Not sure why one would be insanely angry, it simply shows the goals.

I did like the point that Conway committed a "hand ball" on the back pass. I suppose it is piling on to show a red card after an own goal. But it does raise the question for me if this is addressed in the Laws of the Game, i.e. can the referee use discretion here?

unfortunately, we've dealt with this once before (last season, another bad backpass by defense) where conway had to commit a handball in the box to save a goal. it results in a direct kick (not PK) with a wall, giving the keeper a better chance of saving it than he would have had trying to save the errant ball in the first place. it doesn't result in a red card. it's a sad, sad story that i know this.:(

Handling the ball on a pass back from a teammate is an INDIRECT free kick, any DIRECT free kick awarded in the penalty area is automatically a PK as per the LOTG. It would not be a sending off offense as there was no obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Thanks for the clarifications. So there is no FK because of the goal, correct?

Right, you let the goal stand, since it was an infraction by the defending team no need for a free kick.

I am actually talking about the bad announcing and the fact that he is pretty much making things up. Saying that christman dived and that missing the penalty was retribution for diving. He just goes on thoughout the highlights and it got me really angry

As i said in the post game thread, those guys sucked. When whoever it was got hit in the balls for NYRB the announcer, even after the replay were it flies into his groin, was talking about how its lucky there was no call for a hand ball. Meanwhile the guy is rolling around on the ground in pain.... maybe he broke a finger and i just saw it wrong.

I didn't watch the full highlights until just now (I had watched the 1 minute version on the front page). Yeah, the commentary is annoying, but the video kept freezing so I couldn't assess whether there was any merit to the diving accusation (though given that it is Cristman we're talking about I doubt it). The ultimate homerism of the highlights was the suggestion that Conway got his foot stuck in the artificial turf

Nicol was quoted in today's Globe that if the PK wasn't called, they weren't going to cry about it. They knew it was soft.

I actually agree with this. In a way, it's a good thing he missed the PK. I didn't want the RBNY fans complaining about losing that way. This is much better. :D

The worst part of the highlights was the editors fault. They cut Jozy's offside goal so that there was no indication in the clip that it was actually offside. If the scoreboard wasn't there one might think the match had ended 2-2.

I watched the game on MLS Direct and they were the feed for that. They are extremely annoying, but I guess Johnny Most was extremely annoying to non-Celtics fans, so I don't get too bent out of shape about it. While I agree that Christman didn't dive, I also agree that the call was soft. They didn't make that differentiation. Perhaps they've been warned about going after the referee and so just focus on the opposing players.

I have still not seen a clip that show exactly what happened to Conway on that goal. Where was he when the pass was originally made and what was he paying attention too? He must have been moving towards the sideline so as to make a pass back to him not on goal, but it's not clear on any of the replays I've seen how that happened really.

He could have been focused on Cristman who was charging in pretty fast, at least that's the way it looked from the fort.

I taped the game and looked at the own goal again. I think Conway moved to his left so that he could then step to his right to kick the ball. As the shifter to the right, he tripped and fell, so he reached out with his hand to try to stop the ball. Cristman was still too far away to cause any panic, in my view.

That's how I saw it too. It looked like he came out tothe left of the goal (his left) expecting the pass to be to that side but he pass was to his left and on net. When he tried to get back to it he caught his studs and was off balance.

I really hated the two different shots by NYRB that hit the side netting. You then saw a RB player celebrating a goal, then it cuts away. I had thought for a moment each time that it had been a goal.
