A good read whether you like Apple or not and whether you plan on getting a iPhone or not.

I haven't had any problems with Cingular's service. Their customer service, yeah, but never their actual cell phone service.

I was about to order a Samsung Blackjack today, but looks like that's getting nixed.

Do you have an older Macbook? My Core 2 Duo version released in November runs much more coolly than the first release. I could cook dinner on my old Dell Pentium 4 notebook.

And I'm not sure if the Macbook can be compared to the iPhone as far as heat is concerned.

I'm guessing they just want to get a bunch out in the US market before launching for real in Europe and Asia, where you can't compete if you're not 3G.
I think Motofone, a.k.a "dumb phone", is more or less what you're looking for:

Stunningly overwrought explanation for a stunningly simple phone: http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/motofone/experience/experience/index.html

    Edit:
oops, Achtung beat me to it. Still, it's a long overdue idea.

I also just read in the article above that Cingular is not yet 3g anyway (one more strike against them), so coming out with a 3g phone would have effectively been producing an under utilized product.

I hope they bring out an ipod like that without the phone part. iPhone is so cool though!!!

They've been battling in court over it for some time (Cisco had it, Apple wanted it). Now Cisco is suing Apple for the actual infringement. Apparently Cisco offered a deal and Apple has yet to sign the paperwork agreeing to that deal.

The brand name may have to be changed to Apple Phone. From today's WSJ:

Yesterday afternoon, the litigation-happy Law Blog registered disappointment over the fact that Apple and Cisco appeared to be on the verge of an agreement over the iPhone name. (Cisco has owned the rights to the name dating back to 2000; Apple unveiled its long-awaited tricked-up cell phone yesterday.)

Well, turns out, news of an agreement appears to have been a bit premature. Cisco today announced that it has filed a lawsuit in federal court in California against Apple, seeking to prevent Apple “from infringing upon and deliberately copying and using Cisco’s registered iPhone trademark.” Here’s a link to the story by the WSJ’s Nick Wingfield and Don Clark.

“Cisco entered into negotiations with Apple in good faith after Apple repeatedly asked permission to use Cisco’s iPhone name,” said Mark Chandler, senior vice president and general counsel, Cisco. “There is no doubt that Apple’s new phone is very exciting, but they should not be using our trademark without our permission.” With its lawsuit, Cisco is seeking injunctive relief to prevent Apple from copying Cisco’s iPhone trademark.”

that's what I'm waiting for. A widescreen touch-screen iPod. Surely (hopefully) before the year ends. Probably right in time for the holidays.

For $499 I'll pass. Never run out and get the first version of a product. Wait for the second version. Trust me on this.

I wouldn't - I'd wait until the price comes down and they work out any kinks.

IIRC, when the Razr first came out, it was priced something ridiculous and required a Cingular contract. Now, it's free with a new plan on pretty much every non-Sprint carrier.

Not that I expect the iPhone to become a freebie, but by 2008, it'll be competitively priced vs Blackberry/Treo and/or available unlocked. And hopefully by then, US carriers will have upgraded to 3G and support visual voice mail.

Now with firmware updates on wi-fi and USB enabled devices, there's little point in waiting. Any kinks are usually worked out in subsequent updates. Hardware problems are the exception.

exactly...much like the PS3 not reading and crashing with PS2 games. They made an update available to download and problem fixed.

Just a heads up for those of you interested in purchasing the iPhone - It isn't widescreen.
