We've yet to put a very balanced team into one of these things. This was our best offensive team at this level, but we all knew the defense was porous. We started midfielders at LB & RB. While I don't agree with some of Rongen's moves, that's not Rongen's fault. We need to recognize these weaknesses at an earlier level and try to develop those areas before they get to the U-20 level.

We had our chances to grab a 2nd goal before Austria scored and didn't do it. Seitz looked like he'd never played a game on a wet field before. We can blame no one but ourselves.

Maybe someone can word this better, but why does US Soccer seem to develope this habit that 9 out of 10 times when they have the ball in the opponents attacking half, they play the ball backwards towards our holding midfielder? My friend pointed this out to me during the Gold Cup and said they do at all stages of the US Soccer program. So i've been watching more closely and sure enough today there was several chances for the US to play it forward to the forwards or to serve it into the box, yet they always seem to look backwards to the middle first. In the Copa America, i noticed alot of the SA teams attacks came from outside backs, CB's, wingers dropping back. Their attacks didn't always seem to go through one player? I know we don't have the talent of Argentina or Brazil, but it's so frustrating to see the US players surge forward then stop and look to pass the ball back when there's the slightest amount of pressure. Does anyone else notice this?

I've never liked Rongen as a coach. He's pretty much destroyed any team he's ever coached in MLS, and today obviously speaks for itself. Our forwards were very selfish towards the end. Several clear chances on goal that probably would have gone in if we didn't shoot from an awful angle while we had numbers in front. Ward... yikes. Note to future games of great importance.... don't start a hobbled keeper. How many yellow cards were handed out anyway?

And I don't see how anybody can say that a single one of these players should be starting for the full men's team as of today.

In 2008 probably, in 2009 for sure, but today, no.

Bradley has an issue with reckless cardable challenges.
Altidore is finishing, but had difficulty playing with Austrians on his back and was not able to win and hold the ball. He's the closest IMO.
Adu is quick, very quick and very dangerous.

Adu and Altidore should start seeing sub minutes with the full team. The last U20 team had great revelations in Feilhaber and Wynne, but this team just displayed the two already identified players as being full of potential.

Freddy was selfish numerous times and it ended up really hurting us. In the first half when we were showboating, he could have laid it off for Alti and Rogers once each - and then in the extra period - some really weird decisions by Freddy. Weird after we had been passing so well, we get selfish in this game.

I take small consolation in the fact that we weren't getting past Spain. Okay, no I don't.

I am not so sure about that. He was losing possession again and again in the crucial strech of the beginning of 2nd half. One touch passes in heavy rain in your own half?! ?

Somehow he played better actually after his yellow card but he still cannot shoot to save his life. So he's really not that good either.

Agree. Also too many times our guys just try to be too cute and pulled off those crap one touch pass that is not going to work in the rain. Just making things simple and keep the control of ball then find someone to pass. This one touches always were making turnover so scary.

Really? We hit the turf and its either play on or foul. They hit the turf and its automatically a foul and likely a card.

Amen, we deserved to lose today because we were outhustled and out coached and in the end outplayed, by the way I hope Adu can learn to stop whyning so much...but when will we get treated the same way as the opposition by the referees? What was the total amount of cards, 2 cards off the ball? For what? I just want the game called both way but the IKEA ref today seemed to call everything a bit slanted.

Is it at all possible they were saying, "Addduuuuuuuuuuu"?

Mind, he does whine and complain everytime somebody touches him, and I've seen it in MLS, too.

I disagree, respectfully. Both of Austria's goals were slop/garbage, ours was textbook perfection. They got lucky, we didn't, end of story.

We are still not good enough technically, physically and tactically. Some of our guys in the squad are good, but some are terrible and our tactic are still naive. These terrible players and bad manage paid us like bottleneck. Getting passed Uru was already lucky.

They got like 3 yellow cards so this is a bit silly, but the US were making stupid and clumsy tackles all over the field resulting in cards.

I agree that while Bradley had some impressive flashes in the second half, he gave the ball away far too often.

This team played exactly like they've always played. Give it up. The fact is, the better team DID win.

we're too dumb to adjust to the ref, as someone already said. He was not having physical play today, but I guess that's all the US knows. Fact is, tackling is lacking in the midfield badly! The defense played no worse than S. korea, brazil, uruguay and not really tested against poland. I've said it in pregame and in game, if you're going to beat this austrian team, you've got to possess in their half. Their defenders are just as bad as ours. Simple as that.

The austrians possesed the ball well in our half, and were patient. Now if we did the same, the scores would have been flipped. But no, we had to keep with the LONG BALL, and bonehead passes to the opposing midfielders.

I thought about that as well. As for whining I've seen many worse at it than Adu and they don't get booed, if that is what they were doing.

As with Uruguay, the team was flat out overconfident. Adu shot when he should have passed, and it just seemed like they were sure they were going to the next round.

I agree. I think it was a great tournament to place individuals into the shop window both for their current teams and for overseas oppurtunities. Not pleased to go out, but for me the important thing is developing players for the senior side. And from that standpoint Sturgis, Svetela, Adu, Altidore, Zizzo and Rogers all proved that they can produce on the big stage. Now the key is to get consistent first team action.

I am starting to see why so much focus is put on national team coach Bradley.

The coach and the gameplan is SO important.

This game was lost by Rongen for being bad in preparation and game management.

I have no idea how he has been a winner around the globe in soccer. My guess is its the familiar tale of a coach wining one way but not adjusting and changing with the game.

You play to win. Not to not lose.

Got it. I didn't see that game, though if both teams played the day before, both would have been dead tired.
