Try this link instead. This one actually works. http://football.uk.reuters.com/world/news/SP232599.php And since when did we come into (real) contention anyway? (Not that I mind )
Re: Detroit Soccer Thread, Part IV I don't know, but consider MLS' history -- RSL came completely out of left field when they announced it for expansion. So you NEVER KNOW....
Re: Detroit Soccer Thread, Part IV Fingers are being crossed for this one. It'd be a nice surprise if Detroit gets a team, it'd beat driving to Chicago, Columbus, or Toronto to watch MLS.
Sorry about the bad link, but... I'm not sure where this new interest came from. I assume its the bid on the Silverdome. Lets not give up hope yet, support your local soccer and maybe something can come to fruition.
Re: Detroit Soccer Thread, Part IV well, i think the SE Michigan thing would kinda go without saying. You could involve the Ignition (if you could drum up enough indoor fans to do it) -- you could also do what Philly did, and go to the closest MLS game (CBUS) and make some noise in the name of Detroit. Organize viewing parties of games -- hell, even if you wanted to make it a regular thing at a pub where you watch Euro games and (more importantly) MLS and USL games. But that's where finding the "home base" comes into play. Gotta find a good pub for that.
Well, maybe -- lord knows he'll be a little richer after this coming baseball season. (How much money do you get for winning the World Series anyway?....not to mention selling out every home game....additional merchandise...etc. etc. etc.)
And he owns a lot of derelict property in Detroit...and his wife is a Casino owner so she got to be worth a bundle? The reason I mentioned him was that some guy on a NHL forum said that MLSE have had a lot of other NHL owners around lately...Several of them seriously interested about TFC and MLS. And considering the distance between Detroit and Toronto...
It does suck drving to all those places. But flying to DC is not that cheap also. How do we get our own candidate city thread?
Re: Detroit Soccer Thread, Part IV Good point. I don't think Salt Lake City was even somewhat HINTED at before July 2004. Here's to hoping it happens again.... And just so everyone knows, I like where the new thread has started. I may not post that much, but anytime someone looks at this thread, they'll think of me. It shows my support for a future team in the area. But no need to brag
Re: Detroit Soccer Thread, Part IV With regards to gathering places - anyone got anything on what's even around in the area? I haven't looked for an area pub in the past (hell, I only made drinking age under 2 years ago), and every discussion on the subject in the past couple months hasn't garnered many responses (and I can't recall any of them off-hand and it'll be good to have them near the front of the thread for reference )
It takes a thousand posts and a dozen or so posters..apart from being mentioned as a candidate by MLS official sources. Still a long way to go..
Well, a few hundred pages back in the old thread, I had the idea to name the supporters' group The Purple Gang. Now may just be the time. Get a bunch of rowdies, clad in purple (dark purple, think Fiorentina) so as to be noticeable, to go to Bucks and Ignition games, and their official pubs before and after them, to be conspicuous in showing in word and deed that it's a blast to be a soccer fan. The Purple thing would serve to make it distinctive to Detroit without going to the Motor City well for the gazillionth time (see the link if you haven't already), and make it clearer that these are fans of soccer, who would support an MLS team from the outset, as opposed to just one team. If done right, the Purples could be to Detroit almost what Sons of Ben has been to Philadelphia.
Yeah, being named as a potential candidate on a UK-based news agency isn't very credible. What the heck do the Limeys know about soccer anyway...
...and Mr Golden Balls' arrival has done nothing to expand that, unfortunately. They're more likely to show NFL than MLS on any UK based sports channel.
Only the Superbowl is broadcast in the UK, MLS has been shown on channel 5 for at least three years (thats a free to air terrestial channel aswell).
Actually Sky shows a number of NFL games over the weekend. I know that's not free to air, but it makes my point at least semi-valid.
