Big names steal the show
Hamm, Foudy fail to score; Welsh leads Freedom to 2-1 Fame Game victory

Welsh scored twice in a 30-second span during the second half of the Washington Freedom’s 2-1 exhibition victory over the Connecticut Reds on an overcast, muggy Sunday afternoon at At-A-Glance Field.

With a bounce in her step and an ever-present smile, Foudy did just about everything right, except score. She and Reds teammate Roberts controlled the pace on the majority of Connecticut’s possessions, which became hampered when Washington slipped a 12th player onto the field during a mass substitution.

Seven members from the 1986 U.S. Women’s National Team entered the game at the time, two for the Reds and five for the Freedom, who pulled just four players off. The referees were made aware of the miscue but allowed play to continue without penalty.

Sounds like it! It appears they kicked a ball around in between signing autographs. It's cool though, those two earned it!

FREEDOM DEFEAT CT REDS 2-1 IN HALL OF FAME GAME

The Washington Freedom with guest players Mia Hamm, Carla Overbeck as well as 1986 Women's national Team honorees Emily Pickering, Lisa Gmitter, Suzy Cobb Germain and Janine Szpara defeated the Soccer Plus Connecticut Reds 2-1. The game was played at the US National Soccer Hall of Fame following the 2007 Induction of Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Bobby Smith and Alan Rothenberg in front of a sold out crowd of 3000. Former US Women's National team coach Tony DiCicco coaches the WPSL Reds and were bolstered by guest players Julie Foudy, Tiffany Roberts with 1986 USWNT honorees Stacey Enos and Betsy Drambour.

Mia, Julie, Carla and Tiffany all entered the match in the 15th minute. All the other guest players played the final 15 minutes of the first half. The score at halftime was 0-0. Both teams created 3 or 4 good scoring opportunities but could not find the target.

The second half saw the Freedom come out with the same starting lineup and quickly score two goals in the first 5 min. Christie Welsh opened the scoring when she quickly turned on a loose ball just inside the penalty area and fired a hard shot into the lower corner of the goal. Two minutes later, Welsh beat an onrushing Reds goalkeeper Emily Shaw, lobbed a bouncing through ball over her head and finished to make the score 2-0. The Freedom defense held firm until the 89th minute when Kylee Litchfield beat Freedom keeper Lauren Church to a cross and bravely scored to make it 2-1.

My Family attended the weekend... The game was pure fun, until Mia and Julie left, then the game became fun to watch. Just a bunch of players enjoying playing together.. some pics... and a description of the game... Freedom goalie got hurt on the Reds goal in the 2nd half...
