Given that it took me 30 seconds to disprove his claim about non-playoff team coaches not being fired, probably.

PRK... who ever is coming up with those salary expenditures need to keep working on them to make sure they are acurate. I find it pretty hard to believe that the Rapids are up there at the top of the MLS in team salary expenditures based on the following current list of who is making big bucks:

Top 10 MLS Salaries in 2007

    1. Beckham LA $6.5 million
    2. Blanco Chicago $2.7 million
    3.Angel New York $1.6 million
    4.Reyna New York $1.25 million
    5.Donovan LA $900,000
    6.Adu Real Salt Lake $550,000
    7.Ruiz Dallas $435,000
    8. Mathis New York $410,000
    9. Twellmen New England $350,000
    10. Robinson Toronto $315,00

I may be wrong, but I don't see any of our guys on that list.... Who ever wrote the article that you referenced would have more credibility if he or she gave some specific numbers, not just a broad brush statement. Frankly, I don't have the time to look it up for myself, I'm getting ready to drive up to LA to see the Galaxy vs Salt Lake game tonight. But it would nice to see all the salary totals by team.
Somehow, I have a real hard time remembering when the Rapids paid " any" of our players that kind of money, unless if was Clint Mathis last year (but I think RSL picked up most of the tab on that particular trade). Who am I missing?

Miguel, the quote from the article is:

They aren't claiming that we're at the top overall, just taht we're spending more than 3 of the top teams in the league. The only United, New England, or Chivas player on that list you posted is Twellman, and with Pablo + Kirovski I can believe we're paying more in salary that New England, even with Twellman.

Go Rapids.... Did you come up with the salary numbers to support this claim or did someone else? The reason I ask is that I am looking at the salaries of 22 guys who have played on and off with the Rapids and are still on the team or with the reserves. All the regular starters(16) and six more guys like Wasson, Harvey, Hughes, Keel, Colaluca, and Kimura. However, I may have missed a couple of more who earn far less than $20K whose salaries should added in to the total. In any case My total 2007 Rapids payroll came out to be a little over $1,755,000 dollars. (almost the total paid for 2 Landon Donovans) Gotta run...

Jason....I just did a quick run the salary numbers on about 12 or 14 of the Revolution players who I know are still starting, and still on their roster, ( there were at least 7 or 8 more whose status I was unsure about and I did not add in their salaries), however, their totals were pretty close to that $1,755,000 figure I came up with the Rapids players.

If I had more time I'd get a current roster and crunch the numbers again. Someone on the MLS underground blog site has lot of the salary data that someone needs to use to do the comparisons. However, they must understand that list contains players who have been traded or released, and I'm unsure if some of their salaries remains on the team books .

I'll take a bit of time, knowledge and hard work if someone really wants to see all the MLS team salary totals, and then knowing how things work at the top, it will be an "educated guess".....

$2,299,670 is the total salary for players on the team right now. That doesn't include anything for Osorno ($100k? $200k?) and assuming Sanneh is making less than all but 2 or 3 of the senior players.

So there are 13 teams, each with 20 - 25 players, and you want to worry about the top 10? Those matter but all those other players add up in a hurry.

And who said the Rapids are at the top? WHO? My point is simply that there are at least 3 teams that are playing excellent football, at least as far as the MLS goes, who have spent more on player salaries than the Rapids have. The point being to question why Clavijo is making an excuse that as best as we can figure is not based on fact. I don't think anyone is arguing that the Rapids are near top in the league both in overall salary expenditures nor in terms of salary cap salary.

That is to say, if the top 3 teams in the league have all performed far better than the Rapids while spending less, why is this team as a whole struggling so much this year? Surely no one can claim it's as simple as being that the team isn't willing to spend more on salaries.

Anyway, anyone have any info on what Daniel "I'm not fat, I'm just over-beered" Osorno are making or Tony "Minnesota God" Sanneh are making for salary? Rumor has it that Sanneh is making something around $50-70k for the last half of the year which would put him around $130k for the year if his salary wasn't prorated since it was after July 1. And that would, IIRC, mean that the Rapids are the only team in the league to have 4 defenders on the roster this season, at least at one point or another, making 6 figures (Petke, Erpen, Vanney, Sanneh).

Can somebody create a google spreadsheet (or the equivalent) so we can see how the numbers add up with current rosters for the various teams in the league?

I think prk's whole point is that there are player moves all season long, and while the Washington Post did publish player salaries, players like Osorno weren't on the list, and Sanneh hadn't been all shuffled around at that point. Jordan Harvey was recently promoted to Sr. Dev. player, so do you think he's still only getting $12,900? Are we still paying for Kyle? Are we paying for Medhi? How much? And we are not the only team that has made player moves like that. So totaling the team salaries isn't a very straightforward proposition.

    60K for Sanneh isn't bad.

138K for Osorno!?!?!? Great job FC.

    Rapids making 6 figures:
    Pablo - 280K
    Jovan - 200K
    Casey - 180K
    Cancela - 156K
    Cooke - 147.5K
    Osorno - 138K
    Niko - 130K
    Petke - 126K
    Erpen - 115K

Total: 1.472 million for 9 players.
Total salary for today's starting 11: 1.155 million

We started today's game with 571.5K not in the starting lineup. To be fair you should take Cooke out, as he's a starter when not injured but you're still looking at 425K riding the bench in Cancela, Osorno, and Nico.

Ok this is getting old so I hope you take the time to look up these numbers and do the math so we are all working from the same sheet of music. First go to the MLS Players Union web site... http://www.mlsplayers.org/salary-info.html Then hit resources at the top. then hit player salary info by club. the info I have dtd Aug 31 2007.

Scroll down to the Rapids and you will find the names of 29 players and you will see each player's' base salary listed, but there is no total team salary figures listed. So you'll have to use your calcualtors to come up withteam totals. The total salary figure for the Rapids is $2,222,903. Remember that's for 29 players including developement players, and yes it includes both Tony Sanneh ($60K) and Osorno ($138K). Note...MLS teams can only have 28 on the roster, exception would be to cover season ending injuries. I assume Clifton Wilmes (#29) is using Dan Gargans slot.

Now if you want to add up the salaries of the other teams, you will find that not all teams are carrying the same number of players, so be sure to take that into consideration ie. Dallas lists 31 players (approx $2,790,000), and they vary from team to team. Hopefully you should all be on the same sheet of music.

However, all of those totals and comparisons are meaningless unless you take into consideration a couple of important factors MLS allocations/ Designated Player allocations and how they are related to team salary caps and their financial implications to each team in the league. You might want to google " See Soccer by Ives Galarcep. His blog has got some good info on the current 2007 MLS alocations and some interesting observations, ie. DC United signed Emillio early this year and they still 5 allocations that they haven't used.

I have just read through a lot of the information on MLS allocations, the "Beckham rule", and designated players and their relation to tem salary caps . It's all available over on the MLS web site. Needless to say I came away a little confused. It's not cut and dry as it relates to team slary expenditures, unless you take these into consideration. Maybe some of the Rapids fans in Denver could call in Tuesday night during the "From the pitch show" and get some straight answers as to just where the Rapids stand in regards to money spent, or not spent this year. If no one calls in maybe I will... gotta run....

    and that's a problem.

I really don't care how much money KSE spends on players. Based on my following the major sports in the U.S. for many years, I don’t believe there is much correlation between team payroll and team performance. But I do believe your best players should be paid the most and they should be on the field, not the bench. Sure, there may be the odd exception, but your 4th 6th and 7th highest paid players should not be consistently riding the bench.

Edit - to be clear, I don't have a problem with them on bench, I have a problem that the team is paying them big bucks and yet they haven't been able to win a job in the starting lineup.

They misspelled Herculez on that spreadsheet. Wonder if there could be other typos as well, of the numerical sort.

Who gives a crap about the specific numbers?

    All that matters:

    1. Fernando points to LA and Chicago and complains the Rapids aren't giving him that kind of money. Because clearly, spending millions is really helping those teams in the win column this year.

    2. The Rapids train and play home in one of the two best soccer facilities in the country. (which also happens to be the second-most expensive)

    3. Fernando's bold statement made just 5 months ago? "No excuses."
