A "weighted lottery," emphasis on the "weighted."

...Not that I really mind; like it or not, LA is going to be the face of the league most of the time for the next couple of years, and I'd rather see them halfway decent if they're going to be examples of the league.

They've pretty much ceased even trying to hide how things are done.

C'mon. That's b.s. Why not give the galaxy an automatic berth in the mls cup while they are at it since they are the "face" of mls. By most people's arguments it would be the right thing to do since it would guarantee higher ratings and more corporate sponsorship opportunties. Appearently, that seems to be what's "really" important

I think the LA Galaxy should just be annointed MLS Cup Champs for the next five years right now. That way we'll have plenty of time to market it and the league will save a lot of money not having to play all the games...

Clearly MLS is trying to make LA and Columbus the faces of the league. Because Columbus won the previous two lotteries.

It's clearly what's going on.

Right, we totally rigged this lottery so we could get a 16 year old forward. Woo hoo, we're saved. Now we'll totally rip up the league.

If any of you twits think that this was rigged to help the Galaxy, you are just sad. With our current FO, they'll probably trade him to RSL so we can use Eddie Pope for the rest of the season.

yes, it's stunning that the galaxy won it...from goffblog http://blog.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2007/08/lottery_lowdown.html

"Using a special formula that improves the chances of the league's weaker teams over the past year of winning the lottery, here are the percentages:

    RSL 22.5% chance of winning
    L.A. 18.8
    Colorado 15.4
    Chicago 12.4
    Kansas City 9.7
    New York 7.4
    Chivas 5.4
    D.C. 3.7
    Dallas 2.3
    Houston 1.3
    New England 0.7
(Columbus, which won the Robbie Rogers lottery in the spring, and expansion Toronto will not participate)"

so, the team with the 2nd highest chance won it...ooh, conspiracy

I think we should post this every few hours as long as conspiracy theories are flying. If LAG had been down in the New England-Chivas realm, you could perhaps question it. But in fact, LAG won because they have been consistently craptastic and therefore were one of the two most likely victors.

I sure hope LA can get a couple more DP... I'd like to see them get a couple of stars, so they have a shot at the playoffs... next year..

Guys, aside from the fact that LA's suckiness of late makes it no surprise that they won the lottery, this isn't worth getting worked up about because odds are this isn't a player that will make much of a difference.

OK, Sesay MIGHT become really good. Odds are he'll be decent. But he might be as irrelevant as David Arvizu or Nelson Akwari. But, if today I had to bet whether he'd be closer to Altidore than Arvizu, I'd place a bet on Arvizu.

Is another David Arvizu worth getting all Area 51 about?

Well considering that we don't know how either of those players is going to turn out, but Jozy looks like he could be shaping up to be the best US forward ever, I don't think your comparison says much.

    1. Sesay is a reserve for the U17 team. Goff said before the lottery that he's a nice player with potential but very, very raw.

To put this in perspective. Bryan Arguez was a STARTER for the U17s and made the U20 team at 16 and he has yet to play a second for DC United this season. Sesay could turn out to be a very good player (very hard to project with youth). But it won't be this year or next.

    2. It's bad that he went to such an instable team. Figure that at least half if not 3/4ths of the LAG roster turns over this offseason. Figure a new coach and new GM. There's a substantial chance that Sesay would be viewed as an inherited player who can't contribute right now by the new coach. Not an ideal situation for a youth player to be in.

My personal belief is that Lalas entered this lotto b/c he hoped he could trade Sesay for something. Probably not a lot but right now, LAG could use anything they could get. Kotschau, Jim Curtin--either would be a big step up for them.
