I may not have the same deducing skills as some as of you, but I could not for the life of me come to the same conclusion. Nowhere does the article mention Gold Cup, much less mentioning that a lesser team will be fielded. What I deduced from the article is that Mexico will have an easier time scheduling friendlies ( I expect Mexico will be going to europe more often), and there will be a better lines of communication with the front office and coaching staff.

I agree that it doesn't mention the Gold Cup but if you read between the lines if everything is pointing towards the Copa America. Then the Gold Cup isn't as important for one and that Mexico can't bring the same team to both tournaments.

"Es una grata sorpresa para todos la excelente química que existe entre Hugo y los miembros de la Federación, así como con los dueños de clubes, que al fin y al cabo lo eligieron de manera unánime. Nos pondremos todos a trabajar para hacer una gran Copa América."

The fact that he doesnt even speak of the gold cup speaks volumes of the pecking order.

same thought. We have enough players to make two National Teams. The only question would be 'who goes where?'

I always thought of the Copa America as a priority, but something I was reading about the US got me thinking. Copa America is a higher level competition, and would bring more prestige, but winning the Copa de Oro is a must, and would qualify us to the Confederations Cup. Normally, I would say take our top squad to Venezuela, and a younger squad to the Copa de Oro (or maybe a combined squad to each?). We should have enough talent to field that second competitive team, especially since our main rival would be the US faced by the same problem. Then I started to think of Hugo's comment that 1 game in Europe is worth 30 here (or whatever he said). Does our top team, for instance Pardo/Salcido/Marquez, really need the "roce internacional" they would get from playing the Copa America? They get that in Europe every day. I would argue it's more valuable to bring several young players to Venezuela, both for the experience and to encourage their transfer to Europe. I might even argue take Ochoa to Venezuela.:D

Of course, that's the short run - long run tradeoff that Hugo faces. Take your best team to win every tournament or build towards a 4 year goal.

Heres my two cents we already been to the confederations cup we faced Brazil and Argentina and beaten japan and Greece the world already knows what we can do, aside from that the confederationa cup is not that important to me. I think it's time for the seleccion Mexicana to win the south american tournament known as copa america seems like Argentina and Brazil are always the champions, Mexico has the firepower to win copa america now!! look at Chivas an all fielded Mexican club alomost won Copa libertadores a year ago well this is the Mexican seleccion our best meaning Si se puede!! Now is the time to take the goal and this is out year I know and feel it south america fears Mexico they know we can conquer and we have Hugo as our guide he will feed it into our players head trust me you will see a new and improved team out their. Besides we all know Mexico qualifies all the time for the world cup so do we really care about winning the confederation cup more than winning the Copa America??

Well the CONFED Cup is important because you get to play at least 3 games in WC stadiums and maybe build a following. It seems like EL Tri gained many new German fans after the 2005 Confed Cup and it continued to grow at the 2006 WC.

    P.S.

Argentina last won the Copa America in 93.

Wow Mosco! I totally agree, we should definitely go after the Copa America. It's a title he don't have yet and if we were to win it would really grab the world's attention. With that attention some of our boys might get offers from Europe. I just wish you could ease up on your Chivas rants when talking about La Seleccion.

true but Mexico didn't win the world cup of 2006 it would be easier for Mexico to win the Copa america something they have never did that way it puts them on the map and gets Mexico some respect from south america. Italy didn't make it to the confederationas cup 2005 but yet they won the world cup Mexico seems to come short of these tournaments. Thats why I say it would be better to win Copa America for the base root.

I want to win the Copa America, but I am perfectly happy with a semifinal spot if it means we get to showcase young talent and send them off to Europe to gain experience.

The last few Copa America winners and their subsequent World Cup
    results-
1993 Argentina, lost in 2nd round of 1994 WC
    1995 Uruguay, didn't qualify to 1998 WC
1997 Brazil, lost final of 1998 WC
    1999 Brazil, won 2002 WC
    2001 Colombia, didn't qualify to 2002 WC
2004 Brazil, lost in quarterfinals of 2006 WC

So unless you are Brazil, winning the Copa America doesn't mean much for your next World Cup. The same for Europe-

    1992 Denmark, didn't qualify to 1994 WC
1996 Germany, quarterfinals in 1998 WC
    2000 France, 1st round in 2002 WC
    2004 Greece, didn't qualify to 2006 WC

And of course, winning the Gold Cup doesn't mean much in this sense either. I am not saying lose on purpose, but we don't have to win it all to earn respect. We've done enough in Copa America and the Conmebol club tourneys to get respect. And more so now with Pachuca's victory. If teams underestimate us, that's their own problem. I'd rather build towards winning the World Cup. Ok, a title might be a little farfetched still, but aiming only for a "quinto partido" is ridiculous. Anyway, Hugo will probably take a stronger team to Copa America, but our goal should be in the WC, not a Copa America.

Sorry about the rant. I think intermediate goals are a good measuring stick, but I don't want to lose sight of the ultimate goal.
    :D
