More importantly, will it make any money for transfers since we wont have European money next season?

I've got a ridiculous idea: fix the team before you mortage out the club to new ventures.

It is being funded entirely by outside investment ie Newcastle do not pay a penny for the extension.

If this does go ahead then it will be the 5th major construction project within a square mile. It's going to be a nightmare

    How stupid.

We can't even sell out the current ground every game yet we're gonna expand.

    ******** off Shepherd.

You constantly get over 50k for home league games, I would say the expansion is easily justified. Plus it sounds like this money is coming from another source and is not directly related to the football club, I cant see how a toon fan can look at this in a negative way this can only mean good for the club. Plus your stadium will look a lot better and less lobsided than it does at the moment.

Newcastle's avg attendance in the Prem the past four years:

    51,923
    51,439
    51,844
    52,032

The renovations are being proposed in part to accommodate some Olympic games, and would bolster the case for St. James and England in any WC bid. If the WC bid is successful those two events would mean about 6-9 bonus games at the park, and that alone might pay for the actual stadium renovations. Throw in that Newcastle will at the least surely sell out for bigger contests and there's no reason to suspect this can't be a money maker for the club. It won't make a huge difference in $ the way Liverpool's move will, but it'd be more money none the less.

My only concern is the viability of the site should the club warrant even larger grounds in the future. It's safe to say any renovation to the last single tier side would cost a pretty penny on land purchases alone, and while I certainly can't speak as to the crowd and traffic management it looks like things could be a mite crowded.

I've only seen St. James from TV and the net, but it's always looked amazing. I simply hope if this expansion goes through it's done right so the EPL continues to feature the best stadia going. The fans deserve no less.

Yea, but unfortunately we don't only play home league games. 26,000 turned up for our UEFA Cup 1st leg against AZ Alkmaar. I believe we barely got 20,000 for the home FA Cup and league games this year. (of course minus Chelsea) This is because FFS and the rest of the geniuses in the board room think it's ok to charge the same amount of money for a game against Birmingham City as they would for Spurs. It's luncay and until they get a grip we will continue to have 20K in a 52 K stadium for an FA Cup or European fixture. Now, the 60K will be even worse and they will no doubt hump up the prices a little more. I hope the season ticket boycott goes through.

True about the cups, however your home league gates easily justify an increase to 60k.

Agreed, if we can fill it for home league games every week when we are shit, imagine the demand when all the bandwagon supporters latch on if we actually win something...ever.

Still in the design and planning application process. No one has be contracted to do the work yet. The companies that built both expansions to St James' has both gone bust and the 3 of the biggest building firms in the country have large sites within 1/2 mile of St James' so it's anybodies guess who gets it

It will stay lopsided as long as they remain on that site. The houses behind the east stand are grade1 listed buildings. The only way to add on 7000 extra seats is to extend the Gallowgate end further back over St James metro station. This will cost an absolute fortune as the metro station will need to be demolished and a new one built. It can't hold anymore construction above it.

Leezes terrace isn't grade 1 listed they are only under protected building status which means they could be moved or demolished if it is deemed necessary for the development of the area. I personally wouldn't want this to happen because I like the terrace.

Building on the metro station isn't all that hard and it wouldn't be that expensive. Any redevelopment of the stadium would also include some kind of hotel on the site directly behind the stadium which the club owns.

I'll take your word for it on the status of the houses in Leazes Terrace.

From what I've heard the metro station can't be built on as it stands. A mate's father mentioned it. He's a qualified architect and works now for transport company in the north east.

Strange how the football club owns the land behind the stadium but not the land their stadium is built on isn't it.

Architects don't know shit, all they are is drawing monkies.

Well when you have a 999 year lease on the land you practically do own it :D

The stadium could be built as above with strengthening work carried out where the metro is (planning permission already approved for this). Also the smaller stand you see in this picture could have a new roof put in place, perhaps a 'goalpost' crossbeam design, this would rise the hight than the current roof. The end result being a great stadium that is more or less balanced and with a bit of character too.
