Yeah, I'm with Bootsy. I've spoken with Facundo twice and I thought he was very sweet.

I will NOT be happy to see him go, if this goes through.

As much I've come to love Facundo's high flyin', swashbucklin' style... that bike back to Troy gave me the biggest WTF! moment I've ever had in watching a DC United game. That one play alone kinda sums up Erpen's mentality on the field.

Each game I look forward to seeing what Erp-fu trick he pulls out of his bag, but has any of those tricks really been to the betterment of the team? I don't think so.... he needs to learn that his job isn't about flash or style, it's about toughness, timing, and trying to be the most intelligent player on the field.

If you are missing one (or more) of those attributes as a defender, you need to get a new job.

    Re: Vanney to DC?!

I don't think that there's anyone here that would dispute that Erpen has flaws in his game, or that those flaws have led to dangerous situations, or even occasionally goals.

I think most of the people here who think this trade is a crappy idea think so because they feel that Vanney would not be an improvement. In fact, I can't imagine how anyone could have watched Vanney's performance against us last night and be excited about the trade. Yes, everyone has bad games from time to time; but when was the last time that Vanney had a really good game? He's more expensive than Erpen, he's much slower than Erpen, and he's every bit as prone to error as Erpen -- different kinds of errors, to be sure, but errors nonetheless. He's more consistent than Erpen -- but that consistency is at a below-mediocre level. He's not good.

    Re: Vanney to DC?!

I think people are jumping off the deep end a little too quickly here.

We don't know how much of Vanney's salary Colorado is picking up.

We don't know if this is the precursor to a much bigger deal. Fred, Emilio, and Gomez are our three SIs - add Erpen to the mix next year and we are capped out on SIs. Maybe this is in order to free up that SI spot to go after someone in August.

I will wait until all the pieces are known before deciding what I think of this trade.

Agreed. This move is not costing us MLS Cup this year or even next year. And isn't Dallas pickup up a bunch of Vanney's salary this year no matter where he plays?? I'm willing to wait and se what else happens.

6 pages of comments, 4 of which could have been eliminated by people actually taking the time to read everything that Goff wrote.

You guys haven't got this figured out yet?

Someone posted that this must be a part of a three team deal, that we'll ship Vanney to another team. Someone else posted that it was all about how a player fits with a team. Makes sense.

Hmmm...what team does Vanney, an ageing, past-his-prime, expensive, former National team player fit?

(Light Bulb) I got it. We'll trade Vanney to Bruce and the Dead Bulls. Now who on the Dead Bulls do we want?

I mean, otherwise, it just makes no sense.

    Deal is done:

    http://blog.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/

No further information on salary or anything else.

    Goff:
From what I understand, this deal was in the works for a few weeks.

My take: United has always coveted Vanney, dating back to when he decided to re-sign with MLS in 2005 after a few years in Europe, and appreciates his experience and leadership. With Vanney in his 12th pro season and having just turned 33, this is clearly a decision for the very short term -- a run at the MLS championship this year. The club apparently felt it could not do that with the erratic Erpen. Are more moves on the way? We'll see.

OK DC United Forum Whipping Boy position is open

    Albright
    Convey
    Adu
    Erpen

I'm too lazy to go back before Albright. Who gets this position now??

I hope this works out for the best. I do think that we need some help in central defense, but I'm just not convinced that that someone is Vanney.

Come on - how could you forget about Marco? Those were some ugly times on these boards.

    My vote - Gros.

    Re: Vanney to DC?!

If there are not more moves on the way, would you still consider picking Vanney up to be a short-term move towards the championship? That would only make sense if Vanney is clearly an upgrade. Erpen sometimes has good games. Vanney?

This feels like pre- and early-season Toronto FC to me.

    Oh yeah, Marco. :D

Gros is probably the odds on favorite. Though I am going to think that Mosse will shoot up the boards as his playing time increases. Addlery and B Carroll are the other two.

Damn. I really like Erpen's style. I know the consensus is a defender should be boring and safe but I liked that he took risks. I played as a defender for years from rec to club to college and sometimes you have to take risks to help your team. I wish I could've pulled off the flying, biking, leaping tackles like Facundo. His talent and ability impressed me. I guess the disconnect is that many here don't think Facundo was helping the team. I'll miss him.

Jamie and Carroll are also two top contenders.

I don't know - but even if this is the last move I will wait until I see him paired with Boswell before casting this trade off as horrible.

How many people would have said the Mathis trade to NY was a good trade for NY at first?

My mind's still not made up about Cletus, hehe. But you're absolutely right -- just because a move looks bad to someone doesn't mean it will be; I've certainly been wrong about such things before and I know I will be again. But if I "waited and saw" about everything, what would I have to talk about?

    Re: Vanney to DC?!

Ya, I'm not too worried about Vanney's speed... he's not as slow as everyone is making him out to be.

The pairing of Boswell and Vanney is still arguably faster than the pairing of Nelsen and Petke back in '04.

The speed deficiencies of those two didn't seem to hurt us too much when it came time to winning the MLS Cup.

<-- ducks to avoid mass posting of people telling me I was comparing the relative skills of Nelsen and Vanney when, in fact, I was comparing Vanney to Petke.
