"The Revolution considered signing Brazilian midfielder Denilson, but were unwilling to pay a high price, according to coach Steve Nicol. Instead, the Revolution are on the verge of adding defender Dusan Petkovic."

    As succinct as it gets.

    That's just depressing right there.

So are we to assume that goes for any player with credentials like his? Really gives us something to look forward to. Dusan, Dusan, Dusan :(

I'm sometimes as annoyed about the lack of signings too but in this case, what has Denilson done lately? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I'm really not sure. I know he's been playing in Saudia Arabia. What kind of competition level is that?
If you read the Red bullsh*t boards after last night's game, many are lamenting over the price tags a few of their players are getting, namely Reyna. Is Denilson the same player he was when he was 19 in the world cup?

You know, this is a somewhat valid complaint.

Why this is upsetting as a Revolution fan is that I believe you could replace Denilson with just about any player in the world who merits more than $350,000/year.

Denilson, as I recall, is very left-footed, which is a thing we could use. But, I'm with the doubters on this one. Players his age don't go to Saudi Arabia unless they've given up and just wanna get paid. No disrespect to the Saudi league, but seriously...what Euro-based players go there? Only the old timers looking for a last big pay day.

Denilson is 29. What does that say?

Having said that, I'm not thrilled about Dusan Petkovic, but we're top of the league, so...

Is the amount FCD paid for Denilson known?

Do we know what we offered Petkovic?

Does money remain to acquire an attacking player or did we just shoot our meager wad?

Denilson is FC Dallas's DP so we know he's getting paid over $350,000 before bonuses and what not.

I'm actually with the doubters. I'm going to have to wait and see him play before I give him much credit at this point.

The Revs really are just a team without serious flaws.

But for your sake, I wish they would suck it up and spend real money on a DP. A great attacking midfielder to pair with Shalrie would bring a deserved MLS Cup.

How could we have done that already what with the Dempsey money and being so far under cap? Apparently the Rev's have money they just don't want to spend it.

The post mortem on the DP rule will be interesting in the off season. So far it seems that some players have been able to come in mid-season and have an impact. I have my doubts that that can work the same way for the Revs. Perhaps this is just memories of bad late season additions in the past, but the Revs seem to be a team that works off of chemistry making it hard to add someone new to the mix. Perhaps the effect of this is minimized by the addition being a defender and the back line being a bit of revolving door this season.

Actually Denilson is making over 400K as he is Dallas' first DP (400K for first DP, 350K for second DP).

And the point remains valid, a player out of contract who played the last 2 years in Saudi Arabia, he must be here for a pay day. As some of you said before (channeling Mario Sosa comments), if he's out of contract, how good can he be?

I could be mistaken, but isn't it only 200K this year because of the timing of his arrival? I think I heard that in reference to Blanco.

You are right, because it's half a year it's prorated. Dallas has to pay half of his contract (I'm assuming it's more then a 6 month deal) but has to pay the full $400K against the cap next season.

I am not in any way supporting the miserly nature of the Revs FO, but I wouldnt give Denilson any kind of big money either.

Based on the comments of Nicol in the first article, it really sounds like we didn't end up with either of the Gambian fellas. I say that because he talks seriously about signing Dusan, but says nothing about either of the U20 guys. Maybe they're just not worth mentioning.

Either way, It would just be nice to hear how the story played out.

We didn't sign someone that we'd been talking about signing? What a shock!

I'm just going to start making up player rumors for the hell of it, because they'll go as far as the real rumors do.

My sources tell me the Revs are close to signing a 7'1" Ukranian striker, all that's left is the work permit.

Not sure if anyone else caught this, but apparently the playoff format isnt quite what we thought it was, at least in this forum. If(as if its not going to happen) there's more eastern teams than western teams in the playoffs, the last eastern team(columbus) would go to the Western bracket and play as if they were in the west. So no NE-DC or NE-NY final is going to happen.

That's been noted on the Other Games thread. But DC or NY is still possible. As long as they finish fifth in the East. :)

As much as I'd love to see DC plummet to 5th place...It aint gonna happen.

The only thing better than beating DCU at RFK in the Conference Finals would be beating them at RFK in MLS Cup!:D

A very close second would be the SE having to hand us the Supporters Shield!

    :D

Perhaps we should start a thread on who will win the Shield. Our next match with DCU will be a huge factor in determining this.

Also, re: the Dallas signing of Denilson, a very good team just got better, possibly significantly better. This is bad news both for the Shield and for the USOC, as Dallas seems our likely opponent if we make it to the final.

Other Boston teams (Pats, Sox, Celtics, at least this year) seem to understand that when you're close to a title, you have to spend. The Krafts as owners of the Revs don't seem to get this, which is puzzling since the Krafts as owners of the Pats do.

You could really apply this to just about anything concerning the Pats and Revs.
