The MLS dominate soccer?? :)) to your information there are several European soccer teams with higher revenues than any US teams in any sports. Dream on

there are 5 European clubs that do over $300 million in revenue according to Forbes magazine. There are at least 2 US franchises that do over $300 million -- NY Yankees and the Washington Redskins. the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots may be over $300 million also, but I haven't seen their 2006 figures. so it might be four total.

i wouldn't use the word 'several.'

Yes but he was talking about the MLS dominating soccer wich is just ridiculous when there are teams in Europe That do make more money then even the most popular US teams and professional soccer in Europe as a whole has a total revenue of $15,8 billonhttp://uk.ibtimes.com/articles/20070131/financial-investors-european-football-clubs.htm and growing fast. It is clear that if the MLS makes as much money as the NBA or NFL in the future it would compete over the top players in their prime but i would not use the word dominate.

I have to say this is the stupidest argument I've ever seen.

Hey, let's talk about China...they have, what, 24 times England's population, so they should have about 100 teams that can win it every year, and since they don't, their system sucks.

It's sofa king we todd ed to use POPULATION rather than TEAMS in the point you're trying to make.

    Great point.

It's the CL money and the concomitant international merchandising imbalance that's the problem.

iam not saying have the players delibritley tank games, players that would do that i would never want on my team, what iam saying is if your already in a hole why not make that hole worse by trading a few of you top players so you can get a good draft picks and maybe have a chance at resigning one as a free agent.

you need to know when to hold them and when to fold them like in poker.

i never like it but its better for the league. you always feel like your team has a chance to an extent. it forces for better management of the team. its kind of hard to explain but i love it.

honestly i only watch sports that have a salary cap, i dont watch baseball of course maybe its because its boring.

your face is crap oooooooooooooooo ouch:D

the owner of mls ist owned by team owners i would assume condsidering that every other team sport ist like that

i just think we should work under the salary cap but i guess if the dp spot is actually spent on by the team and not by mls itself than it ist too bad, if iam wrong than obviously we could of raised the salary cap a little instead of making a dp rule. i dont like how each team has one "star player" teams should be a bit more balanced, as possible.

all in all maybe the dp rule ist too bad but the salary cap and the draft need to stay

well dude theres this thing called trading after the draft, a team can always trade up or down in the draft as well. like what happened a few years with eli manning he didnt want to play for the chargers who drafted him so they traded him to the giants.

its seems like beckham is in the minority when it comes to foreign players wanting to be on a specific team

if thats even true its because soccer is the worlds game so they get revenue from around the world, the usa have 3 man sports splitting up the revenue and only have the usa to get revenue on for the most part.

as i said earlier, there are about 3 European clubs that make "head and shoulders" more money than ALL usa pro teams, in all sports. all in all, 5 European clubs are generating more than $300 million a year. in the US, we only have 2: NYY and the Redskins. like I said earlier, the NE Patriots and Dallas Cowboys may have joined the $300 million club in 2006, but i can't find that data. and the data will change for everyone after the 2007 season obviously.

the reason for it is that top European clubs have two leagues with which they draw money from: their domestic league and the UEFA Champions League. there is no CL equivalent for US pro franchises. US pro teams have only their domestic leagues to try to generate that $300 million. If the Yankees had some sort of Baseball World Champions League, they'd be pulling $450-500 million every year.

It depends on how the teams are distributed. I doubt the Chinese league has half a dozen top division teams in one city the size of London.

This thread went from bad to terrible...

We're making population comparissons... Complaining that minor league teams don't have a chance to win...

Which is comparable to saying "Damn it, that Arsenal reserve team ought to be able to compete for the Premiership!" Do I need to even explain how terrible of an argument this is?

Nor is China a first world economy (yet) with a completely urbanized population with massive amounts of disposable income and leisure time suitable for supporting a large number of top quality professional sports clubs. When China has all these things, then and only then can we compare its sports systems to that of Europe or North America. Until then, it's a complete red herring, an attempt to divert the conversation away from the valid points you were making.

You don't have to say it. It already has been. And you can see that its a reality in some situations if you open your eyes. Players can only affect this so much once the decline starts. Pressure from management and coaching strategies can influuce the product (on the court, field, etc). And who care if you'd want them on the team? Your stated attitude is "if your already in a hole why not make that hole worse." Any of your other ideas after that are mute. You need to fold.

If you don't like something that even you can agree is for the betterment of the league, I don't know why you even bother watching. Your team does have a chance, its starts at 0-0 and begins with a whistle. There is a reason the games are played. Do you have any other evidence that it effects management except "its kind of hard to explain."

    Jesus Christ....the contradiction.....
If you want to look like more of an ass at my expense, do so. I'm sure the others will enjoy the show.

    ouch?

The commisioner works for the owners. The owners own the league. Research this before I have to write anther thesis or something. You are wrong, but you suggestion to fix matters is useless as well. All in all, I think a hear a cd on repeat of only Homer Simpson.

Why draft a player just to trade him, your exception (and one other one I'm sure you aren't even privy to). Becks is like every other Euro, I does matter what team. Sometimes options are limited, but everyone has a preference. The absurdity. Why?

Sure the USA has three main sports, but revenue isn't exactly split. I'm sure you have cross consumers. And of course they only get revenue from the USA. NFL Europa isn't in the least bit international. The NBA isn't played in Brazil or Serbia just Compton and Tobacco Road. And baseball...that died in Asia just like the Japanese after the Enola Gay paid a visit. That's sarcasm kid. Obviously, the 3 big US sports have at least a niche in the globalized sporting world.

Everything you said? Plus the revision that guy provided? It's apples and oranges, stick with Flintstone's vitamins. Red Wilma get you high. As you siad, if you are in a hole....

    I'll be here all day.

Not likely to have much more good on this... It ran its course and was off the original topic within two pages anyway.

    Odd, but interesting discussion folks.

With a franchise system, minor league teams are the equivalent of lower division teams in a promotion system. You complain that for instance Blackburn can't win the league. In the American system, Blackburn wouldn't be in the league at all, they'd be in the third level of the minor league, a reserve team. For a Blackburn fan I don't see how that's a good thing.

    We thought it was over...

And then the craziness comes back.

How are minor league teams like 2nd and 3rd division teams?

    Look at the comparissons:

-MLS players start at minor league, move through minor league to the major league team.
-Every major league team has minor league teams associated directly with it.
-No minor league team is associated with more than one pro team
-Rosters are fluid, a player can play for minor league AA team today, MLB tomorrow, AAA the next day, etc.
-Injured MLB players have rehab starts at AA and AAA level. When Roger Clemens came back last season, for example, he made one start at each of the A, AA, and AAA teams before coming to the MLB.

    Just a few things there...

Sure as heck looks a lot like the reserve and youth squads for premiership teams.

And why would Blackburn be in the third division? They're a top 6-7 club in the premiereship performance-wise. How would that put them in the third division?

I could see if you make an argument that the club would never be formed if you were starting over based on the population, attendance, and resources...

But that is marking the club to a specific town, which we don't really do here. I mean, so those people in Blackburn specifically won't have a team maybe. But wherever we do put teams, those fans will have a chance to see a winner, even if they're one of the smaller markets.

And the fans in our metaphorical Blackburn? They won't be fans of the Blackburn AA team... they'd be a fan of the nearest big professional team and that is their club... who could very will win the championship. Or maybe they'd like a team 1000 miles away. One of my teams plays in New York, one in Miami, one in Talahasee, one in Chicago, one here in Maryland, just goign through a few different sports.

We don't have this direct connection between my town and a team that plays here... We couldn't or else we'd have a league of 10,000 teams.

Just the same... don't use it as a crutch to say that each team has the "possibility" to win it. That's sort of like saying that anyone over 35 can be President of the USA. Sure it's legally possible, if you get through all the processes it could happen. But it ignores the likelihood of getting through all of those processes. If your local town team isn't even fully professional yet is inside the FA football pyramid and it has a chance to win... it doesn't have a chance to win. It's just part of the damn pyramid. A bit of realism is necessary.
