Did anybody listen to the Jim Rome show today? I caught most of it, except for the listeners responses on Waldo apologizing to Jim Rome. Apparently Waldo made a comment about Rome to I'm not exactly sure (I think some soccer fan), about clubbing Rome. How Rome got word of it, I don't know either. But Waldo called the show and told Rome, he didn't really mean it, and that he said it in jokingly fashion. He also told Rome he knows he doesn't like soccer and he can understand that sometimes himself. And he said it's good that he talks bad about soccer. Another words, he totally kissed Rome's *ss and made a sincere apology and said what he did is not as bad as Pacman Jones (football player) and begged for Rome's forgiveness. He said he felt real bad, and just wants this behind him. Rome acted tough and was saying things like "Eric is this true", but in the end forgave him. He said they are still friends. Friends! I didn't know they were friends in the first place. I only knew Rome like's Eric's controversial comments about soccer, and soccer players. What do you guys think about all this. I personally think Waldo sold out. Anyway, if anybody listened to this, maybe you can add some more information on this event that took place today.

It's called being a grown-up. When you say something stupid, you take responsibility.

I agree, but it was they way he apoligized. I would have apoligized, but at the same time tell Rome stop bashing soccer so much.

  4. It's an act people. Eric calls the show every time Romey van Smack lays into soccer.

"No Eric, this not an excuse to call in on the hotline!"

Come on now we all know Waldo ment it! and I for one am happy he said it. Why cant Idiots like Rome just leave the game alone , if you dont like then just dont talk about it period! I have a feeling some one made Waldo say he is sorry we all know he is not. Its not like soccer fans are bashing other sports we are all American and like othere sports as well, its just happens that many of choose soccer first.

WOw I always thought Wynalda was an alright guy, a bit of an ass during the cup, but alright. But after reading that ( I go for Mexico by the way) Wynalda is the Man! The US Federation needs more Waldos in there.

I think when you work on the same network you kind of have to apologize. I still think it was great that Waldo ripped Rome. If anyone read the whole article they would see how passionate this guy really is about soccer in the U.S. He actually made a lot of sense.

It is interesting to know that Wynalda hates something else other than anything involving Chivas USA ;)

Eric Wynalda is EXACTLY what soccer in the United States needs right now--a loud, galvanizing, opinionated, charistmatic commentator who's completely fearless. I laughed out loud at his comment about Freddy Adu and getting fired for it.

I loved Eric Wynalda as a player, and I still love him today as an announcer/commentator/pundit. Sure, a lot of the stuff he says pisses me off, and a lot of the stuff he says I think are right on, but the bottom line is that he's exactly what we need from a media analyst standpoint to get attention to the game and to galvanize fans.

Given that, he probably ought to use a bit more tact before telling a colleague to suck his ****. Even if I do hate Jim Rome (which I do), that still is highly uncouth.

Is this not proof that Rome has his goons monitor these boards? After all, how the hell else would that get out in public circulation (so quickly?)

To me, Rome is sad if he needs to monitor these boards. Even if its just fans- that he even pays attention is laughable.

I was considering changing my name to Eric Wynalda after reading what he said. But after giving in to the hotair-filled douche-silo, I'm having second thoughts

Rome says "given who he is and who he works for. He should know better not to say it". What a f'in hypocrite. Has Rome forgotten the Chris Everett incident.

Well I'm considering changing my Bigsoccer Board name, after hearing Waldo bow down to the pimp in the box.

Waldo has been going on Rome's show for years.
Usually Waldo calls in to try and stick up for soccer and make a valid point about the random soccer blip in the news, but Rome usually lays into the sport really hard and Waldo has to just take it.
And it is shtick, no doubt.
This latest thing has been turned into a "bit" as well.
Not a big deal, sooner or later Wynalda was going to respond.
Besides, Rome flames soccer because he loves the response it gets and this is probably no exception - heck, it may have been orchestrated by ESPN to stir up some controversy pre-MLS season.

As we all know, Rome's own kids play soccer, he's been to games and he acknowledged being proud of his alma-mater winning the college soccer championship.

He did the same thing to NASCAR for a good decade until the sport got too popular to flame and now he loves it.

BTW, Rome is about 5 ft 5 - an absolute midget even compared to waif-like soccer players.

You bring up some good points. He didn't like hockey either until Wayne Gretzky came to L.A. and started going to his show. Then suddenly he is a hockey fan. Same thing with the point you brought up with NASCAR. He now claims to watch it from beginning to end, as the cars go round & round the track. This all adds up to he is what you call a POSER.

This whole thing is nothing but a cheesey PR stunt. I can't believe no one thinks this "apology" stuff is as weak as i do. Why must Eric Wynalda continue to make such an ass of himself?

It was a pretty watery apology but hey whatever, Eric did what he had to do, put yourself in the same position, it was all he could do. To use Rome vernacular he "manned" up for it. Personally I'm still glad Eric said what he said about Rome in the first place, even though you know it won't mean a damn to Rome in terms of his behavior on air.

Waldo shouldn't have said what he said, but he also shouldn't have backed down and kissed Rome's ass the way that he did. I think we all know that Waldo got a few bottles of truth serum into him before he spouted off, so for him to come on the jungle and say that he "didn't mean it" is disingenuous and a little cowardly. He had a chance to come on and say that he may have used the wrong words, but that the sentiment still holds true. What Rome says about soccer and soccer players is false, sophomoric, and idiotic. Why should he not be held accountable for perpetuating negative stereotypes and breeding contempt for the sport among the sheep that listen and hang on his every word? F**k Jim Rome and his clones. And a big "thumbs down" to Waldo for blowing an opportunity to nut up and put Rome in his place.
