No he wasn't but you're right, consider him thrown into the mix of players I listed earlier.

    This is just ridiculous.

Eboue's defending is massively suspect. He makes too many mistakes and gets caught out of position regularly.

His attacking is certainly not the best in the world.

He isn't even in the top 3 right backs in the Premiership.

Alright, Neville gives most of United assists down the right wing, and is probably the best right back, United and England have seen, jealousy....

OMG,no sagnol in the choices. He's the best-right back in the world and....
Anyway i realized he's the man who's been leading.12 votes for the other(sagnol)
Otherwise this poll must be for the 2nd best right-back in the world. He was one of the most consistent performers from the french team in the WC and if zidane would have scored from his cross and france won the final then we would have seen sagnol in the nominations instead of zambo

I agree with everything you said. In the mix. But the best at the World Cup was clearly Zambrotta. He had an outstanding tournament.

I agree to an extent about his defending, but in my opinion no one comes close in attack. He has skill, pace, and his crosses are lethal. How often does Henry score a header? Eboue threaded the needle twice for Henry header goals this season. If Arsenal had someone that was good in the air, there would be countless goals off Eboue crosses.

Javier Zanetti is probably the only Inter player I respect. The guy just never stops running and giving 110%, he's like a robot. Too bad he's playing for the wrong team in Milan...

He's one of those players who I make sure I get when they retire and comeback in Winning Eleven/PES.

Zanetti has to be one of the most complete fullbacks in the world, if not THE most complete. Stronger than most, as quick as most, and technically sound, as well as mentally. His awareness if also amazing. I'd pick him over all of the above if going on pure ability in that position.

Yeah, come think of it , i prefer Zanetti too. He can play both sides as well. He always plays good. Too bad the Argies dont think that.

He is probably the biggest piece of crap called a RB I have ever seen. No wonder he plays for England. Most assists? Please don’t make me laugh dude. Wants next the most scoring RB ever for England and Man Utd?

I agree. Only a pile of crap would hold down a position at an elite club and a top 10 country for his entire career. It's clear you have a grudge against him so instead of spouting crap just tell us why you really hate him.

It is also RB though. If any position is going to be considered the easiest in English football to play... it is RB.

Any player who performs at the highest level for over a decade is a damn good player. Whether he plays right back, left back or centre forward makes no difference when you are comparing players of the same position.

Not to mention the fact that Neville started out, I believe, as a centreback. He's not the most dynamic, but his record of consistency is admirable.

    Re:

First off, the name of the thread is... "... Who is the best right back in the world? ...", which implies right now and not over ten years.

Second, right back IS the easiest position to play for anyone with defensive capability. The majority of the better attacking wingers, forwards and midfielders all favor their right-foot. Every week a left-back is at a premium b.c an opposing team is more likely to have a quality RM rather than a quality LM.

Football players don't grow up in their position. Their athletic abilities and skill dictate where they will play. Most players aren't very flexible and don't transfer well from position to position. However, some do. Rio Ferdinand grew up a CF, then became a MF, then a DF. You can never truly compare ONLY players of ONE position, when it comes to longevity. It is a comparison of footballers as a whole.

When judging athletes you judge all, regardless of position. A broad statement of quality over a lengthy period of time is open for all positions. People who analyze success football tend to break it up into positions for easier cross-referencing. You're not talking about success as a player, you're talking about consistency which fits into the first discussion of of all athletes.

English defenses tend to defend in a block of 4, even MUFC. The RB is not expected [not until recently] to be a relaible attacking force. Does a RB get forward? Yes. Has Neville responded to the increased demands of his position after the loss of Beckham? Yes. Does that make him the best RB in the world? No.

    Re:

And Gary Neville has been one of the best right backs around for each of the last 10 years. He might not have been the very best, but he has always been up there.

Who have been the best wingers in the English game over the past 10 years? Giggs, Overmars, Barnes, Ginola, Pires. Each one of them played for the most part on the left wing (granted Neville did not have to face Giggs).

Of course you can compare players of the same position based on a career. There have been countelss discussions on here about the best keeper, centre back, winger, striker etc.

For the vast majority of his career both for club and country Neville had Beckham playing in front of him. Beckham has been know, on occassion, to wander from the right wing and there has always been someone to pop up to cover or provide the overlap. That person has been Neville.

I can appreciate that a Liverpool fan may not be the most appreciative of Gary Neville (or any non Man Utd fan for that matter - he does little to endear himself to the general public), but if you actually go back and watch his performances objectively then you will see that he is and always has been a quality player. Not neccessarily the very best, but certainly up there and always among the most conisistant and committed.

This statement says it all right here.

Most consistant and committed does not make you the 3rd best rightback in the game today.

If anyone was taking this debate seriously, they would have Finnan up there. Considering he has had better recent seasons than Neville. Which is what this argument is about. It is right now -- not over ten years.

Finnan is a very good right back, but not as good as Neville. There is no non-Liverpool fan or non Irishman who would claim otherwise.

    Re:

That is a sad argument, considering you're not likely to find any non-Irish, non-Liverpool fans that follow Steve Finnan. Especially on these boards. Unlike the majority of football fans who only know of Neville because he plays for one of the most successful teams of the last decade.
