Justin Mapp: more useful to the nats as a left or right mid?

I know he is naturally left footed and it is probably his best position, but we actually have tons of depth there. Behind Clint Dempsey we have Mullan and Gaven.....which needless to say is pretty uninspiring. If Dempsey goes down, it doesnt look pretty.

Mapp has proved he can be a terror on either side, we all remember that run against the Danish defenders, and point of fact today most of Mapps runs today came up the right flank today. Looked like the only Chicago Fire player playing today, everyone else was afraid theyd get hit in the eye by a seat cushion or something.

I say we try and turn Mapp into our number two right mid, he's not gonna crack Beasley, Convey, or Adu. But maybe he can give Clint some good competition and provide us with the depth we absolutely need at right mid.

Cant cross with his right foot

So he will cut to get the ball onto his right

Probably get away with it first couple of times because of his speed but it will be predictable

I prefer to see him on the right for all the reasons youy said.
And he could work on the crossing. Sure they will never be spot on, but at least he'll be able to get the job done.

I actually prefer when he makes his runs down the right side of the field. On the left side he tends to outrun everyone to the end line and at times get himself stuck. However, when playing on the right he often cuts to the middle of the field and has more options as he gets closer to the goal.

I'd still like to see him play the attacking mid role...where he won't have to play as much defense.

I'd prefer to see him on the right. At 22, he's probably not going to be able to see much time on the left wing in a US jersey as long as DaMarcus Beasley and Bobby Convey, who are only 2 years older, are around. Justin Mapp is talented enough that we need to get him on the field, and the best opportunity for him is at right mid. Behind Clint Dempsey, we have no viable options among guys under 28. If he really dedicated himself, Mapp could learn to become a reliable crosser with his right foot.

Hmmm ... wasn't it Mapp that sent the cross to Bornstein for his goal vs. Denmark -- with his right foot? :)

Personally, I'd prefer him on the left, but it also depends on who the other players are. He's played on the right with Chicago a little lately -- probably so he can cut in and take a shot.

Why not? Beasley's lost it ... Convey ... he's out injured. Adu would be the most competition. But make no mistake about it ... Mapp has got some quality!

Then take into account the fact that Adu doesn't want to play on the wing...

Yeah ... too bad. If I'm the coach, I'm going to play my players where they are most effective in my system. If that happens to be consistent with their "desires", then great! If not ... too bad. :D

At this point in time, I'm not sure Freddy is a #10 and he's starting to be more effective on the wing where he can run directly at players (a la C.Ronaldo)

How about Mapp in as the #10?

its a very good question, but the obvious answer is, at this point, barring serious injuries to Convey and Beasley, (which is highly possible given their history of fragility, especially as of late) we won't be seeing much of him anywhere but the right...I'd love to see him in an attacking midfielder role...aside from Dempsey and maybe Adu we dont have a better option which on the ball skills, so for right now, i'd say he's Clints backup.....i'd also love to see more of Feilhaber because I saw limited minutes of those last two friendlys...sorry this post doesn't do much to answer the question at hand, yet proposes problems as to why he cannot help us, but i love how Mapp plays and the runs he can make, he just needs to do it more consistently to crack the starting XI

Mapp was moved to the right for stretches Chicago last season to enble he and Guerrero to play in the midfield together. It was not a tremendous success. When playing on the right, Mapp was far less involved in games. I think it was kind of like what we saw from Beasley on the right. In turn, this season, Mapp's primary position was switched to play him centrally, in the hole behind the forwards. But, as he's not a natural posession, or central player, the effect has been that he's essentially been a roaming winger. And that has caused problems, becuase he's tricky on the ball, and this let's him come at different defenders during the game, not letting one guy get settled.

I could see playing Beasley and Mapp as the two wingers, and just letting them both do a fair amount of switching around, mixing up the looks. I wouldn't mind seeing this once.

Noonan shouldn't be left out of the equation. When he's healthy, he's a very good right mid. And, iirc, he'll only be 30 in 2010.

I'd like to see Mapp tried at CAM for the Nats. That might work well with Donovan. Mapp, an attacking mid that favors his left; Donovan, a withdrawn forward that favors his right.

After watching last night's performance, and taking into account his performance thus far this year w/ Chicago, I think Justin Mapp should play Left OUT for the USMNT.

Just my opinion. At some point, dribbling into traffic and falling down just get's old.

he played great last night? best player for Chicago by far (even though Thiago made things happen when he came in)....Mapp was the target man the whole game for the Dallas D, and he still made an impact. Right now Mapp is a backup for the USMNT, but he is very close to starting...time will tell

yeah i was just gonna say.....Mapp had a great game. He's been pretty much the only Fire player over the past two weeks whos looked even remotely threatening. Easily deserves a callup. Probably the offensive player with the most upside that we have not named Adu or Altidore

Please ... no more Beasley or Noonan. We need players that are better technically and tactically. Mapp happens to be one of them and is one of the higher quality emerging American players in the league.

mapp glides with the ball with speed a la kaka, and has a way above average left foot. i think he is in line to receive interest from top euro clubs. i heard an everton rumor. as for the nats, i think he can line up on the left but play a free role througout the game.

i also dont think we should worry about who should start out of beas, convey, adu, mapp, dempsey. with the depth i see in the midfield in future years, i think bob will have the luxury to play the hot player, or the player that best fits in the gameplan for the opponent.

I didn't say I thought they will be dropped ... I said they should be dropped. :)

If you can't tell the difference in quality between them and Mapp then maybe you don't know what you're talking about ... :D

he's better than adu, the guy can help the nats at lm, rm or am. the guy should be coming off the bench if the usa has their full team.

you realize that technically and tactically is only part of what you need, beasley has killer speed and noonan well i dont really know much about him(i dont really watch the revs). Its good to get a good mix of players. like have a beasley type with a dempsey type etc.

you cannot be serious. Theres quite a few more players that were called in to the GC that deserve to be waterboy more than Mapp. Mapps been one of the best offensive players in the MLS this year. Best midfielder we have right now thats not in Europe

Thru 7 games this year Mapp has 1 assist, 0 goals. I like Mapp, it probably more a team thing than a Mapp thing causing his slump. Right now he is not even close to being one of the best offensive players in the MLS.
