Quite pathetic actually. If you want to see some real ultras check out the Greeks, Turks, Serbs, Croats, they have the best.

    Balkans, Kings of the Ultras!

Either quote somebody else and look at their tags, which are youtube tags

    [youtube] [ /youtube]

Now what you do is take the youtube url
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=scP8E0NEYk0

and take out everything up to and including the "="

what you are left with is the "scP8E0NEYk0". Put that in between the youtube tags

Yeah, there's some great groups in the Balkans. But the truth is once you get past Olympiakos, AEK, Panathinaikos, Aris, Zvezda, Partizan, Zagreb and Split there is not much left. Maybe a couple of good Bulgarian groups which qualify as Balkans. And the Turks have several well supported teams, but they're not Balkans.

The great thing about Germany is that there are so many well supported clubs.

If you want the more radical and violent support like in the Balkans, all you have to do is look at the smaller 3rd division German clubs. Their style is much more Ultra.

But in the top divisions the atmosphere is different. There are still traditional terraces with low prices that help bring in more students and working class people which adds to atmosphere. Despite the low prices, the quality of the product is great ... some of the best stadiums in the world, and the football on the pitch is also good. All these things together is why Germany has the highest average of any football league in the world. There are also fewer radical ultra elements, and the atmosphere is more of a community celebration. I personally never liked hooligan culture too much, and maybe that's why I admire the Germans so much. They incorporate all the good things about terrace culture and none of the bad.

But for the future, Turkish and Greek clubs are definitely in a growth phaze. I'd also add to that several clubs in Russia, Ukraine, Poland and Romania. As the clubs grow in quality, more supporters in those countries will fill the stadiums and maybe one day surpass what is happening in Germany now.

yeah i definately agree with that.
the teams in the balkans have some incredible support...but it's only a select few teams....it seems the fans there only support the succesful teams

Look at France, Germany, Italy...and pretty much any team from 1st to 3rd division can get some intense support (4th division if you're in Italy)

i have to say my favourite fan-scenes are in Italy and Turkey...with France and Germany right behind.

i do believe that Ultras are the true spirit of football...they can get such a bad reputation, for example when i was in Freiburg and the way the media handled my great comments about the ultras...But ******** it, when i went there it was the Ultras who took me in and showed me the best hospitality, the wir sind finke pricks didn't even make an effort to contact me.

    heres some more from Freiburg.

Heavily depends on your definition of "intense" :D.

I'd like to add that I don't consider Ultras to be the best thing since sliced bread though.

I really like ultras, i'm not officially one myself but i stand and sing with them at every game and am friends with many of them.

They have their downsides, but ultimately i believe they only get a bad reputation due to their "links"(which are often non-existant) with the hooligan factors in clubs.

hooligans destroy football and all it represents. Ultras on the other hand create the atmosphere, the fan culture which is so present in this game, they increase the passion for a club, and do many more things. football wouldn't be the same without the ultra movement and i'm glad it exists.

The only downside in ultras is when they get that pompous "I'm an ultra" mentality and act all egoistic and superior because of it. That's stupid, but that's only the case with certain individuals, not with the great majority.

    Some great videos ;)

But don't compare Ultras in Germany and Ultras in the Balkans. It's a completely different world and Ultras are on a completely different level. Dinamo - Werder matches in Bremen and Zagreb were great examples of that.

Please can we not make this a dick measuring contest? ;)

I'm torn on the whole Ultra thing.

The thing that annoys me the most that at least here in Germany a lot of groups look and sound totally the same, there's absolutely no individualism.

Furthermore I love spontaneous support and hate too much orchestrated stuff.
I also have to turn matches to mute on TV when you can hear the megaphone and capo louder than the fans.

How does it support your team if you and 100 other fans go on a away-trip and swing flags like mad for 90 minutes and sing the same tune for 90 minutes?
If I watch those vids on youtube I kinda feel sorry for them and I'm not impressed.

Or the whole "let's look like Antifa" thing (here the latest BTSV-example from last week's Oberliga derby)?!

Here most "Ultras" are between 16 and 20, that's very different in Italy for example.

I think the thing that alientates me the most is that a lot people don't really join a Ultra group to support the team but to look cool and film each other and then jerk off to the videos on youtube. At least here in Hannove the Ultra part of the stadium consists of 50% posers and people that are "too cool and stylish" to do old-school support that would make the average fan join in.
They care more about what other fans think about their support than what their team thinks.

I have have to say I only took a very cursory view here and I never really had the intention to look into it further - I have to admit, when I go to a game I stand there for 90 minutes and do little else as watching the field. From my limited exposure I got the personal definition of ultra as "some pompous kid who doesn't have to shave yet but takes going to a football match way too seriously", though :D. As long as they don't bother anyone (including me :D) I'm fine with it. Rhetoric about "defending your banner" and "unconditional loyality" like you find on Ultras website slightly creeps me out however.

I sing I do humbas, I jump up and down but thats because I still have the energy to do so. ;)

I actually prefer going to Everton games than Hertha games. I pay attention to the game more because there's less "physical" activity and the stadium is nicer (i.e. closer to the pitch).

but i think that's half the fun of the football match.

First you got the best sport infront of your eyes...and when you're in the middle of that atmosphere, i can't explain...It's the greatest experience and i wish i could do this every weekened for home and away matches.

The Ultras movement for me, is something that HAD to happen :D
i really love the ideals of it, the atmosphere...Of course i can't be one myself, but when your teams craziest ultras tell you "you're one of them" or "you're crazy"....you know theres something going on there, and i would be an Ultra if i lived around Freiburg.

I have to agree with Fraeulein here...she is right, that too many fanscenes in Germany sing the same melodies...But hey, have you seen what fanscenes look like in America or Canada??? if you can even call it that haha.

anyways, i got no problems with the regular fans...But i do have a problem with people getting seasons tickets or watching matches in a supporters section and not getting involved...the supporters section should be the place where the Ultras mentality stands...If you don't want to help support the team, please sit in the Haupttribüne...

it's very annoying for me to be singing when people around you just stand there looking cool.

    ULTRAS PER SEMPRE!!!

Depends on where you are. Toronto is pretty good...and having experienced the Barra Brava for DC United I would be inclined to seriously disagree with that statement.

I disagree. I don't think an ultra group needs to be 100% participation 100% of the time. Sometimes I like to stand back to the side somewhat, whenever I'm trying to concentrate on the game more. Sure I'll still sing, just less jumping, bouncing and flag waving. But then on other days the frenzy takes over.

In my experience I've found that not all matches are created equal. Some opponents are not worthy enough to get all worked up about. I always found it funny when I see groups celebrating in a frenzy when they're beating up on a smaller club. Usually at 3-0, I'm spending more time socializing with my friends than singing.

Thanks for the respect. Although DC has the biggest numbers in the US, we know our place in the big scheme of things. We would never try to compare ourselves to other global groups outside of the US, because we know that there are many countries that have better groups in their 2nd and 3rd divisions. In fact some of us come from those countries, and have supported other clubsin the past.

But what I like about the DC group is that it's not driven by territorial and racist phobia, but instead by the positive experience of supporting the team together. It's kind of the way I imagined Denmark NT and Scotland NT supporters after I've read articles about how friendly and fun they were.

True..but then you are comparing size. Doesn't mean they are less loyal and/or fanatical...I wouldn't say other clubs are "better". Also...that is always growing.

Agreed. I was at the Home Opener with NattyBo and Riz and was at the tailgate for several hours before the game and EVERYBODY was welcoming, friendly and fairly hilarious.

I'm staying where the hell I want. Unless "the Ultra mentality" can show me a ticket specifically for the very point I chose, it can ******** off.

if you don't wanna support, don't stand by the ultras and be a stiff...
go sit down with your family please...if you don't like the supporters culture, don't go where it is, it's as simple as that...And i'm sure you don't.

we all have opinons here don't we?
