I went to the A's game on Saturday (9/1) and they gave Travis Buck jersey t-shirts to the first 10,000 fans. On the shirt is a tag that says "SOCCER IS BACK. Place your 2008 Earthquakes season ticket deposit at SJEARTHQUAKES.COM." I just thought I'd share...
Don't forget that according to recent articles, the San Jose Sharks either already is or soon will be part owner of the San Jose Earthquakes. If that's true, then we'll soon be seeing even more cross-promotion with the Quakes. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Good we'll take it! There was a bit of the cross promotion when the Sharks was involved with the Quakes early on so no surprise there. The more crossover the better!
No kidding. One shirt would have been more than what they did. Aside from that, this is just great news.
that's a good bit of promotion .... they should give A's season tickets holders free Quakes tickets to a game. you know, give 'em a freebie and get them to try it. hopefully some come back, you know? but all in all, this is good to see and I assume it's just the beginning.
I hope it is, too. I remember several years ago when the Quakes were still in the slimy tentacles of AEG, I was watching FSBA, and they had quite a few ads for the A's. They were well done, and humorous, which seems to be mandatory now. When I saw those commercials, I thought to myself, "Now if the Quakes would only get promoted like that....." Looks like the wish may come true. Hope so.
Hell ya, I would love some extra tickets to get some friends interested. For me, Lou Wolff is the best thing since micro brews. He really plays to my obcessions, baseball and soccer. Now if he could only find a way to support rally racing.
The A's have the best commericals in baseball. All the more reasion why I think the Quakes are really going to take off this time.
I think it's weird. There are very few people that I've come across that are fans of multiple sports. People tend to to like 1 sport and stick to it - I'm one of them.
In Toronto MLSE have been cross-promoting TFC with Raptors and Maple Leafs...It does make sense because many fans are actually rather willing to support a local team in whatever sport there is. Despite them perhaps not being a fan of that particular sport. And if Wolff can get people to feel that Sharks, Quakes and A´s are THE local Bay Area teams we have taken a huge step forward..The value of that is enormous in the long run.
This, generally, is true. However, it doesn't hurt to get the word out that there is such a team as the San Jose Earthquakes. At least puts the Quakes on radar.
really? I would've said it's just the opposite. I've come across very few people who are fans of just one sport ... especially in the u.s. where you have football, basketball, baseball, soccer and hockey teams to choose from. not to mention, motor sports, golf, tennis, etc .... there's just so much to choose from. The only thing I love more than a good soccer game is any game with the Denver Broncos. And I love to watch the Denver nuggets, too. There's just too much, I couldn't limit myself to just one. which is why a little cross-promotion with the A's can't do anything but help.
it's not baseball ... but check out this ad campaing for the dallas stars hockey team: (from the L.A. Times morning briefing): NBA is ideal target for slap shotSome might call it roughing. We call it a clean hit. The NHL's Dallas Stars have put up a billboard near the American Airlines Center they share with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. It reads: "The only thing our refs shave is the ice." NBA Commissioner David Stern, dealing with the fallout of Tim Donaghy's guilty plea for betting on games he officiated, had no comment. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who doesn't mind seeing Stern squirm a little, didn't bristle at the Stars' swipe. "I think it's hysterical," Cuban told the Dallas Morning News. "Good for them. It's a fun ad." Other billboards in the Stars' "Come into the cold" campaign designed by Door Number 3, an Austin advertising agency, take shots at other sports. "One game a week? Is the N in NFL for Nancy?" And "Maybe baseball should stop using the word sacrifice."
Although I am primarily a soccer fan, I appreciate other sports/teams. A good sporting experience goes a long way to selling a team or sport to the casual fan. I spent my birthday 2 weeks ago in Fenway cheering the Sox not for the sport, but to experience the famed atmosphere and never ending fan buzz at Fenway. I was not disappointed and now that park is a "must see" whenever I visit Boston (along w/ the Sam Adams Brewery tour). The A's are a lot closer to home, and the cross pollination will be much more doable for baseball/soccer fans here. Our job is to create the buzz in the stands which should not fade: win, lose, or draw. We do that well, and casual fans will keep coming back
Now that we're discussing this topic I ask myself this question, what are these other teams doing in order to promote or advertise their teams because I've noticed a lot of empty stands at some of these games I've been watching. Take for example stadiums like Columbus, and Dallas I'm not going to include New York or Kansas City because they still don't have SSS but those other two teams have been noticeable since I've seen some of those games on tv. What are the owners doing in order to sell their product because it seems like their not doing anything at all in that department since it looks the same on tv and it seems like it hasn't changed at all
Good questions. I haven't watched this year, but last year I remember seeing afternoon games at PHP in Frisco and the stadium was a sea of red seat backs. Pretty embarrassing and I am not a Dallas fan. Sometimes it's just too blatant to let slide....we have to ask "what the heck is going on?".
Yes I'm with you on that SJ_oldtimer it is very embarassing and not that I'm trying to pick a fight or capping on any of those teams but its an important subject for the owners and us fans because it hurts every one in common if we want the sport or league to succeed here. And now that we are getting our team back of course I would like for every team to have success in its attendance. Because if one team has success the whole league has success and that is how this league should be runned "ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL" in other words SOLIDARITY ! ! ! I do completely understand that it's the investors responsibility to take care of those discrepencies or issues but I still believe that it should also be taken care of at the league level so that there can be more accountability involved. Maybe having management personnel of each team meeting once a month to share and evaluate the failures or success they've had with the tactics or tools they use to draw more people in. I think that something needs to get done fast...... because I know for sure that it can be fixed and it can work but it's just a matter of getting this organized........and that's the key ! ! !
The entire league suffers from the perceptions that people take away from seeing the empty seats on TV.
The entire league suffers but what are they really doing about it now that they have contracts with some of these networks, because it sure doesn't look good to watch these games with half empty stadiums. Does MLS even care about that isssue ?
At least the seats are red. Watch a poorly-attended Chicago home game sometime. Blue seats! What were they thinking!?! I like the way Atlanta (Silverbacks, USL-1) used various colors in the seats in their stadium so that if you don't look closely you might just think they were full of people. Cute trick, that. Are all MLB games sold out? How about overseas soccer games? Sure, the EPL fills their stadia, but if you look at attendance figures for a lot of lower level European leagues, they're pretty pathetic even by MLS standards.
