What are the chances Dynamo can repeat this year?

What are the chances of a repeat?

I was worried at the begining of the season when we started off slow, but we have been pickin gup the pace, and we made some good trades (that I was in question of at the time, but they have worked out). The only thing I'm worried about is ties. In the past 11 games we have 8 wins and 3 ties (I'm sure most all of you know this already), but we can't keep getting draws against good teams. We need to beat them. Especially when the playoffs come around. I have $50 (against my cousin who lives in Dallas) on our beloved Dynamo repeating this year. How does everyone else feel?

In any soccer league that uses a play off system you can´t really speculate on the % a team has of winning the championship, the way the teams are playing is useless when trying to predict the outcome.

You can be playing very bad, but if you get into the play offs (something that is very easy in a league in which 8 out of 13 teams qualify) and suddenly you get some groove you can defeat everyone, if you qualified as the best team, burning the league, but you lose your groove you will not even get trough the first play off.

And because 8 out of 13 teams do qualify almost everyone right now has a chance of being champion, I say almost everyone because there is no way Real Salt Lake will qualify, but look at the Galaxy they have played only 12 games, DCU has played 16 games and they have only 11 points more, or look at Columbus, they have played 17 games and they have only 12 more points, and even Toronto and Colorado can qualify if they start winning a couple of games.

Now, if this was a first place equals champion league we could be talking about the chances of all teams.

Of the three draws, one of them was due to 8 men defending and 1 on the attack (Toronto) and one of them was due to bad officiating (New England). The only draw that concerns me is the draw at Dallas, where they really controlled the play. We beat DC (at Robertson >_>) and Chivas (also at Robertson), and we thrashed a less-than-stellar RBNY (again, at Robertson) so I'm not concerned about how we're playing against any team outside of Texas.

That being said, I still think we match up favorably against Dallas.

Exactly, it's all about peaking at the right time. We peaked perfectly last year, just like LA peaked the year before. Once it gets to the playoffs, one bad game or call can kill you. I'm wondering if we can maintain our current form, and then expand it in the playoffs.

Having said that, I voted for a repeat.

Re: What are the chances of a repeat?

    Two things:
    1. Don't worry about tying high end clubs. Two of our three ties have been away to the #2 team and the #3 team on the MLS table. Those were good results, we kept them from getting all three in their house. As for the other tie, crap like that happens, it was a blip not a worry.
    2. What makes me nervous about the repeating as MLS Cup Champs is that we end our year against teams that are the bottom end for the table. (As has been noted in the league standings thread.) The trick is for Kinnear to keep the team sharp and close to it's edge without a burnout or blowoff. If they think they have it in the bag we'll see a repeat of what happened in San Jose '05. Since this team is that team, they should know better then to get overconfident. The rest is up just the usual business of keeping the players healthy.

The Supporters Shield counts for something this year, unlike '05, so we're in good shape to do what I really want them to do which is qualify for '08 CCC. (And that relies on player health a little more then sharpness.)

As much as I'd like to be positive, the truth is: "It's still up in the air"

Are you that guy that sits two rows behind me at a baseball game and talks about how the pitcher is pitching a perfect game?

Come on, nothing can put the Dynamo into a funk. We can talk about it all we want. I mean....we do have Craig Waibel, and he counter acts anything superstitious.

I would have loved to have seen this poll about 5 games into the season. Guaranteed totally different results. All the doubters have crawled back under their rocks.

Long story short, we are in the catbird seat to repeat as Champions. Get your plane tickets now gang (how you like that statement Offebacher?? :D )

Actually, you meant to say "Zogby can help you fix a poll..."

I like the sound of that TX Bill, don't get me wrong. And if we make it there I will be there as well, one way or another. It is fun in a way to do these kind of things, but I have seen overconfidence bite a Team in the arse once or twice in my lifetime and therefore refuse to tempt fate when I can.

Actually, I'm surprised no one has started a poll with "How long will it take for Dynamo to sweep all competitions in a Calendar Year?" (CCC, USOC, Superliga, SS, MLS Cup, CWC) ;)

Re: What are the chances of a repeat?

I think that FCLouie's point #2 above makes a lot of sense. That 2005 Earthquakes team was certainly one of the best teams in the history of MLS over the course of a season. But they lost in the playoffs to a team they should've beaten. Those lessons helped motivate this team last year to win the MLS Cup and I doubt they've forgotten about 2005. Of course, nothing is guaranteed (especially not repeating as champions in a league with a lot of parity and a playoff system that initially gives the lower seeded teams a decent chance), but I wouldn't expect these guys to lose focus.
