I came across this on the Wizards board and figured I would see what everyone thought.

    MLS Expansion Draft Rules:
    - Each team may protect 11 players from its 28-man roster (Senior and Developmental rosters combined).
    - Generation adidas players are automatically protected. (Players in this category who are "graduated" to the Senior Roster at the end of the 2006 season are not automatically protected.)
    - Teams may make available no more than one Senior International player.
    - San Jose Earthquakes may select no more than one player from any given MLS team.
    - San Jose Earthquakes will make a total of 10 selections.
    - A player who retires will not be considered part of the Senior Roster and therefore is not eligible for the draft and does not need to be protected.

Is the Designated Player included in the protected 11?

I'd hope to God so, or else that would be the dumbest thing MLS would have ever done.

    Let's see:

    Rolfe
    Robinson
    Mapp
    Wanchope
    Blanco
    Conde
    Segares
    Pickens
    Brown
    Barrett

    That's just an opinion.

Good list, but that's only 10. I'd add Guerrero. I might do Sumare instead of CJ. CJ is long in the tooth, and therefore holds a little less value for us as well as San Jose.

Yeah, it was off the top of my head, and I didn't count before I posted. I agree with both of your revisions. I forgot about both players, and I didn't really even want to put Brown on my list.

Is Soumare Generation Adidas and thus automatically protected?

My opinion would be Brown for Soumare, but if Bakary has to be on there, then I'm in agreement with what was already listed.

    Rolfe
    Mapp
    Blanco
    Wanchope
    Segares
    Guerrero
    Conde
    Robinson
    Pickens
    Barrett
    Soumare

I'm liking the fact that all the talk about who just misses the list is Brown, and nobody(so far) has said anything about Diego.

I assume Chad Barrett will be graduated from Gen Addidas and need to be protected if you want him. Not sure if Bakary is Gen Ad. or not.

I have selected 9 players to protect, leaving 2 spots open. I wouldn't be suprised to see Carr and Barrett protected.

Earthquakes nomads in the Bay Area

Sounds like a nice match. He certainly is fan friendly - off the field (not a lot of love for him on the pitch in this crowd), but he always is around to sign autographs and has been pleasant to all I've talked to that have met him. An expansion team should enjoy a young player that is willing to work the crowds and is a local. My daughter will be crushed to see him go.

I'm a huge fan of Justin Mapp. But I recall hearing that his contract is up at the end of this year. Is that true? He's talked repeatedly of wanting to go to Europe. What are the chances that we protect him, and he leaves next spring anyway.

I know - it's the Jaqua story all over again...

I would keep Thiago till the end of the season, leave him unprotected and hope that SJ takes him if not then cut him.

I don't think that's an option do to SI limits. Unless Sega's status changes and we're able to put another player (Mapp maybe?) on the season-ending injury list.

Of course I'm speculating that this is even possible.

We've got to make room for Conde. That's happening for certain.

WOuld A good europe team take a player that already missed about half the games and got injuried again? He needs to have a break out season next year to move.

He ought to take the next 5-7 weeks and get a railpass. He could cover a lot of ground in Europe, even on crutches. Then, he should come back and renew with MLS for about 50K/yr plus meaningful per game incentives should he suddenly find a way to remain healthy. Just one mans opinion

I think we should just leave Nate Jaqua unprotected again.

I was thinking the same thing about Carr. I know he's from the Bay Area, and even though he (along with Barrett) gets killed on these boards on a regular basis, I've heard nothing but good things about him as a person. I even have a client at my work who is buddies with him from back in Cali, he says Calen is a super-cool guy. So even though I might be inclined to keep him just because of his youth, and alot of our star players are older or injury-prone, Carr might request to be unprotected so he can have a shot at playing for his hometown team.

Cant see him going overseas hes always hurt and inconsistent. How many good games has he had this yr? 1 for the Nats and 1 for the Fire? I believe Pickens is a free agent this year hell probably go to Norway to cash out.

Barrett? Soumare?.....I just dont see what you guys see.

They're Generation Adidas and thus automatically protected (unless Barrett will be/has graduated, I'm not sure if his status in the program has been confirmed yet). That's the only reason I included them in my previous post.

I'm willing to bet that Pickens is resigned by the Fire if he is a free agent. Sourmare is a rookie who is very raw with potential (who was a high first round draft pick) he's not going to be left in the wind. Is he even eligible?

Barrett is another story. He stands a chance at being unprotected.

I know - you'll all say it's not worth the risk. But, I'm curious whether San Jose would take Wanchope and his $400k salary if he were left unprotected. Just curious mind you. He hasn't shown me yet that he's a class better than the rest of MLS strikers at less cost.

Not suggesting we should give up on him after 3 games. I'm just wondering whether he will show the league by that time that he's worth the extra money. In which case, San Jose might decide to look for a younger player for less.

In other words, his price tag and age might "protect" him if the club doesn't.

I myself would be frustrated and sad to see him go. Carr has big fans here, and some definite detractors. Unbelievably positive with us at the park, including when all the guys are exhausted but he stays. I think his field play is fine and even finer since our coaching change. It looks to me like people don't easily give up their preconceptions here, especially the 7 or 8 who seem to dominate this site. The negative stuff about Blanco and the blind faith in a few others as our saviors, who turn out not to be, said it all. We need this new blood that is coming to these dialogues. Only way this is going to be worth the trouble. Let's move on. We've got some great games to watch things unfold. Go FIRE!

Looks to me like Carr gets killed less and less on those. He's young and learning. I could also see why he would want to go from here. But with his talent looking better and better, I sure think he'd be missed. I have more trouble figuring out Barrett, but I think the evidence will be in on him in the next few games. Depends on who gets a chance to perform because they both can do it, especially with the support of Blanco.
