To win the European Footballer Of The Year awarded by France Football you have to be European. Di Stefano and Sivori, despite being born in Argentina were both nationalised by their respective European countries (Spain and Italy) and subsequently represented them.

I believe this used to be the case, but was changed to include all those playing in European leagues sometime around 1994. I believe Weah and Ronaldo have won the award since that change.

I don't know why I stopped in 1980. The period '80-'90 sure is interesting as well.

Interesting to note, when Cruyff won, he won damn convincingly. Huge margin of points between him and second place.

    Thanks Gregoriak.

they changed it, now you only have to play in Europe. Ronaldo, Rivaldo,...

74 was pretty close between him and Beckenbauer, but 72 was beyond that - 2 points from 1st (Beckenbauer) to third and 6 more to 4th. 6 points got 6th place as well.
Di Stefano (57), Blokhin (75) and Rummenigge (80) look like the clearest winners.

    Why am I not surprised?

1960 does have an impressive list. Looking at the 1970 list, there's one of obvious reason on why Dzajic and Cryuff are lowly placed.

Even though that Dzajic was a star at Euro 68, I didn't expect the votes tally between Best, Charlton and him to be reasonably close.

    ;) [now we have it]

surprised to see Deyna in front of Lato. Thought Lato was THEIR man at the Wc

By the way, a part from 1972 from a German point of view, 1956 is my favoutite. You can't beat that:

Kazimierz Deyna (I love those Polish names) was the influential playmaker of that fancied Poland side, one of the best players of the tournament. Only Cruyff and Beckenbauer were more influential for their teams that year. Without Deyna, Grzegorz Lato and Andrzej Szarmach could not have scored as many goals as they did.

I'm surprised that in 1982, Giresse was rated higher than Platini. What made his performance better than Platini's?

Portugal's appearance really helped Chalana to score well. That guy wasn't that good.

The 1956 list is a great one like Pakalolo pointed out, with Ocwirk undoubtedly the most underrated player of that lot. The 1960 and 1961 lists are impressive also.
