Is the CL going to be on ESPN2 again this season? There are rumors floating about that it won't be, but was wondering if anyone knew for certain.

1 game per match day, at least for the 1st round.

    Check out ESPN2's schedule.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tvlistings/schedule?date=20030917&network=02

Match day #1: telecast on Wednesday (9/17), no telecast on Tuesday (9/16).

Match day #2: telecast on Tuesday (9/30), no telecast on Wednesday (10/1).

Click on the calender on the right hand side to see the schedule of the relevant dates...

Looks like there will be NO Champions' League coverage in the United States beginning in January 2004. ESPN sucks!

Anybody know how to get ESPN Deportes on Direct TV? I know it becomes available in January. But I think you need Direct TV Para Todos which is pretty expensive.

If you're close to New York City, "Nevada Smiths" pub gets ESPN Deportes.

ESPN Deportes is currently on DirecTV Para Todos, channel 426. Watch the Sunday Nite baseball or Sunday Nite NFL en espanol.

    Except it's only a part-time channel.

    Re: I know you

Tommy Smyth is the colour commentator of UEFA Champions League on TSN Canada, ESPN Latin America/Caribbean, ESPN Australia, ESPN New Zealand, and ESPN Pacific Rim (Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Western Samoa, Tahiti, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Kiribati).

Note that he will be broadcasting the games regardless of whether they will also be aired on ESPN2 in the US.

It is my understanding that ESPN Deportes will be the exclusive non-pay-per-view US TV outlet for UEFA Champions League sooner or later.

Whether ESPN2 will still have telecasts in February-May 2004 is still too early to tell, though I personally do NOT expect ESPN2 to devote valuable time slots for UEFA CL when ESPN2 can make 5 times the money airing infomercials, time buys, poker (the new fad TV sport for 2003, with better ratings than regular season Major League Baseball or NBA) or X-Games reruns.

I agree that in the future ESPN D will the only home for the CL here in the US as long as ESPN holds the rights (which is such a major disappointent for a network that likes to sell itself as caring about soccer but really doesn't). I do think that they will finish the 2003-2004 campaign on ESPN--I would be surprised if they switched over.
As for making more money with those other events, are the people who watch poker and some of the other crap they show home at 2 in the afternoon? I thought that was why they put that on in the evening and overnight. Plus, CL ratings aren't bad for ESPN2.
Finally, when do those rights run out? Hopefully FSW/FSN will buy them up at that point.

In the UK Sky Sports are showing ALL the matches- you can select which match you want to watch on you remote and flick over between the others!

Well, unfortunately the US is not as football-enlightened as the UK.
Plus, we don't have the digital cable abilities you do.

CL ratings on ESPN2 in the US are awful, averaging only 0.15% (150000 households.)

But what is that time slot getting on non-game days? It has to be way less then that. I mean ESPN is really happy with the 600,000 that PTI gets so I would think that on the duce that would make the suits happy.

ESPN2 can get 200000-300000 households when there is no UEFA CL (compared to only 150000 households with UEFA CL).

Furthermore, ESPN2 has 10 minutes of ad inventory to sell per hour on most programming compared to only 2 minutes per hour to sell during UEFA CL broadcasts (the other 2 minutes per hour is reserved for cable/satellite TV operator ad inserts).

Re: Re: Re: I know you

He was simply not aware of the facts at that time.
There had already been a press release that after Jan 1 2004, ESPN2 would not be carrying the CL matches and they would go to ESPN Desportes in the USA.
But the press release may have been in error in that it did not mention the possibility that has been mentioned that ESPN2 may still carry one match per week.
    That is not clear yet.

    UEFA Champions League
    ---------------------

ESPN International holds exclusive TV distribution
rights to the UEFA Champions League in the Americas
(including the US and Canada) and Oceania
through the 2005-2006 season via an agreement
with Swiss sports marketing agency TEAM Marketing AG.

ESPN2 (US) will have US TV coverage for
UEFA Champions League Match Days 1-6, with
one live telecast on either Tuesday (Match Day 2)
    or Wednesday (Match Days 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6) at 2:30pm ET,
in order to satisfy a contractual obligation
to air an average of at least one match per
match day on a non-pay-per-view channel in the US.

Setanta Sport has sublicensed US and Canadian
TV rights to UEFA Champions League group stage matches
    involving Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea,
    Celtic, Rangers, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Olympiakos,
    AEK Athens, and Panathinaikos
from ESPN International and TEAM Marketing AG.
These matches will air on closed-circuit TV
if they are not aired in the US on ESPN2
    or in Canada on TSN/RDS.

The UEFA Champions League is expected to air in the US
on ESPN Deportes once ESPN Deportes
    becomes a full-time service in early 2004,
with doubleheaders on match Tuesdays and Wednesdays
starting with the Round of 16 (in February 2004)
through the Quarterfinals, plus both legs
of both semifinals and the final.

ESPN Deportes will be available via DirecTV Para Todos
    throughout the continental US
and via digital cable in some areas (notably COX Communications).
