After having read "Once in a Lifetime: The Incredible Story of the New York Cosmos" and watched its companion movie Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos last year, and having just completed reading Clive Toye's "A Kick in the Grass", I thought I'd give this thread a bump.

The main difference between those two books and "Soccer Fever - A Year with the San Jose Earthquakes" is that the former were written over two decades after the NASL's demise while the latter was written while the league was still alive. Those other two books had the benefit of hindsight whereas this book had the benefit of near-immediacy. All in all, reading all three books was a good expericence all-around. :)

Has anyone else here read (or is reading) any or all three of these books?

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!!

That's understandable, as those two books are more recent and thus easier to find.

How do you rate them? (I was thinking about buying the Cosmos one, but it's pricey and I was afraid it might be dated)

An awesome football book is the one about the 1950's US Men's NT.

    Trivia:

1.Name the NT with the first WC match win, ever (and, NO, the answer isn't France....this team's match finished 1st)

    2. Name the NT with the first hat trick (wins) in WC history.

    Also, way OT...

Is there a Sacramento Knights subforum somewhere here?

OK, I looked it up, U.S. 3-0 over Belgium(?), ahead of France over Mexico.

I have had the book "Soccer Fever A Year with the San Jose Earthquakes" for some time now. In fact, in another thread, I posted a photo of Krazy George on a camel, which I scanned from the book. I took it to one of the rallys that was held in downtown, prior to the team move to Houston, and got several autographs from the guys who attended the rally. The one I have is a hard cover copy that is in excellent condition. Inside the front cover, there is a note that it is "For Display Only". I bought it on Amazon a few years back.

I've read "Once in a Lifetime" and parts of "Soccer Fever." I agree with your assessment.

I'm reading "Soccer Against the Enemy" now. I have a certain appetite for soccer literature at the moment, so if folks have favorite soccer books, I'm interested in hearing about them.

Didn't an American score the first hat-trick? Bert Patenaude? Or is that an urban myth? ;)

I also have this book. I think it was written in 1975 either before during or right after Pele signed.

My Soccer Fever has a 1977 copyright and a note that it's a first edition. I believe it focuses on the 1975 team though.

It is about the 1975 season. The arrival of Pele is mentioned a few times. Some of the attendence numbers for the Cosmos are mentioned.

You're fortunate to get a "For Display Only" version that was practically untouched. :)

I wonder if Krazy George will enter ever the stadium on a camel again (perhaps next year?). :D

I've had two older hardcover (with slightly frayed dust-covers) soccer books for the longest time that I never seemed to get around to reading. I forgot the name of one of them, but the other is titled "Scientific Soccer in the Seventies".

I'm not exactly sure where in the house they are at the moment, but I know that they're there somewhere. I'll have to search for them, but once I find them, I'll no doubt once again be whisked away to a gentler, simpler time of the beautiful game.

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!!

Though that fact will probably be ignored by fans of other countries just as much as how the term "soccer" wasn't invented by Americans.

The English invented it, I believe.
