A surprise start to this game at Giants Stadium. A lively crowd and the Cubans take a surprise lead halfway through the first half.
Absolutely gorgeous save by the Cuban goalkeeper where he had to backtrack to tip a shot shot off the crossbar and prevent a goal. Minute 29.
ha ha im loving it common cuba. but i fully expect mexico to pull it off they are just too good of a team Never underestimate your opponent.
Of course, two years ago, I was sitting in the stands in Seahawk Stadium when Cuba had a 1-0 lead on the US until late in the 1st half... The night is young.
Some good skill on that Cuba team. Wouldn't mind seeing a couple of them in MLS including the goal scorer (Alcantara) SP? If only the Cuban gov't would open up just a little bit, just a little.
Cuba just gave up a shaky goal. Borghetti appeared to be in a passive offsides position and the GK raised his hand lookinjg at him instead of saving a fairly routine shot from Bofo.
OK, my bad, my eyes deceived me. First off, Borghetti just got his head on the ball and he got the goal. Also, it appears he was just even with the Cuban back as the ball was played. May have been a centimeter offside but it was REALLYCLOSE. All told, a good goal.
Otherwise, the Cuban GK has been flat out excellent. Just made another big save. Let's see this get to half time level and the Mexicans sweat a little bit.
like i said they will turn it around but it would be nice if cuba held on or scored again. makes the gold cup more interesting that way.
1-1 HT Reynier Alcantara is a damn good player. Born in 82 (26 years of age). Have to be impressed by the Cubans No Fear Attitude. Through 5 and a half Gold Cup games, I've been entertained and enjoyed nearly all the games. The level of CONCACAF play has improved. Perhaps, the CR's have declined in quality, while Canada, Panama, and maybe even Cuba look a notch better than just a couple years ago.
Agreed. Said on another thread he reminds me of Donovan when Donovan is on. Just curious where you got this info. I've looked on the web for DOBs on the Cuban players and couldn't find it. That's one of the things that jumps out at me. That, and they're more technical than in the past but they are very athletic and as they have found when they play us, Mexico struggles with really athletic teams. I didn't see Wednesday's games, just the highlights but so far lots of close games and some great goals. Definitely entertaining. Also, the US is the only team to post a shutout in the first cycle of games. Costa Rica always seems to struggle right after the WC but has things figured out by the Hex. They're also not nearly as good away from Saprissa.
Hopefully cuba can get a tie at least and maybe a win, the mexico/paraguay game really sucked the confidence out of mexico
Goldcup.org has a list of rosters, ages, and clubs for all nations in the 2007 Tournament. Cuba's roster: http://www.terra.com/deportes/articulo/html/fox384981.htm
Cuba has done well in international sports. Not sure what the correlation is, but they have had dominant athletes in track and field (hurdles and high jump) come to mind. The US has been none for speed. Cuba seems to just have a number of high level athletes. Now if their governement would allow them to challenge themselves outside their own country,
Thanks. BTW, according to the link Alcantara is 25. Back to the game, I wonder why Cuba wouldn't start Lester More. Coming into the game, he was supposed to be their best attacker. And, as I write this Cuba's GK spills a rebound - albeit from a pretty well-struck shot - and Mexico is up 2-1 so perhaps More will be coming in soon. IF he doesn't play, I'm gonna think he defected before the game.
