Singing songs in English or Spanish

A few general thoughts. If I anger you, let's talk.

The point of singing, etc. is to get as many people in the stadium as possible to sing along. Therefore, a supporters group should facilitate that.

Whoever starts a song doesn't matter; everyone should join in.

Like it or not, most people in the stands do not know Spanish. So, Spanish songs are lost on the majority of the people supporting the team. I think most people need to be more comfortable singing in English before they try in Spanish.

Nothing offensive meant here. I'm just saying most people are hesitant to sing in a language they know, therefore, they won't try in any other language.

By doing certain songs in certain situations, people learn songs. For example, yelling "********" at the keeper. If EB/TA did more things like "Let's go Dynamo" when we have a corner, tense moments in a match, etc. the whole crowd would join in.

After all, the point is for EVERYONE to support the team, not just supporters groups.

By the way, during the second half of the Dallas match, this started to happen. It was great to hear the majority of the stadium chanting together.

    Re: Houston Dynamic Dynamo Band

You have good points. I take no insult by what you have posted. the thing is that it's really up to each fan to do what they wanna do and to have the SG's sing in English or Spanish has no effect.IMO.

    Here's my take;

Most of the people are limited to the "Lets go Dynamo" chant which one repeats about three, four times and that's it. most people want to sit and enjoy the game like in a baseball field or what have you.

Some people are more like the Football crowd and will be yelling and heckling the other teams players. And then you have your diehard fans that will sing the entire game. wave flags and hang up banners. scream at the Ref. and every rival that wants to act up in our house.

The first crowd is the soccer moms. the second is the STH crowd, and the third is the TA/EB........It's up to each one of us to choose who you wanna join, and singing in Spanish or English has nothing to do with it, because it was from Dre00 that I learned the chants in Spanish, so if someone wants to sing in Spanish, they can sure learn to do so. But we should try to include everyone, so lets learm some English and German songs too. I'm for that ;)

I couldn't agree more with Bandido. Involvement at the game has very little to do with what language you are comfortable speaking. Before I started coming to games my grasp on spanish was very limited. Now my grasp on spanish is very limited except for TA/EB chants. I want to learn more, but it's the way I want to experience the game that has lead me to learn what I have so far, not by what language I speak.

I actually believe that most people would love to sing the songs, but they just dont know them. This past game I snuck down to the third row just behind the goal, just to see how different the game experience is. Since I usually sit with the TA\EB I knew all the songs, and was singing them down there. Multiple people asked me what you guys were saying and how the lyrics went. They seemed as if they wanted to get involved, but just didnt know how to sing the chants. I really think there is potential in creating a fantastic stadium-wide atmosphere if we promoted the songs we sing. We dont have to change the lyrics or the language, we just have to make them more readily available to those who would like to join in the chants, while still sitting in their section of choice. I have some ideas of how we can do this, is you guys are intrested.

this topic has been discussed before many times by both sg's. among eb members we also see a need to have a couple of chants in english because we want the players to actually understand what we're saying but it has not been something easy to incorporate. many have tried but lack the patience to keep trying and to get the supporters to learn the songs.

heck several of us in eb hound our own about not learning the spanish ones fast enough....

TA Solder- if you really want to take on this task then I urge you to meet the core of the EB members at the tailgates and pitch your chants...it's not going to happen in the stands

Has anyone tried posting the lyrics or words in the songs/chants? I normally sit in 220 and I hear you all but I can't understand what you are saying (English or Spanish). The only chant that has made it to my section was "Let's Go Dynamo"....probably because it's about as simple as you can get and most supports have done it at football, basketball, and baseball games.

Also with the Spanish....I would be willing to learn the songs/chants in Spanish but I'd really like to know what I was singing/chanting in English before I said them.

The singing and chanting brings alot to the game. I'm glad you all come out, I really couldn't imagine a Dynamo game without both support groups!

Hector from El Batallon and I have put pen to paper on a kick ass CLUTCH CITY chant. We need to practice this one cuz it answers the call for another song in English.

Ze Germans need to get going on the Dynamo Uber Chants! DALE DALE DALE SCHWABE! DALEEEE! SCHWABEEE!!!

It has become that a Houston Dynamo home game isn't complete without the hinchada in full voice.

    Thanks my friend!

I know Hector has come up with some good ones...we've tried them at the tailgates but more people need to be interested in learning them at the tailgate in order for them to make it to the stands.

C'mon I've seen many of you at karaoke night at the mezz...:D:p
Don't be shy to try and sing at the tailgate...

I'll print up sheets with lyrics for the next tailgate, right now I have the last three that you posted in the El Batallon thread, if there are others anybody wants added send them to me. Just let us know when you start practicing so we can get people involved.

We'll find out who's more interested in eating hot dogs than singing.

Before EB joined us up in the stands - we only sang in english (well except for a little Ole!). :) There's a nice list and discussion here:
    https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=334698

Some are as simple as DYNAMO sung to Stars and Stripes Forever: Dynamo Dynamo Dynamo-o. Dynamo Dynamo Dynamo-o. Dynamo Dynamo Dynamo. Dynamo. Dyna-mo. DY NA MO! The lyrics aren't hard, the tune is easy, and it's the same in english, spanish, and german. :)

There are a couple Texas songs - of course, everyone knows Deep In The Heart of Texas and I'm sure the whole crowd would join in... any opinions on when to sing it? Maybe when the clock shows 18:36?

We also sang part of the banana boat song (mr tally man):
DEEEEEEE ROOOOOOO. DE EH EH RO. DeRo score, mon, we want another goal.

I had a hard time thinking of good songs to sing stuff too - until I started listening to my kid's CDs a little more. There's plenty of songs that we could sing - simple and easy - that are better than chants but can easily be picked up. I suggested a while back this song that was made up by my little 3 year old Dynamo fan:

To the tune of 10 little indians (see caps to match emphasis):
    (ONE-lil-TWO -lil- THREE-lil_INdians)
    D-y-N - - A-m-Oo
    D-Y-N - - A-M-Oo
    D-Y-N - - A-M-Oo
    Let's Go Dynamo!

I'm sure any fan could pick up on that tune, and the words aren't complicated, even for a 3 year old. :p

There's also quite a few children's counting songs that could make great cheers:
Imagine "5 little monkeys jumping on the bed"
sung as "5 Craig Waibel's jumping on your head" Heheh.

or BINGO sung when goal is scored by Ching or DeRo
    C--H-I--N--G--O
    C--H-I--N--G--O
    C--H-I--N--G--O
    and CHING-O was his NAME-O.

    D--E--RRRR--O
    D--E--RRRR--O
    D--E--RRRR--O
    and DeRo was his NAME-O.

or when one of the guys makes a crushing tackle (Mullan, Waibel, Eddie, etc. all could be said for player):
Where is (player)? Where is (player)?
Here I am! Here I am!
How are you today sir. Very well I thank you.
    Dynamo. Dynamo.

    OR:
    Hickory dickery dock.
    (Burse) just lost his jock.
B Mullan struck 1, Ching scores! They're done.
    Hickory dickery dock.

Me and the guys around me like Tailgate Johnny and his original crew at those first few games and the Ticos that have been around since Opening Night, we sang our DALE DALE DYNAMO song but nobody on the front rows knew what the hell was going on. My oh my how things have grown!
It's fantastic to see guys that did not have a clue what an Hinchada was supposed to be like, come around and now have got all the Spanish songs memorized. Once it is understood how an Hinchada flows for pro men's soccer in our region of the World, it only gets easier to help out on the singing!

Speaking of old rhymes, 'The Eyes of Texas' was up to be sung and that never took off and if there was anyway to rag on an opposing player when he gets yellow carded, we coulda sung 'Yellow Rose of Texas' with "alternate" lyrics that would not pass the BigSoccer censor.

Our doughboys and guys in WWII used to sing it as a song about home....moreso if they were Texans. I don't know if the Aggies soldiers and marines sung it, I 'd reckon' they did but I figured our Dynamo was the one place where the college in State rivalries melted together.

I'm a Red Raider and I don't have a problem singing it at pro soccer matches. Could even make alternate and abusive lyrics.

At the risk of making a mockery out of parliamentary procedure, I'll have to "third" that sentiment. I'm game for all the other Texas songs though. My favorite is our national anthem, "Texas our Texas..." and my favorite line from it is this one:

O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.

Although it probably wouldn't pass the PC test these days I also really like the tune to "Dixie." Perhaps maybe someday someone will come up with some alternate Dynamo/Houston lyrics that could be sung to it appropriately? BTW... "Dixie" was also President Abraham Lincoln's favorite song; reportedly played at both his inauguration and at his request at the White House shortly after Lee's surrender effectively ended the War Between the States.

Despite my aversion to that one particular song I too agree with this sentiment, and will joyously "beak bread" at our weekly futbol communion with those who once donned the burnt orange. And if someone can find me definitive proof that Rudder's Rangers sang that song while storming up the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc then perhaps I'll reconsider...

As a former Red Raider myself, the only words that come to mind when I hear that song is "I've been workin on the railroad":D
