Sorry but no, Dishnetwork rapes DirecTV when it comes to soccer, and HD availability. I have like 35 channels in HD, and another 5 coming tomorrow.

Thats 40 HD Channels compared to how many for DirecTV? 10-15?

La Liga in HD > Any channel you can think of

that's what? one game a week? dish and directv have all the other soccer channels, so if you go with directv you lose 1 game a week. and you gain so much more in HD channels launching in september. I'd rather lose one game that's nearly always real madrid anyway and gain all those HD movie channels.

and directv is going to have 75 HD channels then too. they just launched a new satellite a few months ago that goes online for customers on that date. I imagine there will be a very large rush for installs once it's up and running so I would recommend getting it installed now if you are at all interested. Also they have no plans to raise the price for the HD pack over the $10 it is now.

well, you know, if you're a real madrid fan, then worldsport hd is pretty much worth the price of admission all by itself...

the thing with the premium hd channels is, you have to get the premium channels before you get the premium hd. maybe it's worth it for some, but i barely watch "tv" anyway.

hd soccer is pretty much the only thing that would get me back into the HD broadcast market. if i could figure out how to get skysports hd in north america......

A lot of those channels will not be launched as channels on September 15th.

If you go back to the Press Release that the list was copied from, you'll see some such language as "may" or "upon availability".

Also, many of those channels are regional channels that are blacked out in other areas (like Fox Sports NY, etc.).

It's a game of throwing as many names as possible onto a sheet of paper.

Virtually all of the HD channels in your list that are broadcasting today, are available on Dish today.

One of those channels is launching September 1st and Dish is adding it on September 1st.

Dish is adding other HD channels September 15th, which will probably be most of the HD channels that actually really start operating on September 15th.

Dish is also launching a new satellite in October, and another one in early 2008 (launch delayed from late 2007 due to problems at the launch site). These will be used to add capacity for up to 200 new national HD channels.

But Dish doesn't announce channels that don't exist yet. When the channels exist, they will be added.

actually this list is compiled based on actual announcement of carriage by the channels rather than speculation from a vague directv press release.

I found the source of the list, and it is "announcements by the channels that they plan to have HD channels by year end". This doesn't even mean that the channels will actually be running by year end, since HD channel launchs have frequently been delayed.

The actual list for DirecTV for September of channels not already carried by Dish Network:

    Big Ten Network
    Chiller
CineMax West (3 hour delayed version of same channel already on Dish)
    CNN
HBO West (3 hour delayed version of same channel already on Dish)
Showtime West (3 hour delayed version of same channel already on Dish)
Starz! West (3 hour delayed version of same channel already on Dish)
    Starz! Edge
    Starz! Comedy
    Starz! Kids & Family
    The Movie Channel
    TBS
    The Weather Channel

(* Also on the list is History Channel, which has been announced by Dish Network for September 1st - which probably means it won't be running until then. )

Note that Weather Channel representatives have informally stated that their channel will be on Dish Network around the same time as it launches.

An important thing to note - and this is a great example of what is really happening with these HD channel launches - is that the Weather Channel has also stated that their HD channel won't have any HD programming until some time in 2008 - due to delays in installing HD equipment. So the "Weather Channel HD" on 9/15 will be a 4x3 upconverted version of the regular SD channel, ie pretty much the same thing.

Sorry for not reading the entire thread, but what's the latest news on EPL matches being shown in HD in the USA? Surely Murdoch and Fox have a plan, the question is when will it happen and how will it be done ....

Update: Just scanned the thread. I hope somebody has a bit more info now than the vague FSC statements about HD coming "sometime soon."

I'll believe it when i see it. DirecTV has been having those "over 100 channels in HD soon" commercials for at least 2 years now. And you guys are still getting, what? 10-15 channels in HD?

I've been getting 30+ Channels in HD for over a year now. When my contract runs out in a couple of months, and if DirecTV really does have more HD channels, then i'll just switch. No biggie.

directv has always been pushing the fact that the new HD channels would be launched in september 2007.

I think these are similar to "HD" games shown on ESPN2 in that the channel broadcasts in HD but the actual games are upconverted SD. I can't say this for sure as of this season but that was how it happened in spring 2006 when The Score originated their HD channel.

Sky Sports offers the HD feed for some EPL games, so true HD feeds for some EPL games are there for the taking for North American broadcasters with the will and the way-- so I think you are wrong about the Canadian games being mere upconverts.

Plus, if you read the article, it states in fairly certain terms that the EPL games are HD-- it's all the other Score programming that is not HD and thus Score is having a hard time getting its HD feeds picked up by satellite and cable providers.

And the Thursday night MLS games on ESPN2 HD are true HD broadcasts-- they are not upconverted broadcasts.

That's good to know. I was just going by what I saw on The Score in the spring of 2006. I may have to look into getting an ExpressVu HD-capable receiver then. Thanks for the info.

Except that according to the article above, The Score HD is not available via satellite. It's only available from two cable providers in Canada.

The main problem with getting the EPL in HD in the USA is the lack of an HD channel to show it.
The Score Canada is a sports channel, not a soccer channel, so they have lots of other sources for HD programming to fill a whole channel, such as car racing and wrestling.
Currently, Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta Sports USA barely have enough income to support one SD channel each, FSC has just extended itself to produce its own soccer telecast on Saturday evening, and Setanta has only recently finally managed to get on a second major provider. It's unclear whether either channel's viewers have enough additional extra spending money to pay for the costs of new HD channels.
It won't be unti Fall 2008 before cable and satellite providers have enough new bandwidth to host new niche HD channels. Until then, the most likely scenario is for FSC to try using Dish and DirecTV's HD PPV channels for broadcasting the same big matches (like the FA Cup Final) that they broadcast on SD PPV last year.

I (of course) always watch WorldSportHD when they have the same match as GolTV (such as tomorrow's Madrid derby). Once we can finally get EPL games in HD (which will come... eventually), I will be very very pleased.

or sublicensing to channels like worldsport hd (like goltv does with la liga) or hdnet.

There's no indications that WorldSportHD are interested in expanding their soccer broadcasts (they dropped UEFA Cup), or that HD-NET is interested in any more sports than they have right now.

Whereas Fox Sports already uses the PPV arrangements for FA Cup, etc. so it would be the least work on their part to simply move the matches to HD-PPV channels.

Dish Network is adding 9 more HD-PPV channels on September 12th, and DirecTV is rumored to be doing a similar addition around the same time.
