation on the offensive end is incredibly overrated but it is what it is and has had its moments. If we can count on Alvarez and Toja not to get caught up too much and remember to participate defensively, it could be tasty.

In the meantime, we could use either Abe, Oduro, or Ricardinho up front with Ruiz. I lean towards Ricardinho to split the difference between Abe and Oduro.

If I was in charge of FCD marketing, I would set up an area on Field 1 with a life-size pinata of Tyrone Marshall. Then I'd charge some money for anyone wishing to slide-tackle his leg. And if you break his leg off, you win some FCD gear.

    But I'm bush-league like that.

Excellent challenge - starting lineup 2009- should we start a new thread? :)

    How about this one:

---KJC ---- Kaka (that's why we kept Saragosa :) )

---Denilson (cuz Tex says he'll be there) ---- Dempsey (back to his home state)

---Toja (MLs will have 3rd DP by then)---Dax

--- Gbandi (starts for Liberia after all) --- Goodson --- Serioux (Shifty Canadian) --- Moore (coming off his 2nd Good Morning Texas Appearance)

    Burse (Sala finally retires)
