No way is he any where near the worst announcer of all time. I've heard some just horrid announcers over the years like some of those games on Gol TV.

He may not be any where near the best but he isn't all the way on the other end of the spectrum either.

Ha....you must be talking about that guy with the almost-Scottish (I can't remember his name) accent. He is freaking hilarious. Problem with Wynalda is he can't help put his foot in his mouth at least 5 times a game. Listen next time and you'll hear it and then apologize to (fill in the blank) for some lame-brain generalization that he made. Give him time.....you'll see.

We'll see what? That he's brash, arrogant, and says things he shouldnt sometimes?

We know this. Alot of people like that. He's also often extremely insightful.

I see that you have watched him a few times. Excellent. The USA has approximately 300,000,000 million people. Surely we could find a former soccer player that is interesting, intelligent, extremely insightful, and respectful of those WITHOUT A MICROPHONE. You see, that is the issue. A microphone is an extremely powerful too. It allows you to drown everyone else out. With power comes responsibility. Mr. Wynalda has abused that power on a regular basis. Unfortunately, ESPN/ABC see fit to continue to allow him to spew his venom. In this, you are very correct, he has his audience that like him. Not me. My Spanish and almost-Scottish is getting better every day because it is so difficult to listen to him in English.

what's even funnier is he was as soft as they came. the U.S. trainers used to tell him his recurring injuries were mental because they knew he was a mental midget

speaks the truth, and quite frankly knows what he is talking about.

Along with Bobby McMahon, the best football pundit in North America.

What a powerful and inquisitive response. You should really find work as a philosopher. Your use of "total" and "moron" shows a deep understanding, frankly, that is rarely seen in the world today. You may want to try and be the founder of the next great world religion. On your alter can be the great "Wynalda", mike in hand, articulating the finer points of the game

I'm sorry, what the hell was I thinking. He's a complete and total idiot as an announcer for reasons that I articulated in a previous post. Try harder.

i never really cared for him but even though he was drunk, what he said about jim rome was the best thing ive ever heard, good for him, he was standing up for the sport in the country over a pompus jackass being jim rome

He didn't seem drunk to me. Maybe a little more relaxed after a couple drinks but not drunk. Which makes it all the better that he was just speaking his mind.

one of the best usa soccer players off all time and now one of the best announcers , well actually hes my favorite. I think he'll make a good coach some day as well, maybe for the usa nats as well. The guy just flat out knows his soccer and i always look forward too hearing him come game time. One of the comments that I really liked was when he said the nats need too be the best players at this point in time, well he said something like that. This was when ej was out of form and kept getting caps, which was crazy on bradley's part(although against crappy teams i can understand). Iam a Bob fan but i question some of his judgements.

Wynalda was good for the game. Kinda like Howard Cossell was for Ali and the NFL.

Despite his having left San Jose with hard feelings due to constant conflict with Coach, we still have a soft spot for Eric, despite the ChiFire kit in Hall of Fame pix.
He was the undeniable star of the Bay Blackhawks and the MLS Clash, and the first American Forward to make it in Europe.
Maybe as an announcer he should occasionally been more subtle, but, let's face it, he told it like it is, not the way MLS would have scripted him as a talking head.

Once MLS feels it is really established, they might allow fully honest commentary from someone who was there, and beyond.

    Let Eric be Eric.

What exactly do you mean by "make it"? Wasn't he a bit of a flop in the Bundesliga? I'm not trying to be condescending...but that's how I remember it (maybe I'm too young to have understood what he really accomplished). In my opinion Brian McBride was the first American forward to "make it" in Europe...

But back to Wynalda. Sure some people might think of him as a bit of a loudmouth...but personally I enjoy what he has to say in comparison to the rest of the crackpot announcers that we have here in the US (Marcello Balboa, Dave O'Brien, JP Delecamera etc.). So what if he openly criticizes teams and players? That's what he's supposed to do and he's usually right when he does it! The guy wears his heart on his sleeve and I think he's a great commentator...especially since he was the only guy to stand up to that ignorant, stubborn (American) football worshipping piece of crap Jim Rome!
