First, it's a lot easier to jump to a big european team from a mid-level european team than it is from MLS.

    Second, there's the champion's league.

Third, if MLS didn't work it where they get a percentage of future transfer fees, someone needs disemboweled.

Um dude Adu is making the same wages at Benfica that he's making now in MLS. Money is clearly not the issue here.

But in the case you are suggesting that is where we need the salary cap to be raised to at least $4 million.

Adu is going to a much better situation. I wish he could have stayed in the MLS but he made the right choice at the end. His play will improve a lot going over there. Benfica is one of biggest club in Portugal and is the owner of one of the biggest stadiums in portugal (65000 seats). I wish Adu good luck.

Yes, but Holland has a minimum wage required for foreigners, which happens to be around 400,000.

Thanks to all the European soccer fans who have been able to address my post and give us a lot more good background on Benfica. It's very good information, especially for those of us (like me) who don't follow European soccer closely (and who are perfectly comfortable with that fact, we might add). :)

Based on this good information, I can see that Benfica has a number of advantages over even the best MLS clubs, especially for a "half-step" between MLS and the top clubs in Europe, which is what Freddy needs right now.

Many posters have also echoed the points about Freddy's unproven track record so far (especially his limited success so far in the "lowly" MLS), his massive hype (which has apparently reached Europe), and the low dollar figures for his transfer fee and salary. Which were all key points in my post, and things all of us MLS fans knew. Frankly, and no offense is meant by this to anyone, many of us MLS fans are relieved to see Adu go. We've been very disappointed with his play and very disillusioned by his hype. Good luck to him in Portugal, and may he come back and play for the USMNT and help us do well in a future World Cup.

There is no way in the world he gets loaned back to MLS. Where do you come up with such stuff?

This is great for Freddy I was worried he might end up in England. Nothing against the Premiership but I think Portugal is a better league for cultivating a creative player. Spain would be better but beggars cant be choosy. However at $500,000 it doesnt seem like they think much of him.

Now, where can I get my Benefica Adu Jersey:), of course the pundits will say thats the only reason they signed him.

you dont know what the ******** your talking about.

Braga beleneses, boavista, guimaries, maritimo, nacional Leiria would smash any mls team when in form. As all those clubs have regularly been able to beat the big 3( actually big 4 as everyone in portugal considers braga a massive club already) and do well whenever in europe..guimaries at the time was the last place team in the league yet still tied bolton in europe at home with only a ricardo vaz te strike in the last minute saved boltons ass when vitoria dominated all game.

Braga made it to the quarter finals of the uefa cup narrowly losing to tottenham 3-2 over both legs

boavista made it to the semi finals of the uefa cup

leizoes a second division team at the time made it to the last 16 of the uefa cup
boavista won the league in 2001 and when in the CL made it to the last 16

Maritimo, belenenses, nacional and guimaries are teams full of talent that gets thier best players taken away from them transfer window to transfter window by the big 3.

    Yes occasional games against porto?

Sporting lisbon might have a say in that..you know..only one of the biggesty clubs in soccer history..probably has one of the top 3 youth academies in the world and churn out regular stars.

    Yes sporting is easy:(

Please, please tell me i dont have to put with the ignorance of posters who suddenly think they know all about the portuguese league and its history, without knowing barely any player sin the league thinking adu will be one of the best, without knowledge of the superb youngsters or greast players on all the other teams.

Pleas reassure, please tell me i dont have to put up with idiotic posts like this past one.

Just today Uniaio Leiria won 4-1 in europe and they came 7th, and were lucky to do so as maritimo and nacionall all have by far better squads.

    Also newcastle better then benfica?

Sporting 4-1 newcastle in the uefa cup the year they made it to the final.

    ridiculous.

    Good team for Adu.

He may not start 90 minutes at first, but if he takes his development seriously, and if Benfica takes it seriously (something I feel MLS put aside to make some cash on Freddy-mania) then he could be going places.

Benfica wouldn't have paid the transfer if they feel there wasn't some talent in Adu. They are a quality side that regularly plays in Europe.

Keeping Adu wasn't going to stop MLS from being a feeder league when they can only pay 1-2 players per team the same salary that a mid-level European club can pay their average players while the rest of the team makes the same salary as a second or third division player.

I am not saying he will! Didn't Donovan go to Germany once, came back to the US and had a second try? I am just hinting at a situation like that. Benfica will most likely loan him to another premier league team in Portugal or one in Europe, I am sure there will be some interest, unless he is really bad! This of course, if he doesn't hold down a regular place in the team.

I know it's a little off topic, but that is just not right. There is no way that players (foreign or domestic) from Emmen, HFC Haarlem or Veendam makes near $400.000 a year - if they are lucky they make 80.000.

    Bradley's at Heerenveen.

Do any of the clubs you just named have foreign players?

None of them are in the Eredivisie, anyway, which is where the foreigner minimum wage applies.

and it seems like portugal and spain are trying to cash in on the iberian rivalry just like mexico and the us are cashing in on the mex/usa rivalry:

Training day in and day out with Benfica's reserves, whether he gets much first team play or not, will better serve him than playing full time in MLS. The guy's only 18. Time is on his side, plus he will be closely monitored by the larger Euro clubs who will have better access to him there than if he's here.

Also, people here keep referring to his earning power as being the same there as it is here, but I don't think Adu would continue to make $500K a year in MLS with his lack of production. Who would sacrifice a DP slot on him when he doesn't play well unless he's under the international spotlight?

You obviously have never been to Lisboa -- you buffoon. Terrible place (compared to Salt Lake area) and to sign for five years -- I assume Benfica will be looking to transfer fee him up the chain in good time. Don't understand why some think Lisbon is a "pretty" "cool" place. Old buildings don't make a city nice.

When he gets transferred again, then I will be happy for him. Portugese league ain't much better -- probably WORSE -- than the MLS (Other than the top 3 teams). Anyhoo, good luck to Freddy....wish him well and hope he continues to develop

You and your statistics and inferences is the reason why we European fans make fun of MLS supporters. Have you ever watched Benfica play? Do you remember who defeated defending champs Liverpool in the CL and sent them packing. Oh and two years ago we also took out Man U. We have two CL trophies and are always a threat. We are also the club with the biggest paid supoprters. We also have millions of supporters in Africa, Asia and N. and S. America. Why wouldn't Adu want to play for us? He will finally feel what it's like to play in front of 60,000 fans in a brand new stadium in a soccer mad country with great weather, lifestyle and all.

    SCORE!!!!!!!!

SCHOOL THESE YOUNGSTERS!!! :D They have no clue. To them the SuperLiga means the little rivalry with more clubs like in Mexico..

MLS would be a second division league in Portugal. You guys are out of your mind.

I dont think he is a buffoon for calling Lisboa a pretty city. I think you are the one who needs to leave the Bible belt and go out there and see for yourself.

    1) I know. I'm also quite sure that danish boys aged 15 and 16 who signs for Heerenveen, PSV or Ajax doesn't make $400.000 a year.
    2) Yes - players from Burundi, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Macedonia among others.
    3) That doesn't make sense. The Eredivision and the Eerstedivision is run by the same federation and the players is represented på the same union.

BTW I'll think Benfica is a great club for Adu to go to. They play attractive attacking football, have a nice stadium and he will be practicing and play with some great players he can learn a lot from. And if/when he make it there he can move on to a bigger club somewhere else in Europe.

I wish Adu all the luck in the world at Benfica and hope he'll be a contributing player on the team, not to mention developing his talent.
