    Wizards In The Community

A number of Wizards players will be out and about in the greater Kansas City community this weekend, highlighted by defender Jimmy Conrad's participation with the Kansas Special Olympics Awards Gala in Olathe. On Saturday, September 16th, Conrad will be helping recognize the athletes who be competing in the Kansas Special Olympics' state soccer tournament earlier that day. The Gala will be held at the American Legion in Olathe at 410 East Dennis Avenue. Earlier in the day a trio of Wizards will be out at various soccer competitions. Lance Watson will be signing autographs at the Southern Platte County Athletic Association games at Tiffany Springs Park from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Defender Tyson Wahl will be doing the same at the Western Missouri Soccer League's complex in the Northland from 12:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. And veteran Sasha Victorine will be greeting fans at Raytown Soccer Club's Tournament In The Woods at the Raytown Soccer Fields from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

    These guys are so cool.

I volunteered to assist with the Special Olympics for the first time last spring. What a wonderful experience. Conrad just earned an even greater measure of respect from me for helping out at that event. What a guy.

In conjunction with Blue Cross Blue Shield and The National Kidney Foundation, the Kansas City Wizards are sponsoring Training & Nutrition Week for the week of September 11th through 15th. Over 15,000 students in the Kansas City area are participating in the program in over 750 classrooms. The focus of the program is to give young children an introduction to healthy behaviors that they can incorporate in their everyday lives. Each classroom was given a poster that outlines nutrition, training, and take-home tasks for every day of the week that are designed to promote healthy behaviors. For participating in the program every student will be awarded two complimentary tickets to experience the Wizards' match against ReAL Salt Lake on Saturday, September 30th thanks to Blue Cross Blue Shield and The National Kidney Foundation.

Headlines for the week of March 5, 2007:

    GET CLOSE Events
The Kansas City Wizards have several exciting events coming up designed to allow fans to GET CLOSE to the players and staff of Kansas City's soccer club. The technical side of the organization is in Argentina training until March 22. Upon the team's return to the States, there will be many chances for fans to see the players before the season starts April 14 at D.C. United.

March 24 - The Kansas City Wizards and Harrah's North Kansas City Casino will throw an exclusive kick-off party for players and fans at VooDoo Lounge. VIPs, including season ticket holders and other invitees, will begin arriving at 7 p.m. and will have a chance to mingle with the players and staff. Doors open to the general public at 8 p.m.

VooDoo Lounge and the Wizards are bringing in well-known San Francsico-based DJ Fashen for the event, and Go-Go Dancers will perform throughout the evening. Voice of the Wizards Sean Wheelock will emcee the event and introduce each player individually on stage. Contests and giveaways will be offered, with a grand-prize drawing at midnight for the chance to be a VIP guest at the Sept. 27 match against David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

April 5 - The Wizards are looking for a theme song to play at home games, and we need your help. On April 5, Wizards players will be at Blonde on the Plaza, where Kansas City's premier DJs will compete against each other for the top spot and the chance to play their winning song at Wizards home games and to perform live at various Wizards functions. Don't miss out on this exclusive opportunity to hang out with your favorite Wizards players and help choose the Wizards new theme song.

April 6 - The Kansas City Wizards will be at Fuel at 119th and Metcalf for happy hour from 4-6 p.m. Drink specials and contests will highlight the evening. In addition, Mix 93.3 and Fuel will offer $1 hamburgers and the Wizards will hold a soccer trivia contest and team personality scavenger hunt.

Well, this Wizards function does not start until 7:00 pm. So, you come to the meet-n-greet for a few hours, then head to the casino for the Wizards function.

Now come on...why would you have a song with instruments when you could have a guy spinning someone else's music on a couple of turntables? <shudder>. I'd personally like to hear something like the Bouncing Souls "Here We Go" blasting through the loudspeakers but then I'm obviously not the Wizards target demo.
