Anyone seen a game at Nellie's yet? Good to see they're on board.

I think EdtheRed (co-captain of the Circles and Squares regiment) reported there were 20 people there last time in the upstairs area. As it's a new place they're still working out the kinks (I've heard service can be a little slow, Summers slow I don't know). There's a nice write up of the place in this week's CityPaper (and they mentioned a DC United group went there for the Toronto game, we'll have to get the owner some SE swag so he can remember our name! ;))

Just a note, Moreno9 our Richmond captain has told me that Penny Lane WILL NOT be open tomorrow so they're looking for a different place down there. As soon as they have it nailed down the update will be posted here.

    yeah it was nice.

    the burgers were good.

but the menu was limited and the staff were really nice.

I don't think they expected us so early.

Me and my asthma might go into DC for this one and support the smoking ban. Is the food at Trusty's any good? Or is it basically the same as the Pour House? I saw the websites are hosted at the same place.

    Re Nellies:

I kind of know the owner, as I met him a few years ago when Nellies was in the planning phase. I joked with him about stealing my idea I had back in the early / mid 90s for a "gay sports bar". Im glad someone had the capital to get it done.

We have been to Nellies twice, and each time it has been great. For those of you who may not know, as mentioned above( not that it matters any at all) Nellies is a gay owned and operated, "gay sports bar". There is a sizeable contingent of gay United/ soccer supporters in the DC area and the groups we have had at Nellies have ranged from 5 to 25. There is a group of us that range from 10 to 45 of us who regularly attend United matches, many who are season ticket holders, and there are far more who come to at least a few matches per game. For the Beckham match, there were about 75, just in our "group". We are working on forming a group for us and our friends, not really as a "spporters club", but more as a means for connections and for socialising. It isnt going to be anything too formal, but we are going to develop a name, logo, and website, and have events such as tonights away viewing, and possibly some tailgating action. Tonight there will be 10-20 of us attending Nellies to watch the game.

Im not sure if anyone here is aware, but the Nationals do a "Night Out" with the Nationals each season, as thier outreach to the gay/lesbian community here in DC. They are the only professional sports organisation that I know of that does this, and it has been a huge success for them. This past july, there were well over 2,500 tickets sold just through group sales specifically for "Night Out". I know one group, Team DC ( the umbrella gay sports organisation) for the Washington Metropolitan Area, sold over 1,100 tickets alone.

Anyway, sorry to get off topic, but I think its very interesting and very cool that Nellies is being received well by the general population, and that they are making attempts to be more than just a "gay" bar. I think this is going to be a great opportunity for all United supporters, and supporters clubs for forge a new relationship with a local bar, and get even more support. Anything to help spread "United" as far and wide as possible is awesome in my book, no matter what. :D

I hope to see many of you at Nellies tonight!

    Vamos United!

I like the veggie burger at Trusty's. Not sure there will be much of a crowd there, I think the Cap Hill peeps will be at Pour House for this one (PH has a decent veggie burger too).

Yeah, were very glad that there is finally an establishment like it. Its definately not your typical gay bar, and I really like the fact that reach out to ALL of the community (meaning everyone), the neighborhood its in, and not just gay men, or gay people period. I dont typically frequent gay bars much, but Nellies has managed to get me out alittle more lately.

So far, we have 10 confirmed for Nellies for tonight, with 5 other possibles.

Enjoy the pour house! Ive been there many m any times, and its definately one of my favourite places to watch United away matches for sure.
