How incredibly poor has the "Superliga" been handled?

You know.. Im pretty sure they could have got FSC to show the games for free to promote the tournament.. I think FSC wouldn’t mind showing an actual competition over, insert replay number 15 of what ever EPL game was on over the weekend. Instead what you have is MLS trying to make a quick buck and not giving two shits about the availability to 90% of your MLS “hardcore” fan. And by that I mean more than just your average retarded BS poster.. But people who might not have the internet yet might be in a supporters group or what ever.

You know Becks seams to get pretty decent TV ratings, of course this is going to not even budge a 0.1.

Hows about play the tournament at a neutral field in say.. Houston or Dallas. God forbid you have to have LA leave Cali for this tournament.

Quite the contrary actually… Out of all the bitching on BS 99% of which I often despise, this is actually a legitimate rant that’s logical and makes sense to most people who are able to put together a rational thought.

I agree… Beckham is playing, all it would have taken probolly is a talk to ESPN and they most likely would have put the game on. Nah…. MLS probolly wanted money instead of trying to put some legitimacy into the tournament.

Well, country your ********in blessings that you have the internet and will be able to watch the game online if you so chose. And in English… who cares if the quality is garbage J

Not true at all man. So many places don’t have telefutura, and I’m sure there are tons and tons of fans out there who don’t have broadband (which is pretty much required if you want to watch it online) and even more who probably don’t have the internet.

I swear there really is something wrong with the mindset of big soccer posters who think that 100% of people in this country get all these stations and have broadband because they personally do. Common sense is definitely not prevalent on this board.

I wouldn't say "incredibly poor," perhaps "moderately well," as the first-year tournament has been quite a success across the board. Granted I get Telefutura and have broadband, so have not missed any games, but I also saw a few of the games at bars. So yeah, I wanted to see Superliga and had no problems doing so. While there is no English-language broadcast here, Telefutura has been promoting the final quite a bit at all times during the day. :)

11 pm EST? How about 12:30 AM Newfoundland time? How will MLS ever thrive in Canada if they keep neglecting the Newfies?

ianai, your East Coast bias is embarrassing to the rest of us East Coasters.

Even if this were the case, it's not a good idea for two reasons:

    1. MLS is now getting rights fees for their games. By giving up game braodcasts for free, they'd be taking a step back and weakening their future bargaining position the next time they negotiate with FSC or anyone else.

    2. If you gave away the English language broadcasts, it is almost certain that Univision would have paid much less for the Spanish language rights because they'd no longer have an exclusive broadcast. Less money from Univision means less prize money. Less prize money means a much more difficult time getting the Mexican teams to come resulting in less desirable/competative teams participating. And that could lead to a less interesting tournament overall, one that might have died after one year.

I think you seriously overestimate the pentration of FSC. Telefutura is available to tons more homes than FSC. Adding FSC broadcasts wouldn't have really added that many new homes that don't already have access to the game.

And it's worth pointing out that a bunch of people who have FSC don't even watch it -- it often is purchased as part of a bundle with other sports channels in a "sports tier". So, while it's true that many people who get Telefutura probaly aren't watching the game, it's true that many people who get FSC won't do so either.

I think most people who are involved in a supporter group are connected enough to know where/how to find the games on TV. Or know a bar that would show them.

Actually, anyone know the ratings for SuperLiga to date? I don't doubt that they are uninpsiring, but I'd be curious.

You do realize that LA already played one SuperLiga game in Dallas, right?

And the point for having teams host is to prevent poor attendance. If the game were neutral site with only two weeks to sell tickets, do you really think it would have sold that much? It's not like Dallas sold their matches against Mexican squads all that well anyway and that was with the home team playing and months of time to sell tix.

It's not that easy. There are contracts and these things can't be broken. And even if MLS/SUM was willing to try to pay penalties to do so, they have goodwill with their TV partners to consider.

Besides, what if Becks doesn't play? I think ESPN is sick of having "Beckham games" than don't feature the Spice Guy.

Perhaps, but unreasonable, incessant whining certainly is easily found.

Good Morning! I think I should backtrack and correct my stance on this issue. My choice of thread title was terrible, as the SuperLiga has been great. I'm still dumbfounded with regards to the situation with the final, but it wasn't my intention to blast the entire handling of the tourney. Offer as many legitimate reasons for it to be the way it is, and I'll continue to struggle to agree with the handling of the final. Note that one really important word - final. Not first round, second round, consolation - the final.

To those of you who are afforded the opportunity, enjoy the show tonight. Thursday will be a rough day of work waiting to get home and check it out. Hopefully I'll find a good torrent or rebroadcast in decent resolution..otherwise its mlslive..for the final.

Flame away, but I think the tournament has been handled well. Regardless of kick off times and TV coverage the matches have been well played and well attended, which is the purpose of the whole thing. Now, the extra crap like bringing in new fans has not been handled extremely well...but that is not the point of the tournament. Besides that, do you really think LA playing against a team with a name most americans cant even pronounce would rate much better or stir up conversation at work if was on at 7 instead of 11? I seriously doubt it. As for the attendance cap, it was a trade off. Have 12k fans watch a championship match at a SSS or have 30k watch the match on a field with american football lines painted on it. Honestly, showing the "new fans" that do watch the game on TV what a futbol pitch looks like makes more sense to me than having their ADD brains distracted by the NFL lines on the field. It also makes sense to honor the knowledgable fans by not making us watch a championship match played on an NFL field.
There were some tough decisions made about this tournament early on, but for the most part I think the organizers got it right. SSS pitch vs NFL pitch and they made the right choice. ESPN for free or Univision for money...money is always good. Hell, even the teams they picked turned out to provide some good matches...and the "worst" team made the finals. My question to those of you that think it was handled poorly is this: Will you watch the tournament next year? If your answer is yes, then it was handled right. If your answer is no then I applaud you and suggest you take advantage of our capitalist system and stick by your word. Don't watch any matches next year and maybe the organizers will change things in an effort to earn your business. Superliga is by no means perfect, but for a first try they got a lot more right than they got wrong.

I'm not trying to sound like an absolutely jerk here so please don't take this comment as overly insulting but, do people on these threads simply not think before they make a comment?

Read the quote here. "I Just wish Dallas or D.C. United were in the final instead of la. Right now this is looking like a crazt mismatch"

And D.C. and Dallas would be doing any better tonight?

If memory serves, we cleaned D.C.'s clock 2 nill in our superliga game against them. And scored, what? 4 goals in 15 minutes again dallas?

Don't forget, this is a tournament not regular season. And though the regular season is more important, they are completely seperate competitions.

LAG sucks this year in regular season matches but we are doing absolutely wonderful in the superliga.

Never make comments about teams and future outcomes without doing your homework. Neither of those teams stood an f'n chance against LAG in superliga, both games were mismatches.

Dallas starting coming back in the game only because we dropped our defense to score another 2-3 goals in the second half.

As for D.C. well, Cannon's cleansheet in that game should speak for itself.

We're the most qualified U.S. team in our league for this final like our season's standings or not.

I totally disagree with the premise of this thread. The Superliga has been great. I have not watched one bad game in the tourney.

Sure I would love to see the games carried in English on FSC or GOL, but that may well come next year.

I don't believe that MLS expected the LA Galaxy to be quite the shit sandwich that they were, but I suppose that they had assumed that Lalas wouldn't have traded away every asset on the team that wasn't injured, English or balding.

Relax man, this is kind of a throw away year...

Next year teams will actually have to qualify and earn their spot in it. This year they can just iron out tt he kinks.

LA certainly "has a chance". It's soccer and good teams can lose to inferior ones due to the low scoring nature. With Cannon, it's possible that LA could hold Pachuca's scoring down and then they just need to get lucky. And, hey, it's easy to point out that Pachuca has already lost to LA in this same tournament.

but, no, I don't give the Galaxy much hope.

Cannon's only skill is picking the ball out of the net. How many goals have the Galaxy allowed in the past few games? Thirteen. Thirteen goals conceded in five matches.

Well, for all my complaining I couldn't stay away. I ended up upgrading my Dish Network package to get the channel, and stayed up passed 2am watching the match. Do I regret it - Hell no! What a match. I still find, and will always find the handling of the final to be absurd, and really wish it had been more in the public eye as if ever there was a match that might have collected a few new fans of the beautiful game, this was it, but whatever, the match justified my groggyness today and my $120 annual increase in TV expenses.:)
