'Australia's AFC membership must be revoked'

An Arab backlash against Australia's inclusion in the Asian soccer confederation continued yesterday, with the head of Kuwait's Olympic Committee saying the membership should be revoked before qualifying starts for the 2010 World Cup or it will "kill Asian soccer".
    AP.

Shaikh Talah Al Fahd Al Sabah, president of the West Asian Games committee, echoed earlier comments by his brother Shaikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, the president of Olympic Council of Asia.
"We are against Australia joining the Asian continent, even in soccer," Shaikh Talah said. "This is the biggest mistake made against Asian soccer. This will kill the ambitions of Asian soccer."
Australia was granted membership of the Asian Football Confederation earlier this year after frustrating attempts at getting a direct route to the World Cup through Oceania.
Shaikh Talal envisaged no trouble removing Australia from the AFC. "It is natural to be able to change the decision. A general assembly can annul it the way it approved it," he told a news conference at the ongoing Asian Games in Doha.
"There are general assemblies that can ask them to leave the way they brought them in. I hope this happens before the World Cup qualifications."
Australia, after advancing via Oceania and beating two-time champion Uruguay in an intercontinental playoff for the last spot, reached the second round of the World Cup before losing on a last-minute penalty to eventual champion Italy.
The Australians are among the 16 qualifiers for the 2007 Asian Cup, which is being jointly hosted by Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam.
"What are we going to benefit from Australia's soccer team when it plays a game with Asia?" Shaikh Talah said.

maybe someone should tell him without australia no asian teams were in the final 16 on the world cup..

maybe he just upset that his team didnt get into the asian cup and we are taking a world cup spot away from them. instead of kicking people out why doesnt he just make his team stronger

The Kuwaitis should be grateful to us. Without us, they wouldn't have won a game in this years qualifiers.

They should be grateful to countries like Korea because we were always in this sad confederation and exposed higher level football to these countries.

Lol beat me to it. I think because we beat a whole bunch of Arab countries (i.e Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait e.t.c) they all want to have a cry, which they're really good at. The Sheik was also saying that countries in the Oceanic confederation like New Zealand would suffer because we left. Has anyone in Australia given any indication at all that they care about New Zealand football? Lol. What a poor reason to go back to Oceania. Who in their right mind would want to stay there if they were a better team anyway?

"What are we going to benefit from Australia's soccer team when it plays a game with Asia?" Shaikh Talah said.

Well for a start we would be introducing a relatively good and potentially powerful team into Asia, hailing from a country with a good economy and with strong economic ties to countries such as Japan and China (which would indirectly affect football for Australia). It would create stronger competition for both Australia and other countries and also give other asian countries a chance to play a team with a different style of play, which under Baan our new technical director will supposedly mean a more technical side in the long run.
Perhaps what the Sheik really means is, "What will it do for Kuwait" as opposed to "Asia".

Split the confederation from India eastward and from Pakistan westward. Let the new East Asian confederation keep 3.5 bids and let the new Middle Eastern confederation have 1.

Now way. If there's a split, it should be done evenly.
Top 5 teams in Asia (alphabetically): Australia, Iran, Japan , Saudi Arabia, South Korea. 2 from west 3 from east. That would give a split of 2 and 2 1/2.

of course not, what he said reflects his personal opinion and not all Kuwaitis' opinion... I guess you remember that the audience who attended the Australia match in Kuwait was quite big despite the bad weather which shows that Kuwaitis respect the Australian team and consider it to be among the best in Asia now... somehow, I consider that big attendance and most importantly the result as a warm welcome to Australia in Asia.

what makes it obvious that he was trying to get Bin Hammam and not Australia by his statements is that when he was asked if he felt that way about Australia because they "took" Kuwait's spot in the AC2007, he replied "no one took our spot from the AC, we lost it to Bahrain" then he elaborated; "we lost to Australia away and cancelled that result out at home, and our goal advantage did not count because we lost away to Bahrain... so, if you like, Bahrain deservedfully took our spot"

in the press-conference he was also asked about who is to blame for not qualifying to the AC2007, the journalist somehow put Australia's name in the question, as he knew that this is what's going to make the headlines and not the rest of the one-hour long conference... he replied; "we only have ourselves to blame, the Kuwaiti FA has lost the road map 5 years ago... Kuwaiti football has been living its worst days eversince the cuurent administration took control"

now that was considered to be unimportant by the jounalist who made the article... they make it look as if the man sat down only to speak about Australia's inclusion to the AFC, whereas this matter took less than 3 minutes to be concluded by him saying; "It is Australia and not Asia who benifited from that inclusion... Australia has a superior infrastructure to host any AFC competition than most Asian nations, countries like India and Yemen can never win a bid to host an AFC competition if Australia is interested, the AFC claims to be trying to develop football in these countries, but seems to be more interested in income, less than a year as an AFC member, Australia already hosted the 2006 AFC women's championship second stage"

he also added; "I might be against the inclusion of Australia to the AFC, but I am not against the merging of the AFC and the OFC, Australia leaving out the OFC will eventually kill the game in 16 nations and we don't want to do that just for the money."

He is a bit bitter though as Kuwait would have qualified if Australia was not in their group. AFC and OFC is merged this time anyway when the 1st team in Oceania will join the final qualifying stage of world cup 2010. Where is his opinion on that? Missing of course!
