I was just throwing around a few ideas on how there could be a single device on how to listen to music and talk without changing devices.

I think you have to pay $6 per month if you want to talk overseas - TMobiles does it for free. I've had Cingular for a year a while ago, and really didn't like it. The service was poor in many areas, customer service stunk, the plans weren't that great either. Don't have any such complains about TMobile - it works great both internationally and at home, never had any dropped calls, excellent connection wherever I go.
Bu Cingular gets all the cool phones

Used it recently? - I think did some big merge so their service issues aren't as big.

Oh right - T-Mobile is also probably cheaper - but doesn't it have service issues? Especially outside of cities?

i hate cingular becuase they screwed my contract up from the get-go and then made me jump through hoops for a month to get it resolved. one of the worst customer service experiences from start to finish i ever had. the only good thing they did was cancel the contract. vowed not to do business with them again.

    but that's just mme ....

OK, after watching Jobs' iPhone presentation, I have to say that it's far more impressive than I imagined. (And a 3G model is on its way for those who are wondering.) The interface is simply wicked. It's like having OS X in your palm.

    Definitely getting one.

I'm with Cingular and I'm actually interested in what the phone does besides the ipod thing. I already have a 60gb video iPod so I don't need another one. Ugh oh well.

In the boondocks where other services lack coverage as well, yes. I've had T-Mobile since it was VoiceStream (going on six years now) and the only times I've found myself completely without coverage, no one else seemed to have it either.

I laughed when I saw this. Once they've duped all of the suckers who go and immediately buy a 2g, they'll make a killing on upgrades. That's the Apple business model to a T (that is both a compliment and slam btw).

I mentioned this in a thread a few months ago about an ideal handheld. Aside form flash memory it seems I was pretty close.

The GPS system is absolutely killer.

I am trying to determine what version of OS-X this iPhone device runs (must be modified kernal of Unix so as to run Safari browser) and if so that iPhone is going to be one hot unit without a heat sink...I mean... hot enough to not be able to use it? How Apple solves that riddle will be very interesting (those with MacBooks will know what I mean by heat generation)... Perhaps that's why delivery will be late June... they more than likely haven't solved the heat issue....

I have Sprint and I've had a lot fewer coverage issues than my girlfriend, who has T-Mobile. For instance in the Adirondacks I had good coverage. And oddly enough I was one of the few who had coverage in Puerto Vallarta.

You know, I'm waiting for a forward-thinking company to produce a really sleek-looking mobile with the following functions (and nothing else): a phone, caller ID, and voice mail. It could be called "Phone" or, perhaps, "Fone."

Now let’s talk about cell phones. I’m going out on a limb with this one. You’ll start seeing a backlash against all the multifunction telephones and see the desire for a really nice phone that is just a phone. I’m not alone in wanting a high-quality cell phone that specializes in, well, being a phone. Every week, I get at least one or two e-mails from people looking for a first-class cell phone without a camera, an MP3 player or the flash and glitter that adorn so many these days. These folks want a phone with great battery life, terrific reception and no frills. The market will respond, I’m guessing.

You're not the only one with that wish.

Other than the kiddie phones such as FireFly, there's really nothing that's just a basic phone/text/voice mail machine.

I've heard that many "cross-over units" that can play music, wireless internet, phones, GPS, etc. are either great on the "non-phone" side and have room for improvement on the phone side, or are great phones with crappy MP3 players.

I've made phone calls to my neighbor's Q and have been able to hear what I say a few seconds after I say it. I had to hold the phone so my ear wasn't on the ear piece as I was talking to him and then move my phone so I could hear him.

    Interesting. ;)

But anyways, the iPhone or whatever its called definitely looks cool, but with not much in the way of space for media (I always figured the eventual widescreen iPod would have a large HD for movies and TV), plus a relatively high price even with a two-year contract, I'll have to sit out on the first iteration. It's a good idea, but it comes up just short for me. For now, I'll go with a separate phone plus my 30 GB iPod.

On the other hand, I'm intrigued more by the AppleTV, though I wonder what picture quality would be like. Obviously Apple offers a lot of high-def content on its website which Jobs demonstrated yesterday. But for video obtained through, um, "alternate channels", I wonder how good it would look. If they got it right, the thought of Match of the Day, Doctor Who, and Top Gear on my plasma could be reality. :)

Obviously I have no issues in the Chicago area, but I've seen good coverage in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, California, Florida, South Carolina, and probably another dozen states where I've driven through on the highway where one is most likely to have reception. In the states above I've been in cities, towns, and bumble**** and had no issues.

From all that I've read where you are with a particular carrier tends to present the biggest challenges to reception.

I've been calling for a phone like this for the last two years. I've even written letters to Motorola and Nokia just so I can say I've done more than talk.

I would love a small(ish) phone that is solidly built with good antennae reception, strong volume, a easy-to-use phone book that isn't necessarily lacking features, caller ID, good battery life, a calendar, GPS, a speakerphone and bluetooth. Shoot, the calendar, GPS, and bluetooth would be bonuses.

I agree that one day (hopefully soon) we'll see something on the market, but I'm not that hopeful we'll see it before 2009.

I'm not sure I totally get the just a phone joke (adding GPS isn't just a phone), but there are lots of decent just phones out there. But I can't imagine not having some kind of synching option because when you lose your phone, reprogramming numbers and addresses and calendar really sucks.

And since I use a palm and an ipod, having to synch and charge multiple devices is a drag - if you are so basic that you just want a phone, may I suggest:

Well - someone else I know said they think Cingular sucks, so what do I know. I do think Sprint has a wider range of service than T-Mobile, although it has it's own problems.
