    Much like the recent US documentary Restrepo, the highly praised Danish war documentary Armadillo (also from 2010) takes you directly into combat in Afghanistan, as it follows a Danish platoon of young army recruits on a 6-month tour of duty at the British-Danish army base Armadillo, located in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.

    Not surprisingly, Armadillo took the top prize at Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival and sparked hefty debate in Denmark about the nature in which the army is being used in Afghanistan.... and it is a quite unique war documentary, since ther is no voice over or the on-camera interviews that usually "paint the picture" the military or a director with an agenda want you to see...

    In this documentary the camera tells the story and let you see the action through your own eyes, while the soldiers personalities emerge through the conversations they have with one another with a candidness that interviews could never have achieved. It is beautifully shot (it was a test campaign for a new model of HD field cameras) and the way the director employs the music and conversations, almost creates a type of emotion characteristic of a documentary-style fictional film (like Cloverfield), rather than a more conventional war documentary (like Restrepo)... So this is really a must see... and fortunately it is now availabe in HD quality on youtube (English subtitles) :

    Well, not much is going on in this thread, so I'll just add a bit about Scandinavian television crime series, that seem to be doing more than well the past 10 years and finally also has become hot outside Scandinavia.

    I think it started for real, when Unit One (Rejseholdet at IMDb) starring Mads Mikkelsen, won the International Emmy Award for best non-American television drama series in 2002, though it was mainly aired in Scandinavia, Germany (by ZDF) and in Australia (by SBS). But what really happened is, that it sparked an interest abroad for Scandinavian crime series and made especially German ZDF throw money at Denmark's national public-service broadcasting corporation (DR or DR1), when they had immediate plans of making yet another crime series, this time named The Eagle: A Crime Odyssey (Ørnen at IMDb) about an Icelandic boy who has left Iceland to join the police in Denmark. This joint production then also became a success and won the International Emmy Award for best non-American television drama series in 2005. You can btw watch the haunting intro music for the series here :

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsBP833SNWE"]YouTube - Ornen[/ame]

    Despite the awards and success in Europe, the two crime series were not picked up by the English language countries except for SBS in Australia, no doubt because of their usual worry about subtitles, but BBC Four took notice and finally took a chance with the Swedish crime series from 2005 Wallander (Wallander at IMDb) which then also quickly was adapted into an English-language production of the same name (English Wallander at IMDb), starring Kenneth Branagh.

    The English adaption :

    Original Swedish movie trailer :

    While Wallander was a success in England, Denmark's national public-service broadcasting corporation (DR), were already working on their 3rd crime series project in 2007 called The Killing (Forbrydelsen at IMDb), once again with financial help from German ZDF and quickly picked up by SBS1 Australia and finally this year also by BBC Four. Although subtitled, it attracted more viewers on BBC Four than the popular American series Mad Men, and scored audience appreciation figures of 94%, so the rights were quickly picked up by the American cable network AMC that also had produced Mad Men (and The Walking Dead), but now were highly interested in making the American adaption of The Killing (and at IMDb), though as a shorter version and with a different ending (not to give away the killer I suspect). The American adaption is scheduled to premiere on the cable channel AMC tomorrow on April 3 with a two-hour premiere.

    The BBC trailer of the original Danish version :[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IZUWkghFeQ"]YouTube - The Killing 2007 - English Trailer Season One[/ame]

    The brand new Amrican adaption:

    or click here for the trailer at imdb.com

    In all fairness, it should be said that AMC are trying to keep it as close to the original as possible and embrace the unique Scandinavian "touch" or feel, which is the main reason why they picked up the sereis in the first place. So this is almost going to seem like a "dubbed" foreign-language series to the American viewers. It also has a Danish producer (Mikkel Bondesen).

    Did you know ?

    ... that the top of the American billboard is dominated by Scandinavian songwriters at the moment ?..

    The Katy Perry song - 'E.T.' , Ke$ha's 'Blow' and P!nk's 'F**kin' Perfect' are all written by Swedish Max Martin who is also co-writer along with fellow Swede Alexander Kronlund on Britney Spears' 'Till the World Ends' .... Rihanna's 'S&M' hit is written by the Norwegian Stargate production team (Mikkel Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen) and though Lady Gaga is not Danish, her big hit 'Born This Way' is co-written and and co-produced by Danish Jeppe Laursen, better known from the pop duo 'Junior Senior'...
