He would actually be a great target for a number of reasons. I have often said that we should go after players immediately after Euro and WC tournaments. Get the ones who are not old but are probably at a point where they would consider retiring from international ball. Primarily, my thought was that they would have difficulty getting called in for national team games from MLS. Now, one player is actually doing it AND schevchenko is the type that would have a lot more leverage with his federation than some. I think he could come to MLS and write his own terms for continuing to play for the Ukraine.
you know the wives have a lot to do with the desicion making....so I wouldnt say that it is all that unlikely.... I am actually surprised why many big stars dont want to come to the U.S. Like Denilson said earlier today...It is a great place to live and work. I mean the MLS has to start selling the U.S to theses Stars.... Once there is a team in Miami..I bet , it would be a great incentive for signing....
The problem isn't his willingness to come, its his price. Milan recently tried to make a bid to get him back, but their billionaire owner though Chelsea's asking price was too high. There's no way MLS can afford him until his contract expires in 2010
I cant see him signing for at least 2-3 years for the MLS, A previous reply couldnt understand why most big FOOTBALL stars wont go to America. I think the reason for this is the USA is only just signing on to the idea of football and the quality is not what you find elsewhere in the world. Dont get me wrong I'm not putting it down, I just watched my first MLS match and it was ok, but with 9 goals scored I'm thinking to myself these guys have some serious defensive work to do. But I can see in a few years time American "FOOTBALL" (sorry I cant bring myself to say soccer) will be able to compete on the world stage, both domestic and national...
Oh god let this be true! The rich get richer! Fred, Emilio, Schevchenko for Dyachenko! Oh well i guess NY can be happy with Angel and Ronaldo. A google news search produces this: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&c...&hs=3ZP&q="shevchenko"+"MLS"&um=1&sa=N&tab=wn http://www.google.com/search?tab=nw...lla:en-US:official&q="shevchenko" "dc united"
A) DCU's owners have money, too. This team isn't the poor stepchild of MLS and the owners seem willing to spend money. If they think he'll bring a decent ROI, I can see them making this happen. B) I would be surprised if it happened next year as Shevchenko is still a tad young for coming over here. He can still play for an elite, CL-level team. C) NEVER underestimate the wishes of the wife. If she really wants to come back to the US, that can be a huge, huge factor. They are already set for life financially so it's not like she thinks they have to stay in Europe to get paid. D) I love the fact that Shevchenko wouldn't count as an SI because of the wife. Usually when these big signings are made the Yank at the end of bench is safe but a move like this and suddeny Justin Moose is getting a little nervous.
So i know this is all rumor but with Gomez and Moreno likely gone next year does anyone want to speculate on formations? Keep in mind Veron may still be coming too.
This rumor could be very true, although I was reading somewhere that other places were also persuing him. Colorado was one of those teams, along with DC and NYRB. Hopefully he comes to Colorado, but Id like to see him in the league regardless of the team...
Stepping away from this rumor, if MLS grows to where it can afford a bunch of star players while they are still near their prime, I would think it would work much better for South Americans than Europeans if the players want to remain on their national teams.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Shevchenko wearing black and red, but like others have said, his transfer fee will likely be quite high, and I don't think MacFarlane and Chang would make that kind of investment while we still call RFK home without ground broken on our SSS. Now, if we were to break ground on our stadium by the winter transfer window... well maybe then I'd be a bit more optimistic. I think it's much more likely that United brings in Veron this winter. If the 2nd DP slot comes to fruition, I could see United making the move for Shevchenko in the summer, IF we've got the stadium plans set.
I would kill myself if he played for DC. We'd get owned even worse than we already are in the Atlantic Cup.
I think the DCU owners should build their own damn stadium first before going after high price Euro players. I heard it from Jimmy Conrad that when, he played in the Allstar game, the man reeked of body odor so bad, Conrad stopped marking him.
How big of a football fan can you be if you judge a whole league from one game? Or are you just stupid?
Hey take it easy dude he was just making an observation and a fair one at that. We should be happy that MLS is gaining more exposure overseas
