I forgot to start this thread back in June (halfway through the year) but I'm starting it now.

What are your picks for best movies of the year to date?

I (and I know others on the board) will pick movies we consider could be classics going forward (or at least be getting award nods this year) but if you just like popcorn movies post your picks too.

I'll go first. Every year I try to come up with a Top 10 for myself. Sometimes it doesn't make it to 10 sometimes it may be one or two over. However, this year I believe has been very weak.

Nine months in and I can only come up with 3 films that will definitely make my list and 1 that could possibly make it.

The fall and winter looks quite strong with studios releasing the films they hope to garner awards with so I do have hope for the remainder of the year but here are my choices so far.

    In no order:

    Once

La Vie en Rose (also called La Mome)

    Zodiac

I would put Black Book on my list (I just saw it last weekend) but it's actually a 2006 film.

And the one that may or may not make it:

    Bug

I see movies way late, because I don't pay to see new movies...ever.

But of 2007 releases that I've seen, I've only really liked Zodiac so far.

I have to throw Black Book into this mix.

That and Once are the only films I've loved so far.

This movie is all sorts of awesome. Lumet brings it.

Now that it's fall I'm sure my list will be getting filled in more.

I quite enjoyed "La Mome", Zodiac, Planet Terror and Knocked up, all for different reasons, obviously. But there isn't one movie that really stands out this year. Not all that great a vintage up to now, really.

300 is my best movie of 2007. It is also the best movie of 2006. And 2005. In fact, all Oscars for Best Picture will now retroactively be given to 300 going back to 1927, at which point 300 will receive the award for Best Music Hall Revue. It will then receive all awards going back in time, through the Honorarium for Vaudeville Greatness through the Queens Blessing of Play-Acting at the Globe through the Icon of Zeus Recognizing Tragedy all the way back to the first doubly excited monkey cry at seeing something awe inspiring.

I also saw Stardust, and I really liked it as well.

Wow, I guess I missed this the first time around.

    The two top-notch entries are:

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

    Zodiac

Those seven are likely to be in my top ten. The next three are in it now, but I would guess are borderline by end of year.

    The Invasion

    Michael Clayton

    Into the Wild

I haven't had the opportunity to see The Ass of JJ or No Country for Old Men yet but I'm betting they would both make my year end list.

I'm also really looking forward to There Will Be Blood and Juno.

I just read there is no dialogue during the first 20 minutes of TWBB. Hmmm.....

Should honorably mention Bridge to Terebithia, which to me is just a very good kids tearjerker, and Rescue Dawn, either of which could sub in.

The buzz on There Will Be Blood is great, but who knows? Juno i see tonight, actually. Charlie Wilson's War is a terrific book, but the movie could go either way.

I was interested when I first heard about this movie I was intrigued but the one preview I saw did not impress me at all.

Plus, I've never thought Julia was that great of an actress and now whenever I see her I don't see a performance, I just see Julia Roberts.

I'll throw in Eastern Promises, just because I haven't seen it mentioned so far. Haven't seen in but from what I hear it's one of the best of the year.
