From this week's Wizards Weekly Update:

"The Kansas City Wizards will switch their primary and secondary logos. The
primary logo now will be the shield with the words "Kansas City" displayed
in blue over a larger type "Wizards" in white. Here is the new primary logo:

i think we saw this coming after the last few weeks of the season. it's leaps and bounds better than the rainbow one, and will be fine for these couple of years while we make do. however, i expect them to style a new one to coincide with a new stadium.

Eh, I know a lot of people find/found the rainbow to be.. well, flaming, but I think this new design is rather drab. Too simple I think. Maybe I'll get used to it.

It's amazing to me how clueless people can actually be. I can find a better looking KC Wizards logo on bigsoccer in under 3 minutes. Why can't people who own MLS teams want their team/league to be better? Is it too much to ask for to have logos that look like a professional soccer team?

Folks, this logo has been around for years. Let's not act like it's a brand new logo.

Whatever you think of it, it's 100x better than the old one (and with none of the hassle of a full re-design).
I fully expect a full re-design at some point in the future.

And, I don't expect anything to change (as far as a full re-design) to happen until we move into our new stadium. This isn't a "new" logo, it's our 2nd being moved to primary.

It would be a smart marketing move to save any completely new logos for the opening of the SSS. No point in making any big changes right now while we play in a HS stadium.

I like it. I will buy a new jersey now. I can retire my 2000 jersey. I decided I would not buy another jersey with the rainbow on it.

My point is there is no massive amount of time, effort, or money required to find a better proffesional looking logo. You literally can find them on bigsoccer in about 5 minutes. Why wait to move stadiums to have something to help your team look better?

Actually yes they would take time, money, and effot because the team wouldn't use any of the logos on BS. They'd hire a design firm or whatever to get it done, not some random guy at his computer on an internet forum.

and if you're referring to the castle logos those are crap Everton rip offs.

There are some MLS licensing issues to consider with both a team name change and/or logo change.

IF (and it is only an IF) the team name is to change, it will likely happen in 2009 or 2010 when the team moves to a new stadium. Why? Re-branding goes hand in hand with the new stadium. Renaming the team would mean a new logo.

So the question is why create a new logo now when the team name will be changing in two to three years anyway.

It would cost several thousand dollars to completely change logos. They would hire a firm to do the design, file whatever copyrights are needed, change trademarks, file whatever is needed with the league, pay for everything from their office materials to clothing to be changed. It isnt as easy as you think. They already have things in this logo so this isnt a big change or really a change at all.

Well there is no law or MLS rule that says you HAVE to pay thousands of dollars to let a design firm design one. If I owned the team and started a "design the new Wizards Logo" campgain I could do it, nothing would stop me from doing it. And when I see logo's on BS that look better than the ones they supposedly paid thousands of dollars to get, why wouldn't I take this approach? If they want to change the name of the team later, then fine design a new logo at the time but there is no reason to not improve any aspect of your team and any given point in time.

And you actually believe that they wouldn't spend money on a new logo, that they'd just find some random logo online and use it? And like I said you may like the logos you see on BS, I personally have hated each new one. This new logo cost them ZERO, NOTHING, because it's not a new logo, it's the teams secondary logo, that's it. There is no purpose in creating a completely new logo when there is a possiblity of being re-branded when the stadium is built.

    But you don't

Except that you don't own the team.

The new owners paid zero dollars for the secondary logo

Because re-branding includes both the team name and a brand new logo -- together. That's what smart marketing people do. They create a brand. Name, logo and world class facility all rolled into one.

Do you really think they want a new name/logo associated with a High School stadium? Or do you think they would prefer it to be associated with a brand spanking new world class soccer specific stadium?

Be patient, two or three years, new name, new logo, new stadium.

In the interim we dump the horrible rainbow logo and go with the secondary logo as it is more palatable.

New logo, new stadium yes, but I would be pleasantly surprised if the team were renamed, based on their reactions the couple of times it was mentioned to them. Seemed to me like that had never really occurred to them. That could be because they don't see the need to or because they frankly are too busy right now to think much about branding. I have a feeling it would be so hard to get a consensus that they would just default back to Wizards anyway.

Have I mentioned that the name is beyond terrible to anyone on these boards? Just checking.

Maybe someone could list the positives of keeping the name? All I seem to be able to come up with is negatives.

Good move on the logo switch. Hopefully Metrosports will actually pay attention to the team's request. For highlights of a KC-DC game this year, they pulled out the old Nazi eagle logo.

Well here is Jeff Bradley's take on it
    http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20061129&content_id=79605&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp

And while you might not think there is a good tradition with the name, I do, I think there is a very nice tradition with the name Kansas City Wizards, I have no problems at all with keeping the name the Wizards.

Why should I care what Jeff Bradley thinks, especially when he admits he doesn't really like the name? I can count on one hand the amount of people I know that actually "like" the name. Most say, "I don't mind it" if they favor keeping the name. Great, sounds like a winner.

I don't really trust in his ability to know the strength of the brand here in Kansas City. I think you know the strength of it a lot better, so I'd rather hear your opinion on it.

He's looking at it from a league perspective. Something like, "too many teams are changing their names".

Who cares if other teams are rebranding? I just care about our team being built on the foundation of class it deserves. I don't think our name aids that cause in the slightest.

THe only way I think I would be ok with re-branding is if we re-branded to "Kansas City" (if that's even legally possible) or "Kansas City FC/SC" or something without an autmatic nickname attached. I agree with Mike - I think there is a pretty nice tradition with the Wizards name.

And by simply taking it away and not adding anything else, they would still leave open the opportunity for that nickname to stick. If it doesn't...Oh well.

Just as long as they don't change the colors...

the other day i was either watching espn or reading on espn.com and there was a mention of the washington wizards... only, they used 'wiz' instead of the full name. i don't follow the nba at all, do they get called the wiz often? it looked horrible and i got a good chuckle out of it.
