What are the thoughts out there on becks becoming an owner of an existing or expansion team in MLS when he hangs up his boots?

I think it would be great for him because:

1-it would give him a place to invest some of his money, and see the dividends of his time spent over here building the game
2-it will keep him involved in the game past his playing years
3-his celebrity status will keep the spotlight on MLS even though he would no longer be a player

I personally think its a win-win for MLS and for Becks!

i mean a sole/full team owner, he has the $!

I think he should invest in the 2nd NY team, a big market that he and Posh seem to like to spend time in!

No he doesn't. He probably has around the same money as Checketts, and Checketts needed other partners.

He COULD buy an existing team in an existing market with a stadium already in place. Like LA.

He could NOT start a new club without significant help, especially in building a stadium.

That said, I think it's a great idea. I welcome our new ant overlords.

Why not just get a group of soccer legends such as Pele, Beckenbauer, who have played in New York before to own the 2nd New York team when the time comes?

By that time Red Bull will already be established and hopefully competing well in the league. This 2nd NY team will have instant credibility because of the big names that are part of the ownership group and hopefully an exciting derby comes out of it.

I think you'd be surprised at how much money that kind of thing takes. It gives you a whole new perspective on just how much money Anshultz has at his disposal.

Cruise probably has a lot of his money tied up in his new UA venture.

If he ever bought a team, I can't see it being any city other than LA. Either way, he'll probably get more hands on with the youth programs there anyway.

LA or the 2nd NY team would be a good media fit for him

I'm sure after he gets used to LA, he may not want to leave. Would AEG/Gals or Vergara/Chivas USA sell him their club? Where else would he live other than LA? Maybe Las Vegas? I guess he could always live in LA and with the money he will be making, he can pay for an expansion fee, build an SSS somewhere else. Its true, he doesn't have the money right now, but in 5 years time, it will be pocket change for him.

I think coach would be a more feasible title. Beckham is "millions" rich, but he's not "billions" rich, is he? He should just continue the Gretzky approach that he's been following since January 11.

  16. I could see him in an ownership group situation. As others have stated, you need to probably be in more of the billionaire range to own a team on your own.

Not too many great players make it as coach in any sport. They usually say that they can't hold a job more than 3-5 years unless they are Sir Alex. I think owner would be better for Becks.

The Times came out with their rich list, Becks is worth $224 million, add another 5 years years of growth, and he could easily be a team owner!!

"Mr Beckham, who has signed a five-year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team, has seen his fortune grow by £25m, to £112m."

I thought getting his own team was in his contract. If he is successful over the term of the contract, that he gets his own team.

Beckham was quoted as saying last year:

"Without a doubt, I always said that I wouldn't go into management. What interests me is the academy and teaching kids. I have always loved being around children."

In the Guardian (U.K.), he said:

"Club management is not for me, but I love coaching and working with children..."

So Becks luv da kids, that's okay too. And according to VH1, Becks and Victoria are worth $100 million, and that was before he signed his current contract. He pulled down $33 mil from '04-'05 alone.

Management = front office day to day work & operations

Ownership: you sit in your personal "owners" box with your good looking wife, wave to fans, and watch as your teams value increase as the years go by...he wont be a general manager or coach, but he should be an OWNER!

in the context he was using though, he was saying he wouldn't be a manager - as in team manager (or head coach over there) - not that he wouldn't run a club.

Not that I suspect he would run a club. Running a bath is probably enough of a mental challenge for Beckham.

You are talking about a guy without pace, without strong tackling skills and really only a one trick pony (granted a fantastic trick) who has becoming a singlar icon of the game. He has turned that one skill into an empire that spans the global. His business acument in nothing short of brilliant.

Thats what i dont understand.. yeah becks is worth like 100 million and probolly like 500 million after his contract with MLS runs out, but what the hell do you do with all that money? buying a team for 30 million and then working at getting a local group / city to help you finance a stadium really doesnt seam like its "all" that much money. I mean theres a salary cap of 2 million.. paying your execs and other assorted stuff cant be much more than say 2 million a year maybe 3 at most.. so total of 5 million a year in expenses.. maybe 6 or 7 regardless, if you have like 500 million you could concievably run a team for like 30 years and still have enough money and be extremely comfortable the rest of your life, and thats if you never made another dime.

Seeing how most teams that own there own stadiums are pretty damn close to the black they arent losing all that much money. im not sure if they add in all the payroll behind the scenes and such into that, but if they are.. you would eventually make your money back and of course a team is like real estate the value really doesnt go down.

Now here is my question.. if each team is worth atleast 30 million, wouldnt all the initial investors already have made there initial investment back in terms of what the hell is that word.. where you own something with x amount of value? basically they have lost money over the course of 12 years, but if they paid 10 million to start up the league and there team is worth 30.. say they lost 1 million a year they still have made 8 million. ok im babbling ehhe.

masterK, your right, teams are similar to real estate as an asset, you dont necessarily make big year to year operating profits from them, but the value of the team goes up over time.

And yes, Becks has the money to buy the franchise, and build a stadium for them, and no he doesnt need to pay all cash, just like most people dont pay all cash for a house, he can put down 20%, and finance the rest 80% from a bank at a low fixed interest rate...not very complicated.

And, in the end, Becks will need something to invest his $ in, so why not an MLS team!
