    Casiraghi will hold a 3 day training session starting on Monday for the U21 squad.

    There is one surprise, as he has not called up Roma goalkeeper Curci, but instead has called up Palermo Primavera goalkeeper Sirigu, who is having an excellent Primavera campaign.

    Portieri:
    Consigli (Sambenedettese), Sirigu (Palermo), Viviano (Brescia);

    Difensori:
    Canini (Cagliari), Chiellini (Juventus), Coda (Udinese), Criscito (Genoa), Mantovani (Chievo), Marzorati (Empoli), Motta (Udinese), Raggi (Empoli);

    Centrocampisti:
    Cigarini (Parma), De Martino (Udinese), Dessena (Parma), Lazzari (Piacenza), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Morosini (Bologna), Nocerino (Piacenza), Padoin (Vicenza), Paonessa (Vicenza), Rosina (Torino);

    Attaccanti:
    Lupoli (Derby County), Palladino (Juventus), Pazzini (Fiorentina), Pelle’ (Cesena), Rossi (Parma).

    wow, glad that Sirigu is doing well. I knew he was praised as an emerging talent... That's a great achievement. :)

    btw The only sad part being that a sardinian talent is not playing for Cagliari.

    Dessena, Marchisio (who was called in Dessena's place) and Pazzini were all sent home because of minor injuries and the reason Curci along with Aquilani and Andreolli were not called up is because of the Coppa Italia final being played tomorrow

    Good to see Paonessa continues to be called up who IMO is our second best prospect in the trequartista role, he's a very talented kid

    is this common? to just call the U-21's for training purposes only? i've never heard of that being done. I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea (for the U-21's) but it seems curious.

    this is the first time I hear of it. I guess Casiraghi wanted to get them together before the tournament in June and with no friendly dates on the calendar this was the only way to do it.

    The Azzurrini played a friendly match today against Fiorentina's primavera and won 5-0 with goals from Palladino 12', Chiellini 26' and Nocerino 30' in the first half then Rossi 23' and Lupoli 27' in the second half

    This was our starting line-up, a 4-1-4-1

    Consigli; Raggi, Coda, Mantovani, Chiellini; Cigarini; Lazzari, Nocerino, Padoin, Palladino; Pellè

    There's no decent goalkeeper in this team. The rest is pretty good, probably one of the most talented ( just regarding "skill", o per chi capisce l'italiano, i piedi ).

    It is a very skilled squad and the next one will be just as skilled and in the attack even more skilled with players like Paonessa, Russotto, Rossi, Lupoli, Giovinco and Foti and maybe even guys like Di Gennaro and Forestieri all trying for a place in the team

    that has been the problem. Italy used to be one of the best countries at producing goalkeepers but right now we aren't producing many good young prospects.

    Out of all these players, which one(s) has a shot at being on the roster for the 2010 world cup?

    My thinking is Aquilani & Rossi for sure.

    How about some others?

    I would say many. definitely Rosina, Montolivo, Palladino, Pazzini, Andreolli, Canini, and Lupoli have a good shot.

    I agree and would add Nocerino (amazing yr in Serie B), Dessena, and Criscito to that list.

    yeah, forgot Nocerino. Not to mention Cigarini, who had an excellent season at Parma and is dubbed the 'new Pirlo'.

    Hey guys, how is that Italy isn't in either the U-17 or U-20 world cup? It makes me slightly concerned about the future.

    I don't know about U-17, but italy tends to focus more on U-21 more than anything

    italy doesn't care about any youth competition except for u21 to be honest. I wouldn't read too much into it, it has been this way for some time.

    Almost all have a shot. 3 years are a long time. And much will depend on the eventuality that older players increase their international experience at club level. We could just finish with a couple of horrible goalkeeper as 2nd and 3rd option ( Curci and Viviano ) just because our best prospects of the end of the 90s have completely failed, while very good forwards are left home to bring some experienced player in his 30.
    If I have to choose I'd say that the ones with most chances are the ones who play for trainers who have faith in young players. So all of the Fiorentina players have good chances ( they are also very very good ), given that Della Valle doesn't want to go for estabilshed players.
    Pazzini, Montolivo, Potenza.
    Rossi and Rosina have superstar potentials.
    Chiellini is already a solid player ( but often young defenders in Italy lose the path cause of big competion from older, more experiences players ). And Palladino could have chances if he definitely start playing as a wing ( if we will use wings ).
    Dessena is my last choice. We don't have depth in midfielders and this guy is quite strong for what I've seen.
    2-3 should make it ( plus a youung keeper, not necessarily one of the three called by Casiraghi )
