Already making an impact in their first game in the league. RSL is up 2-0 on Kansas City and they have 2 goals and an assist between them. Espindola and Mantilla each with a goal and Morales with an assist. It may be too late for them to make the playoffs this year, but I really like how they've set themselves up moving forward. Lots of young talent. Every time I see one of our teams improving themselves it makes me happy. I can't wait to see what happens this winter with a massive increase in the salary cap and an extra DP added.
You are far too nice to add the R for that Dallas douchebag. Anyone who cares about this game is either there or watching it live. If someone not from KC or SL was actually so jazzed about this game to TiVO it and not want to know the result coming to a soccer message board then they really ought to think about suicide as an alternative to their boring life.
^ you're a moron. I'm pretty impressed with RSL's team these past few games, they've really changed. Even though they lost to chivas, you could still see that they were fighting hard.
There's no guarantee that a 2nd DP slot will be added (I personally doubt it will pass, as the majority of the teams don't even have 1 DP, why would they want to give RBNY and LA another advantage?) and the salary-cap increase isn't a given yet either. I'm sure a small increase is in store, but not as large as earlier speculated. I hope I'm wrong about the salary-cap, but I think it's too early to add a 2nd DP. Wait till 2010
FYI they both played on Sunday against Chivas USA http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20070826&content_id=114014&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp Congratz on tonight, nothing makes me happier than seeing you pass the Galaxy in the standings.
They'll add the second DP. One major reason is Landon Donovan. No freaking way are they going to put LA into the position of having to get rid of him or having to trade for a DP. Everything they traded away would just further crush that team. Another reason is that it will allow Chivas USA to have a spot back. And a third reason is that it will allow teams to trade those spots a lot more easily. If they have two, it will be OK to give up one of them because they'll still have the ability to use one. I'll bet you 1 dollar that they do it starting in 2008. As for the salary cap, it's obviously going up. The only question is how much. The rumors say between 3.5 and 4.2 million. Either one of those would be massive increases for this league. Imagine adding 3 more max salary players per team. That's gonna really help.
It would have to pass a majority of MLS I/O's. NE, DC, CBus, COL, RSL, KC and likely TFC won't vote for a 2nd spot.
I totally agree. The only thing holding the league back from doing these things are the books. So far the DP rule has been an absolute success. Theres no "too much too soon" concerning this other than financial issues.
You know, other than financial issues I would be driving a Maserati! Too many soccer leagues in this country have gone broke because they didn't worry about financial issues. Don't adopt the attitude of most soccer fans around the world.
Why not? I think almost every team in the league will vote for it. They reap the rewards for other teams spending money. It would be silly for any owner to vote against it. I wasn't aware they had an official vote for these things anyway.
Yes - this has to be put to a league vote. Not think it is a anywhere near a done deal. First, some owners are going to very much be against it - Kraft for example. Second, their is a law of diminishing returns. Yes, Beckham was a huge splash but each subsequent splash isn't going to be as large. If you sold out RFK with Beckham - you are still only going to sell out RFK with Beckham and Zidane (yes I know LA has Donovan and Zidane is not coming put I am merely proving a point).
It's kind of a chicken/egg thing. Beckham's brought the revenue and the attention, but LAG is floundering on the field. Blanco is definitely helping Chicago, both with results and attendance, Angel at NY improves the team but the attendance has not noticeably improved, and Denilson at FCD is still an unknown. On the other hand, NE, Houston, KC and DCU are doing just fine in the standings without a DP. And it looks like the Argentines are an instant boost for RSL. The big debate is whether the names will bring in the fans or will the elevated quality of play and winning games bring them in. There is an expensive way to do that (Beckham, Blanco) and a less expensive way (Fred, Emilio, Toja) It's still way too early to determine which is the better way, which is why some teams are biding their time on going after DPs.
You may be right, but with all due respect, why would DC's owners or Kansas City's owners or the Hunts give another team a competitive advantage? AEG only controls 3 teams right now, and they're selling Chicago. This isn't like when AEG owned over half the league.
Why would they want LA to have 2 when they don't even have 1 yet? Remember, it took AEG 2 years to convince the other I/Os to agree to this. As for a massive cap increase all at once...I hope the owners are smart enough to do it in stages. Otherwise, there will be lots of money chasing just the players whose contracts are up. That will cause some real disparities in the pay-performance ratios around the league.
It looks like LA will be the worst team this year. Unless we can continue playing like we did last night against Pachuca.
This was only one game, but hopefully this trio sticks around. Hopefully they understand that the artificial turf is soon to be a thing of the past for RSL. Another thread, but that crap has got to go!
I wonder what enticed the trio to pick RSL; almost makes you wonder if they (or their agents) chose the team with the most Spanish sounding name.
Just wanted to sop in an give Props where props is deserved....You guyz played a great game and I believe you can turn your season around....Beat the LA BECKHAM..on you next match day.
