could Coleman look to MLS for Real Sociedad?

I know Coleman had a reputation of plucking a few players from the MLS to EPL. Even calling McBride one of the best Premiership signings.

I was curious what others thought of the potential for Coleman to look again to MLS for a good deal or will they stick to the tradition of signing mostly Basque players?

if so who would be a good fit? If Szetela signs with Roma could that loan make sense?

Real Sociedad is basically near broke....they have no money for bringing in Yanks, even at our cut-rate costs. Besides Basques barely can stand Castilians, never mind we pond crossers

Not that I hear of...Benfica was a few years ago, Adu's current club.

Yeah, they were after him, and they could've used him. They've started the season off losing 2-0. I hate to see this, because they really should be in La Liga, not Segunda. Their membership has dwindled, costing them a lot of money.

If they can bring in Coleman, they are probably open to bringing in anyone to return them to La Liga.

coleman was recommended by john toshack, former real sociedad coach. so far he's brought over one player from the u.k. to play in san sebastian. can't remember who it was though.

I read an interview with Coleman, in Spain, last week. He was saying that the player he had brought in, which cost I think 300,000 pounds, already reached the limit of his budget. The team was even not allowed by its owner to use airflight to get to distant venues, but would have to bus all over the country for away matches.
I don't think they would bring a Yank, then, unless it was a very good player who would agree to low wages just to get Euro exposure. A loan deal for Johnson might have been good for Eddie, but he seems to be as timid on these things as landon is/was.?

Well the only player I would suggest for Coleman to go after really hard for the La Liga 2 is Justin Mapp, and maybe Eddie Johnson.

They need a free transfer US Latino ... when does Arturo Alvarez's contract expire?

Not that I think Cookie is a good choice of a coach.

Maybe Arturo can go to Alaves where money is plenty.

I bet he could get someone on a free......Danny Szetela is the only option right now. I dont think he would go for that though.

Do you mind if I ask from where it is you get this get this idea?

The reason I ask is because, in my experience, this statement is far from true. In fact, I've found it to be quite the opposite.

Having spent time in five of the seven traditional Basque Provinces (Spain and France), I was always treated very well, and especially so after it became known that I was an American. This includes San Sebastian/Donostia, home of Real Sociedad.

I guess you could say that I'm calling bullshit.

Sinko, I think you are both right.

I absolutely love Spain, and in every region, the people I have met have been wonderful.

However, when it comes to their regional identification, it is extremely strong -- hence ETA and the Basque and Castillian desire to become autonomous.

Read this on canteras. You'll see that, until recently, Real Sociedad had a policy of being a locals-only club.

Go back and read what I bolded. I was specifically speaking on the Basques' feelings toward Americans. Neither ETA nor Castillians have anything to do with that, and neither does the former basque-only policy of Real Sociedad.

With the strict limit on foreign players its unlikely to see them going after a yank. Spain will be a tough league for Americans to get into unless they gain citizenship or something.

Are there different limitations in Spain than in other Euro countries?

The only person I see right now that might go to Spain is Justin Mapp. Maybe Eddie Johnson if he chooses Spain, and not England most likely place he would go play at.

THe player was Crewe Alexandra's Welsh international defender David Vaughan, who is total pants. I very much doubt that anyone will be joining them from MLS, as has been said they are totally broke, and their fans don't even like the idea of a non-Basque manager. A couple of frees aside the Vaughan deal was the only one.
