When playing a team like NY with strong forwards, we really need more defense from outside midfielders than Khano can provide. He spent way too much time uninvolved with the play and was much too slow to shift into defense.

JPA dropped back to help Reyna for a while, then they resorted to lobbing balls over the middle. Their best play - as usual - came from playing balls to forwards on the wing who then beat the wing (KS), and attack across the 18. When that broke down, they had nothing. Reis was a giant - the real man of the match. AJ was also tremendous. This was probably the best game of the year for both Riley and Thompson. Given how completely invisible Dorman was for most of the game, I wonder if he won't be the one sitting when Noonan and Petkovic appear. Twellman scored well, but otherwise was useless. How many times did he foul up the attack because he was late getting back onside? Why does he always hold up the play when he has space to attack? He looks like he has an acute case of Baba's disease. Unfortunately, the only replay that will be shown - over and over - will be the Mendes strike from 25 yards. Why can't we get players like that? Hats off to the Riders, and their great songs, esp. at the end. "You came all this way just to see them lose, cause Red Bulls are a super club!" Excellent!

Re: [R] Revs - RBNY In/Post Game The MSG announcers were horrible. In fact the audio in general was bad. I didnt here a whistle literally the whole game, or any fan noise. The announcers were wrong on almost every call. I dont mind if an announcer gets something wrong, but when they show a replay of what happened, and the call is obviosuly right by the ref, but they still stick with what they thought they saw even when theres no argument by the players. MSG directing and camera work was spot on however, and the best ive seen of an MLS game all season.

Twellman played great I thought - overall pretty much everyone played well - except Khano Smith, was glad to see him subbed out. On the goal I think Avery John was the one running with Altidore, then I think Parkhurst is supposed to pick him up and doesn't react quick enough. But both had good games otherwise - Angel had to drop into the midfield to get any touches.
Re: [R] Revs - RBNY In/Post Game They also referred to "Jared" Larentowicz, "Sha-la-rie" Joseph, and botched Matt Reis' name too but I forget how. Referred to Altidore as the "lone goal scorer" in a 1-1 game, said Twellman's goal came off a NYRB corner kick (it was a Reis goal kick), etc.

Clearly that doesn't mean he (or AJ) couldn't play on the right, but either would seem to be out of position. Don't get me wrong. I like Dorman. It's just that he seems a little lost to me currently. For the attacking mid, the attack has never really flowed through him. Now he seems to get fewer touches than ever. When was his last goal? Wasn't it against Red Cows back in June/July? Last night it was Joseph making penetrating runs, while Dorman is doing this Noonan-like lurking around the 18. It just seems that as JL has grown into his position, AD's sense of his role has gotten fuzzy.

Re: [R] Revs - RBNY In/Post Game I thought we were fortunate to get 3 points. We controlled the midfield, but we weren't dangerous at all in the attacking third. I thought Cristman spent too much time falling down, and I think someone should limit Wells' sugar intake. I thought Dorman did fairly well, and Riley & John played good matches. Larentowicz & Joseph were superb. Reis saved us on a few occasions. Ralston didn't look sharp but was okay.
We got lucky last night to get three points - we'll take them. The team played well in spots, but still not consistent enough for my taste. It is interesting to see that when teams play the ball quickly, one or two touch soccer, you can really see that the other team has trouble keeping shape to defend the ball. I wish we did it more consistently. On the NYRB goal, I had AJ actually taking a break as Altidore did a give and go and AJ didn't follow him. Parkhurst was actually already out wide protecting the flank and didn't recover in time. Not sure which of them was at 'fault' on that, but I wouldn't hold AJ blameless on it. The answer, IMHO, is easy about who sits when Noonan comes back: Christman. It's been like that all season, why would it change now? As far as Petkovic is concerned, once we know where he is going to play, that question might be easier. If we stay with a 3-5-2 then Khano would be the one to sit. If we go to a 4-4-2 with Petkovic in Central D, then Andy might be the odd man out, but I would still go with sitting Khano and slotting Andy out wide (switching Ralston to left mid.) Congratulations team, that was a great win. The game against DC on the 9th now has VERY significant meaning. Anything less than a win puts in jeopardy of losing the conference title.
This was obviously a lucky win, but the three point going into the much needed off-week will surely help us. Matt Reis must have read my pre-game post. He came up big when the NYRB sprang a counter attack. The goal he let in was a defensive error in not tracking the run and ball watching. It was just so quick that Reis couldn't react fast enough. But he did stop JPA on a few golden scoring opportunities. The is something wrong with Cristman. I don't know what it is exactly. He seems to put himself is good positions, he makes decent runs, and he's a hard nosed attacker, but he simply can't put the ball in the net. Joseph play well, but the PK miss can not be forgotten. Khano sucked. There was a point where I asked myself "Has Khano made a single cross yet?". Seriously, there were so many time where the ball would switch over from Ralston or Dorman, he would collect with alllot of space and he would either try to beat his man (and fail), or pass back to Joseph. I was scream at the tele "Just cross it!" The team as a whole played decent, not good, not bad, just decent. The speed of play needs to raise. If we can play 1-2 touch soccer through the midfield, then we can send any defense off balance and out of shape. It when we get the ball and look up to find a pass instead of already knowing it, that the play slows down. RRREV IT UP
Definitely a "better lucky than good" three pointer. Gotta have a few of those in the course of the season. To give credit where it's due, that was a very sweet, very simple 1-2 and a stellar finish for the goal. How often do we have pieces of the puzzle, but the touch fails on the return pass, the pass is a little behind or our forward misses the frame or hits the keeper? PLEASE cap Jozy! I tend to cut Khano slack on his liabilities because he creates two or three great chances a game with his crosses. Not last night. He was useless. Part of the problem is that our usual way to get the ball to Khano is to give it to him just past midfield and have him run by the defender. It works one in ten tries and takes long enough for the defense to have plenty of time to get ready for the cross they know is coming from the game tapes. The other nine times are an embarassment and a turnover. The best opportunities -- like we say in KC -- come with a deep diagonal through ball to Khano that unbalances the defensive shape and that he can run on to and one time into the box. Those don't come often enough because there is such a strong likelihood that the ball will be lost. Self-fulfilling prophecy. Khano makes a few runs. Ball doesn't get played. He goes in lazy, useless mode. Thomson was much more useful though I agree he should switch to decaf on game days. One of the kids Khano coaches was sitting in our section and holding up a "Put in Khano" sign after he was subbed. The whole section was shouting him down. I'll give the kid credit. He stood up for his coach and held his sign high.
