... and Sha Tin Race Course is the only thing on the agenda so far. Any thoughts (especially regarding food)?

I spent almost two months in Hong Kong and LOVED it. It's my second favourite place in the world. Brilliant shopping, brilliant food, everywhere. If it's just the day you're spending there, I would just go spend it in Kowloon or alternatively on the island and bring a number of credit cards to go shopping. If you want the day to be relaxing, take a taxi or the tram to the Peak, from where you have stunning views over Hong Kong and there's also a pretty decent restaurant up there, and then spend the afternoon at nearby Stanley, which is only a tiny area but it has the atmosphere of a European seaside resort with its bars and restaurants and (tiny) beach.

I spent five days in HK pre-handover (that'll tell you how long it's been) and found the Kowloon / NT side a lot more interesting for walking around than HK Island. A couple of very quick ideas:

    -- Star Ferry at night.
    -- Temple Street Night Market.
-- Get yourself a tailored suit or shirt at the Burlington Arcade on Nathan Road.
-- Take the escalators up to the Mid-Levels.

Here's a pretty good walking tour.

I did that. Get a few shirts, I've always regretted only getting one.

If you're gonna go up the Peak, take the cable car.

Dim Sum (for brunch, I think) seems to be the/ HK meal.

You'll be hard pressed to find a more materialistic city, shopping is one of the main things to do in HK.

What do you have in mind? Nightclub? Sightseeing? Eating?

The last two, since I've already figured out the gambling part. My dad and I are there together.

My suggestions: I am assuming it is a Sunday since it is a race day.

    Morning
    1) Take the Star Ferry to central: They recently removed the pier. The old one offers a sightseeing ride that takes you around the harbour. Take the sightseeing trip. If not, take the regular ferry. If you live in the HK side, just do a round trip.

    2) In Central, head to City Hall for a dim sum brunch. They have a gigiantic dim sum restarant called Maxim. They do not take booking so it is first come first served. Be prepared for 30 minutes wait if you arrive late. President Clinton made a visit there. He just showed up one day.

    3) Headed to Shatin racetrack(I do not know how you are getting there).

    4) After the race, head to Tsim Sha Tsui or Casueway Bay for shopping. It will depend on what you are looking for. I am not familiar with tailored-man shirts. I know Ascot Chang in Prince Building, Central is world famous. This is where Bush Sr. sent his staffs to get his shirts.

    5) Dinner: A few suggestions
-- head to Yung Kee inj Central. Try their roost duck or pork. Their goose liver sausages are nice. They used "foie gras" to make Chinese sausages. A combination of french and Chinese cuisine.

-- Or head straight to the Peak for dinner. Take the Peak train(ask the hotel for operating hours). Eat at Cafe Deco(need booking). If you want Chinese, try the Zen below.

    * Reminder Hong Kong is one of five most expensive cities in the world. A few of my American friends got big surprises when the bills come. So expect the dinner to be liked you are in Paris or New York. This is not your Third World Asian country. The restarants I mentioned are expensive. USD40 or above per person.

    6) After dinner: Lan Kwei Fong for bar hopping. If you are on a Sunday, it will be quiet.

Surprisingly, it's a raceday in midweek.

Peking Garden is excellent, very pricey but if you're just there for a day you may be willing to splurge. Try the Beggar's chicken (I think you have to call 24 hours in advance). It's in the big shopping mall next to the Star Ferry terminal, in Tsim Shat Sui IIRC.
