My brother and I were watching Sevilla vs Getafe this weekend on GolTv and Antonio Puerta collapsed on the pitch and was immediately attended to and then walked off the pitch. He later collapsed in the locker room and was taken to the hospital. It was later reported during the match that he suffered a heart attack. He passed away. It's pretty strange hearing about this after seeing it happen on TV. After seeing him able to walk off on his own I hoped it wasn't anything serious, then I read that he'd had a heart attack on the field, and now this. It's a tragic and kind of scary situation.
Yet more tragic news after the deaths of two young English players last week. According to reports his wife is also expecting a baby. And with him walking off the pitch it seemed as if he would be OK. No age to die. Awful, awful news. R.I.P. Antonio Puerta
goes to show you when it's your time it's your time-I've seen people sky dive and their chutes not open and survive and fat guys who smoke live into their '70's. On the other hand-there was a 5 year girl in my church who drowned last week and now this. I actually take some comfort in knowing that there seems to be a deliberate plan to when each of us leave this place I just hope I have some more time-just another reminder for each us to live life day to day.
This reminds me of the Confederation's Cup in 2003 I believe when a Cameroonian player (Marc Vivien Foe) collapsed on the pitch and died in the middle of the game. What was really disturbing is that he literally died on international TV. The trainers came out and he was unconscious but the TV cameras didn't realize it was serious and focused in on the injured player as they normally do. As they took him off the pitch, the trainers were literally running with the stretcher as the player lied on the stretcher barely staying on...a very disturbing image. Rest in peace Sr. Puerta.
Didn't an umpire die at an Astros game a few years ago? We were watching the game on TV but I don't remember his name. He just collapsed behind the plate and never got up again.
Marc Vivien Foé did indeed die from heart failure, He collapsed in the centre circle on the pitch in June 2003 when Cameroon were playing Colombia, and died later in hospital. I remember watching the final between France and Cameroon, a match played with no will to win. And when Marcel Desailly held the cup, after France had won, he held it not in the traditional manner of holding the cup high, but together with Cameroon captain Rigobert Song. That whole match was moving from start to finish. His club, Manchester City retired his shirt number, 23, in his honour - something which I realise is done in US sport but is virtually unheard of in England and it was a huge thing for them to do. There is a memorial to him at the stadium and in the players tunnel there is a plaque with his name.
I always hear heart attack-but I wonder if they are really blood clots...they guys can't have thinning arteries at 30 with all the running they are doing. When John Ritter died-everyone just said heart attack-when in reality a coronary artery had ripped open and he bled to death. Regardless-still a shame.
I'm not 100% sure about this but I think a heart attack just means that the heart stopped working due to a lack of blood supply. It doesn't have to be due to a clogging or thinning of the artery. It can also be caused by a natural rupture or something of that nature. In Foe's case, it was a congenital defect that caused his artery walls to be thinner than normal (I think). I don't know what the cause of Puerta's was but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like that.

I was actually watching the game when it happened and he swallowed his tounge. I figured he was ok afterwards seeing as how he walked off and he got some of his color back. I was shocked, I saw it on the TV while my supervisor was trying to talk to me...it really sucked.
