    Hello MLS,

I am contacting MLS because I want to discuss SuperLiga. First of all, this years SuperLiga was somewhat of a success, however there was no major television contract in the US, therefore it was hard to watch. The tournament is supposed to be North American based, so why not include other North American countries. Although the leagues might not be as strong, look at the Champions League for example, sometimes you are going to get Real Madrid facing a team like Club Brugge from Belgium. My idea is that you include the top 2 from each MLS Conference for automatic qualification. The top 4 in the Mexican Liga for automatic qualification. Now you have 8 teams, which was the format this year. In my opinion this is too small, you need to have 16 teams, and 4 groups to make it a quality tournament. My idea is you take the domestic league winners from Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Guatamala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Belize and give them automatic qualification. So now we have 15 teams and you might ask, how do we get the 16th? A playoff between the winners of the U.S Open Cup and the winner of the Mexican Apertura. This gives teams from the USL a chance to get into SuperLiga. You could ask what if the winner of the Apertura won the domestic league as well? You find the runner-up or the semifinalist that wasnt a top 4 team in the Clausura and you play a playoff to determine the 16th spot. My idea is that the SuperLiga starts in Early July. You make the championship Venue known before the season starts. The final is played at a large stadium. The final takes place December in a warm weather Climate. You play two leg ties with each team in your group, just as the Champions League. Two-legged ties because each team has a home game. You do the tiebreaker on away goals just like the Champions League in the result of a tie after two legs. There is a draw to decide the groups after all 16 teams are known. Lets say for next year these are the four groups...

    ---Group A---
    D.C United
    F.C Belize (Belize)
    A.D. Isidro Metapán (El Salvador)
    Pachuca

    ---Group B----
    Houston Dynamo
    Xelaju MC (Guatamala)
    Real Esteli (Nicaragua)
    New England Revolution

    ---Group C----
    Chivas USA
    Victoria (Honduras)
    Deportivo Saprissa (Costa Rica)
    Tigres

    ---Group D---
    Chivas Guadalajara
    Alianza (Panama)
    Club America
New York Red Bull (SuperLiga Qualification Playoff Winners)

All four groups play two leg ties and the top two from each group move on to the quarter finals. The games are played during two week days that are subjectively made only for SuperLiga every two weeks or a month, just like the Champions League (Tuesday and Wednesday) The days for SuperLiga could be Wednesday and Thursday. Lets say the group stages take up to the end of September. The Quarterfinal ties are the following after the draw..

    D.C United vs Xelaju MC

Chivas Guadalajara vs New England Revolution

    Deportivo Saprissa vs Alianza

    Pachuca vs Chivas USA

The Quarter Finals are two legged ties as well and are back to back weeks leading into the middle of October. Lets say these are the semifinals after the draw...

New England Revolution vs Deportivo Saprissa

    D.C United vs Pachuca

The first of the two legs begins in late October and ends in early November. Lets say that D.C United ends up playing Deportivo Saprissa in the final. The 2008 SuperLiga Final is played at the brand new Estadio Chivas or otherwise known as the Jorge Vergara Cabrera. This is a warm weather Climate along the Pacific Coast.

The final is played on the 3rd of December and has a lot of hype. The MLS rents off hotels for all of the D.C United supporters. The Superliga Splits the tickets in half and splits the fans in half to oppisite sides. D.C United has the best supporting base in the MLS and I believe they would be great and influence the play of their players. The final is shown on ESPN 2 with many viewers across North and South America and even some in Europe. Lets say the final plays out that D.C United wins. The Winner is given 7 million dollars. This tournament already sounds more exciting then the tournament that went on this year. An amazing tournament that many Americans can seriously embrace. Make this tournament be much more important one then the Concacaf Champions Cup. Another idea I have is to make the Champions Cup more like a Uefa Cup and have the third place teams from each MLS Conference go into the Champions Cup. Doesnt this idea just excite you. It is my wish that you forward this email to the commisioner himself, Don Garber, I would really appreciate to get his feedback. I am more a fan of European Soccer and I am dying to have an amazing tournament go on in the United States. This years tournament went far too fast and for the tournament to go from the beginning of July to the final on December the 5th makes it very interesting. This tournament will be loved by all supporters of Soccer and will without a doubt convert people to love the game as well. Once again please forward this to Mr. Garber I think he would find this very interesting and important.

    Sincerely,

    Jake Siino

There are these things called "paragraphs". Generally speaking, one would use these "paragraphs" to separate ideas.

Otherwise, you're getting WAY ahead of yourself. This year was only supposed to be an exhibition of sorts to gauge the interest. Judging by the great matches we saw, and the decent turn-out, I'd say the interest is there.

Therefore, next year (which won't be an invitational tourney) will likely have wider TV Coverage, which was honestly the only thing lacking this year. Sure, they could have promoted the tourney more, but the same could be said for MLS' regular season.

As far as adding other countries into the mix, give Superliga a few years as strictly an MLS/FMF tourney, then bring in a team like Saprissa. Adding clubs from El Salvador and Belize would only weaken the tournament.

Why do you think you're the only one that's come up with the idea?

There is no point to invite other CONCACAF teams. This tournament isn't about a confederation champ -- that's what the CCC is for and it's perfectly fine. If CONCACAF wants to modify that with group stages or whatever, they can.

SuperLiga is about making money. The only countries in CONCACAF that are worthwhile for generating large revenues are Mexico and the US (and Canada, but they are technically involved as TFC can qualify too). Adding teams from Costa Rica or Guatemala or wherever does not enhance the marketing/TV value of SuperLiga and won't generate sufficient revenue to warrant it. So, it's just not gonna happen.

I personally think that if -- at some very distant point in the future -- SuperLiga wants to expand, it will look to South America, not to other CONCACAF countries.

Thats true. Each league could poney up a million dollars for a select amount of spots. Say a million for four teams half million for two teams and three hundred thousand for a single team. Limit it to invite or something which already exsist like last years standings. Try to make it. As even has possible but might have to shorten the season. Or just do it through the holidays at years end. Tournament could possibly get five million dollar purses or what not. But for now there is too much soccer and it shows for just a 13 team league. Right now that Million Dollars should be a go getter but in the future could host something else. When time permits.

That's an interesting idea. I certainly think that the only way to get a real continental tournament is to merge the CCC with the Superliga - maybe into the Concacaf Superliga. I would love to something in North America similar to the UEFA Champions League. The fact that the Superliga even exists shows how lazy Concacaf has been in getting their act together.

Anyways, I digress. There are some issues which make it difficult to hold a Champions League type tournament:

    1) Scheduling. It is hard to find a time when all clubs can compete at the top of their game and not during their preseason. The Mexican Primera has the Apertura (from August to December) and the Clausura (January to April) while the MLS' season runs from April to November. Also, Caribbean and Central American teams hold tournaments to decide who qualifies for the Champions Cup. Should those tournaments still exist in a new system?

    2) Stadium quality. Concacaf needs to have stadium standards like UEFA does to ensure the safety of players and fans. While this isn't a problem for Mexican clubs and the MLS, it certainly will be for smaller and poorer Central American and Caribbean nations.

    Here are my ideas

    Qualification (UEFA Style):

    4 Teams (2 Automatic, 2 Continental Qualification):
MLS (MLS Cup Winner, SS Winner and next two highest ranked teams)
    Mexican Primera

    3 Teams (1 Automatic, 2 Continental Qualification):
    Costa Rica
    Honduras

    2 Teams (1 Automatic, 1 Continental Qualification):
    Guatemala
    Trinidad and Tobago

    1 Team (1 Continental Qualification)
    El Salvador

    1 Team (Regional Qualification)
    Canada (Cup Winner)
    Nicaragua
    Belize
    Panama
    All remaining Caribbean FAs

Here is the hierarchy of qualification:
    Concacaf Superliga (8 teams)
    Continental Qualifiers (10 teams)
North American Qualifiers (4 teams) Caribbean Qualifiers (29 teams)

Two teams from NA Qualifiers go to Continental
4 teams from Caribbean Qualifiers go to Continental

    Scheduling:

    1) Qualifying

    February - March

    2) Group Stage 1-3

    Early April - Mid May

    3) Group Stage 4-6

    Late July - August

    4) Quarterfinals

    September

    5) Semifinals

    Late October

    6) Finals

Early December (After MLS Cup and Apertura Championship)

C'mon dude. You and I and everybody on these boards knows that of the tens of thousands of posts on the subject, his is the first one to mention bringing in other nations.

It's so simple in its approach, yet so... original.

I for one and ecstatic that we have genius amongst us.

    You should be thankful, too.

Per'aps you should consider adding your "ideas" to existing threads????

No team in MLS would be able to sell more than 5k tickets to a game against a team from nicaragua.

    *cough* DC United *cough*

We drew nearly 4k at the Soccerplex for a match against Harbor View Jamaica in early March, with temps hovering around 30 and icy winds.

As long as the match were held at RFK (or a future SSS) United would have at least 10k on hand for any central american opponent.

The point stands that those games would have very low interest outside of ex-pats from the central american country and the hardcore fans.
